Book excerpt: Guru Brahmanand was born Vikas Chand Patekar in a small village near Pune, as the only child of a small-time farmer. Compelled to flee after molesting his mentor’s daughter, who financed his education, Vikas found himself at the ashram of Guru Rameshwaranand at Rishikesh, where he mastered the scriptures. His exceptional oratory skills brought him to the forefront and into the notice of Guru Rameshwaranand, who elevated his position and christened him Swamy Brahmanand. Rising up the ranks, he became the youngest head of Nandanvan Ashram at 25 years, after the demise of his Guru. Immediately after accession, he incorporated revolutionary changes in the ashram, including opening the doors of the ashram to women and allowing sex. With rising international popularity and bank balance, Guru Brahmanand was being branded as an addition to the Galaxy of Gods by his devotees. But destiny had something else in store. The young, attractive, admired intellectual found himself deeply attracted to the graceful Savitri, the 18-year-old daughter of a disciple. With intensifying love came the mounting desire to possess her and with it the hatching of an anti-spiritual, devilish plan that twisted the course of his affluent celebrated status and life.

Book excerpt: R. K. Narayan (1906—2001) witnessed nearly a century of change in his native India and captured it in fiction of uncommon warmth and vibrancy. In The Dark Room, Narayan’s portrait of aggrieved domesticity, the docile and obedient Savitri, like many Malgudi women, is torn between submitting to her husband’s humiliations and trying to escape them. Written during British rule, this novel brings colonial India into intimate focus through the narrative gifts of this master of literary realism.

Laurence Austine Waddell (1854 1938) was a British Army officer with an established reputation mainly due to a work on the 'Buddhism' of Tibet, his explorations of the Himalayas, and a biography which included records of the 1903-4 military expedition to Lhasa (Lhasa and its Mysteries). Waddell was also in the limelight due to his acquisition of Tibetan manuscripts which he donated to the British Museum. His overriding interest was in 'Aryan origins'. After learning Sanskrit and Tibetan, and in between military expeditions and gathering intelligence from the borders of Tibet in the Great Game, Waddell researched Lamaïsm. He extended his activities to Archaeology, Philology and Ethnology, and was credited with discoveries in relation to Buddha. His personal ambition was to locate records of ancient civilisation in Tibetan lamaseries. Waddell is little known as an archaeologist and scholar, in contrast with his fame in the Oriental field, due to the controversial nature of his published works dealing with 'Aryan themes'. Waddell studied Sumerian and presented evidence that an Aryan migration fleeing Sargon II carried Sumerian records to India. He interrupted his comparative studies of Sumerian and Indian king-lists to publish a work on Phoenician origins and decipherment of Indus Valley seals, the inscriptions of which he claimed were similar to Sumerian pictogram signs cited from G. A. Barton's plates, which are reproduced in this volume. Waddell's life is reconstructed from primary sources, such as letters from Marc Aurel Stein at the British Museum and Theophilus G Pinches, held in the Special Collections at the University of Glasgow Library. Special attention is paid to the contemporary reception of his theories, with the objective of re-evaluating his contribution; they are contrasted to past and present academic views, in addition to an overview of relevant discoveries in Archaeology.

I was immediately transported and completely captivated. A terrific writer.’ Barbara Erskine ‘A vast canvas of memorable characters across a kaleidoscope of cultures… her epic story feels like an authentic reflection of a world full of sadness, joy and surprise.’ The Observer A spellbinding story of forbidden love. Three continents, three decades, three very disparate lives: Savitri, intuitive and charismatic, grows up among the servants of a pre-war English household in Madras. But the traditional customs of her Brahmin family clash against English upper-class prejudice, threatening her love for the privileged son of the house. Nataraj, raised as the son of an idealistic doctor in rural South India, finds life in London heady, with girls and grass easily available… until he is summoned back home to face raw reality. Saroj, her fire hidden by outward reserve, comes of age in Guyana, South America. When her strict, orthodox Hindu father goes one step too far she finally rebels against him... and even against her gentle, apparently docile Ma. But Ma harbours a deep secret… one that binds these three so disparate lives and hurtles them towards a truth that could destroy their world. Praise for Of Marriageable Age: ‘A big book, big themes, an exotic background and characters that will live with you forever.’ Katie Fforde ‘Beautifully and cleverly written. A wondrous, spellbinding story which grips you from the first to the last page… I can't recall when I last enjoyed a book so much.’ Lesley Pearse ‘From the first page I was hooked with this enchanting book… unputdownable.’ Audrey Howard
