Book excerpt: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) have gained significant interest and popularity since they have enormous potential in several fields of applications. Infrastructure-free, self-configuring and mobility are the main reasons behind this popularity. As the necessity of the group-oriented applications over MANET increases, Quality of Service (QoS) support is getting attention as one of the critical issues. Multicast communication is the ideal communication technique for supporting these types of applications. However, QoS multicast routing in large-scale networks faces several difficulties and challenges that need to be addressed. These challenges include dynamic MANET topology, multicast packet forwarding and shared wireless medium. Thus, it is necessary to design an efficient multicast routing protocol to support multimedia multicast applications in large networks with large group sizes. In this research, the problem of scalability of multicast routing protocols to support QoS over MANETs is investigated. In particular, a new Scalable QOS Multicast Routing Protocol (SQMRP) has been developed. The main objective of this protocol is to design a lightweight scalable QoS multicast routing scheme irrespective of the number of multicast members and network size. This is achieved by applying the following strategies: First, designing a novel and scalable virtual architecture that takes advantage of the geometric information of the mobile nodes, which provides efficient cluster management to handle dynamic movement of mobile nodes. Second, developing a new location service algorithm which reduces redundant propagation of packets between clusters. Third, proposing a simple and efficient hierarchical structure to manage the multicast members to further enhance the scalability. And finally, setting up a multicast forwarding tree through developing a route discovery algorithm guided by the geographic information which incurs lower overhead. The performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated through developing both an analytical investigation and extensive simulation using the GloMoSim simulator environment. The obtained results are compared with the well-known multicast protocol On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP). It has been found that the proposed virtual construction can scale to large MANETs and effectively reduces the communication overhead for location service and multicast routing discovery. The simulation results showed that, the average PDR of SQMRP is higher by 7.9% and the NPO is reduced by an average of 57.7% compared to ODMRP considering different network sizes. Also, PDR is improved by 8.3% and the NPO is reduced by 55.6% for different multicast group sizes. In fact, it is observed that SQMRP out performs ODMRP protocol in most of the studied metrics and scenarios.

Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

These filters will be used to enable private communication among selected members of the multicast tree. With these filters, a multicast tree can be used to support one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to- many communication concurrently by reusing the paths and resources of the existing multicast tree. We theoretically, and through simulations, study the savings in time and network resources of using the network filter compared with building a new multicast tree for every new communication request. All the three aspects of network communication - mobility routing, QoS routing and network filters - are studied as a whole to develop a multicast-based mobile QoS routing protocol that is efficient, scalable and robust for use by both fixed and mobile devices in an infrastructure-based wireless network.

Book excerpt: The demand to exchange digital information using wireless communication system is growing fast nowadays. When there are independent mobiles users participating in sharing resources or interacting with each other, like wireless video sharing and interactive games, and no centralized connectivity is used, the application can be treated as the application of Mobile Ad Hoc Network. Two multicast routing protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) were proposed. The multicast routing protocol without Quality-of-Service (QoS) support aimed at improving packet delivery ratio. Data delivery tree was built on top of the mesh structure. The mesh structure was updated when there was no data delivery tree to cover all receivers. The branch of the tree was selected based on the link stability prediction. To do so, Packet Delivery Prediction (PDP) was introduced. Models like battery model and route selection model were used at every node in the system to predict the stability of the node/link and make date delivery decision according to the scheme defined. The multicast routing protocol with QoS support aimed at providing Quality of Service to real-time applications. Bandwidth and delay were the two major considerations for the proposed QoS-enabled protocol. The nodes in the system monitored the bandwidth consumption of itself as well as the neighboring nodes. Real-time traffic flow was admitted or rejected at the source based on the bandwidth availability feedback of the intermediate nodes. For admitted real-time traffic flow, the resource was set aside for a specific period of time, which was designed to take into account the mobility and packet inter-arrival delay requirement. Simulation showed the QoS-disabled as well as QoS-enabled multicast routing protocol can achieve their major design goal. The QoS-enabled routing protocol can admit or reject real-time traffic flow according to available bandwidth at the nodes. Real-time traffic was better served using QoS-enabled multi.

Book excerpt: Next-generation Internet providers face high expectations, as contemporary users worldwide expect high-quality multimedia functionality in a landscape of ever-expanding network applications. This volume explores the critical research issue of turning today’s greatly enhanced hardware capacity to good use in designing a scalable multicast protocol for supporting large-scale multimedia services. Linking new hardware to improved performance in the Internet’s next incarnation is a research hot-spot in the computer communications field. The methodical presentation deals with the key questions in turn: from the mechanics of multicast protocols to current state-of-the-art designs, and from methods of theoretical analysis of these protocols to applying them in the ns2 network simulator, known for being hard to extend. The authors’ years of research in the field inform this thorough treatment, which covers details such as applying AOM (application-oriented multicast) protocol to IPTV provision and resolving the practical design issues thrown up in creating scalable AOM multicast service models.

