Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saving Fuel in Heating a House The value a householder gets from the fuel he burns depends largely on the character of the heating apparatus, the conditions under which it is installed, and the manner in which the fire is handled. The authors, from experience in firing residence-heating apparatus and from observing the methods employed by many who attend to such apparatus, keenly appreciate the importance of proper firing methods, and have written this paper in the belief that some general remarks on the selection, care, and operation of residence-heating apparatus may prove of value to many who are interested in burning fuel in the most economical manner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from House Heating Fuel Tests Article 1. Nature of Investigations. The amount of fuel burned in the average house heating plant is small compared with that consumed by a power plant, yet the very much larger number of houses and other buildings heated by inde pendent hot air furnaces and boilers make the aggregate of coke and coal burned by them no small item. A conservative estimate places the number of dwellings in Iowa equipped with house heating furnaces and boilers at not less than 100, 000. At an annual average fuel cost of each, which is also a low estimate, the amount paid out each year is 6% million dollars for warming the homes of Iowa that are equipped with such house heating plants. Other millions are spent for heating stores, Office buildings, etc., and for fuel burned in heating stoves. It is not hard to see the saving to the State to be gained by choosing such fuels as will save a few per cent on the above amounts, or by choosing such fuels as will reduce the care of fires and the damage from dirt and smoke to a minimum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waste and Correct Use of Natural Gas in the Home Much has been said by the Bureau of Mines and by others about the criminal waste of natural gas that is taking place in our gas fields. Natural gas, one of the most valuable mineral assets of the country, has been permitted to dissipate in such a manner that the public has derived relatively small value from it. In recent years the public has demanded that efforts be made to minimize this waste. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Combustion Experiments With North Dakota Lignite The Bureau of Mines is conducting an extensive investigation of methods of burning different fuels under power-plant boilers and in house-heating furnaces, with a view to effecting improvement of the methods or equipment, thus decreasing waste and promoting a more efficient utilization of fuel resources. Some of the publications that the bureau has issued on the economical use of coal are Tech nical Paper 80, Hand Firing Soft Coal Under power-plant Boil ers; Technical Paper 97, Saving Fuel in Heating a House; Technical Paper 137, Combustion in the Fuel Bed of hand-fired Furnaces; Technical Paper 139, low-rate Combustion in Fuel Beds of hand-fired Furnaces; Technical Paper 180, Firing Bitu minous Coals in Large house-heating Boilers; Technical Paper 199, Five Ways of Saving Coal in Heating Houses; and Bulletin 135, Combustion of Coal and Design of Furnaces. This paper gives the results of combustion tests of North Dakota lignite burned in two forms - natural lignite as it comes from the mine and the carbonized residue from gas retorts. The tests were made by burning the fuels at various rates in experimental furnaces and by studying the processes of combustion. The information thus obtained was used in determining some of the general principles on which a successful furnace can be developed for use under power plant boilers and for house-heating apparatus. A small furnace of this character was designed and tested with promising results. All the experiments were conducted in the fuel-efficiency laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, at Pittsburgh, Pa.