Book excerpt: Supporting scalable and efficient routing and service provision in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) has been a big research challenge. In this dissertation, we propose a scalable and efficient geographic routing and service provision architecture for MANET. The architecture is designed to possess the features of scalability, efficiency, robustness and adaptability. Conventional topology-based schemes are normally hard to scale, instead, we make use of geographic information in the architecture to improve the performance. Due to the close relationship between routing and service provision, we integrate the application-layer service provision and the network-layer routing in one architecture. Such cross-layer design makes different layers to work more closely and efficiently. The architecture is composed of four components. First, an efficient hierarchical structure is built and maintained. The structure is adaptive and flexible. Specifically, the number of layers can be adjusted according to the service and management requirements. Second, a scalable service and membership management scheme is deployed on top of the hierarchical structure to efficiently track the resource and service states. Third, the traffic patterns in a service provision network are various, and we design unicast and multicast routing protocols to support robust service data delivery in the architecture. We develop two self-adaptive on-demand geographic unicast routing protocols for MANET. They can build efficient paths based on the need of user applications and adapt to various scenarios to provide efficient and reliable routing. The local topology is updated in a timely manner according to network dynamics and traffic demand. A route optimization scheme is adopted to adapt the routing path according to both topology change and actual data traffic requirements. Instead of pre-setting parameter values, each node can determine and adjust the protocol parameter values independently according to different network environments, data traffic conditions and node's own requirements. We use the second protocol to support the peer communications in the architecture. Its reactive and adaptive mechanism can meet different routing requirements in service provision networks. We also design two scalable geographic multicast protocols for MANET to implement scalable membership management and robust multicast packet delivery. The first protocol builds a network-range zone-based bi-directional tree for membership management and packet delivery. In the second protocol, a hierarchical structure is constructed based on an on demand zone structure, and both control messages and data packets are forwarded along efficient tree-shape paths without active tree structure built and maintained, which efficiently reduces the maintenance overhead and increases the reliability of the protocol. Both protocols combine location service for group members with membership management to further reduce overhead. We use the second protocol in the architecture to provide scalable and robust routing support for group communications. Finally, with the support of all the above components, the service provision functions are deployed in the architecture. The service delivery including long-term data transfers and short-term control message transmissions is supported by our unicast and multicast routing protocols. By following the hierarchical structure, we design an efficient and scalable service discovery scheme to quickly locate appropriate service providers. Based on the service states aggregated at different layers through the service management and with the assist of the hierarchical structure, efficient service coordination is implemented in service discovery and usage phases to coordinate multiple service providers to provide a service. Furthermore, robust service monitoring can also be applied in the architecture to monitor the resource and service states during service usage.

Book excerpt: The availability of cheaper, faster, and more reliable electronic components has stimulated important advances in computing and communication technologies. Theoretical and algorithmic approaches that address key issues in sensor networks, ad hoc wireless networks, and peer-to-peer networks play a central role in the development of emerging network paradigms. Filling the need for a comprehensive reference on recent developments, Handbook on Theoretical and Algorithmic Aspects of Sensor, Ad Hoc Wireless, and Peer-to-Peer Networks explores two questions: What are the central technical issues in these SAP networks? What are the possible solutions/tools available to address these issues? The editor brings together information from different research disciplines to initiate a comprehensive technical discussion on theoretical and algorithmic approaches to three related fields: sensor networks, ad hoc wireless networks, and peer-to-peer networks. With chapters written by authorities from Motorola, Bell Lab, and Honeywell, the book examines the theoretical and algorithmic aspects of recent developments and highlights future research challenges. The book's coverage includes theoretical and algorithmic methods and tools such as optimization, computational geometry, graph theory, and combinatorics. Although many books have emerged recently in this area, none of them address all three fields in terms of common issues.

Book excerpt: Several emerging applications of the current and next generation Internet, e.g. IP radio, IP TV, and video and audio conferencing, etc., involve one-to-many and many-to-many data communications called multicasting. Many real-time applications over IP, such as IP Telephony and video conferencing, can not operate with the best effort service provided by current IP networks. To support such applications, IP networks need to provide certain quality of service (QoS) assurances. Most of QoS-based multicast routing protocols are based on a "flat" routing model that do not scale well for large size networks. This thesis proposes QHMRP, a novel QoS-aware hierarchical multicast routing protocol. The scalability issue is addressed by organizing the network as a hierarchy of domains using the full-mesh aggregation technique. The concept of domain 'controller' is used for coordinating the creation and maintenance of multicast trees. The protocol uses a novel reverse flooding approach to connect host routers with the tree while satisfying end-to-end QoS constraints. This is a distributed algorithm, which uses only local state information at each router. The worst-case connection time and message overhead are estimated and analysis shows that QHMRP constructs loop-free multicast trees. Simulation results show that the message overhead of QHMRP is much smaller than that of the flat routing protocol using reverse flooding.

Book excerpt: In general, routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) can be classified into topology-based protocols and position-based protocols. While for unicast routing many proposals for both classes exist, the existing approaches to multicast routing basically implement topology-based algorithms and only a few of them make use of the geographic positions of the network nodes. These have in common that the sending node has to precalculate the multicast tree over which the packets are distributed and store it in each packet header. This involves two main issues: (a) These approaches are not very flexible with regard to topological changes which abandons the advantages that position-based routing has against topology-based routing, and (b) they do not scale with the number of receivers, since every one of them has to be named in the packet header. This thesis solves these issues and further advances position-based multicast routing. Position-Based Multicast (PBM) enhances the flexibility of position-based multicast routing by following the forwarding principle of position-based unicast routing. It transfers the choice of the next hops in the tree from the sender to the forwarding nodes. Based on the positions of their neighboring nodes, these are able to determine the most suitable next hop(s) at the moment when the packet is being forwarded. The scalability with respect to the number of receiving nodes in a group is solved by Scalable Position-Based Multicast (SPBM). It includes a membership management fulfilling different tasks at once. First, it administers group memberships in order to provide multicast sources with information on whether nodes are subscribed to a specific group. Second, it implements a location service providing the multicast sources with the positions of the subscribed receiver nodes. And third, it geographically aggregates membership data in order to achieve the desired scalability. The group management features two modes of operation: The pr.
