Book excerpt: A brother recalls the magnificent life of his sister, the greatest writer of her age A launch party is underway for a hotly anticipated biography, the life story of Elena Franklin. As a young woman, Elena was one of the most promising literary talents of the 1920s, and over the years her legend grew. Her biographer, Martha Farrell, has combed through all the evidence of Elena’s genius and passion, from her early years in New York to her expatriate life in Paris. The result is a monumental work – but among the party’s crowd is the man who knows the book is an empty shell. Only William, Elena’s brother, knew the truth about the famed author. Martha’s flawed biography spurs his memory, and he recalls how the temperamental baby grew into a legend. He knew Elena’s hidden pain, shared their family secrets, and draws his own portrait of the troubled soul that lay behind her artistic gifts.

Book excerpt: A Junior Library Guild Selection “Surreal, brainy, and totally captivating.” —Booklist (starred review) “Provocative and moving.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Hutchinson artfully blends the realistic and the surreal.” —School Library Journal (starred review) From the critically acclaimed author of We Are the Ants and At the Edge of the Universe comes a mind-bending, riveting novel about a teen who was born to a virgin mother and realizes she has the power to heal—but that power comes at a huge cost. Sixteen-year-old Elena Mendoza is the product of a virgin birth. This can be scientifically explained (it’s called parthenogenesis), but what can’t be explained is how Elena is able to heal Freddie, the girl she’s had a crush on for years, from a gunshot wound in a Starbucks parking lot. Or why the boy who shot Freddie, David Combs, disappeared from the same parking lot minutes later after getting sucked up into the clouds. Other things that can’t be explained are the talking girl on the front of a tampon box, or the reasons that David Combs shot Freddie in the first place. As more unbelievable things occur, and Elena continues to perform miracles, the only remaining explanation is the least logical of all—that the world is actually coming to an end, and Elena is possibly the only one who can do something about it.

From the author of the Goodreads Choice Award winner The Spanish Love Deception, the eagerly anticipated follow-up featuring Rosie Graham and Lucas Martín, who are forced to share a New York apartment. Rosie Graham has a problem. A few, actually. She just quit her well paid job to focus on her secret career as a romance writer. She hasn’t told her family and now has terrible writer’s block. Then, the ceiling of her New York apartment literally crumbles on her. Luckily she has her best friend Lina’s spare key while she’s out of town. But Rosie doesn’t know that Lina has already lent her apartment to her cousin Lucas, who Rosie has been stalking—for lack of a better word—on Instagram for the last few months. Lucas seems intent on coming to her rescue like a Spanish knight in shining armor. Only this one strolls around the place in a towel, has a distracting grin, and an irresistible accent. Oh, and he cooks. Lucas offers to let Rosie stay with him, at least until she can find some affordable temporary housing. And then he proposes an outrageous experiment to bring back her literary muse and meet her deadline: He’ll take her on a series of experimental dates meant to jump-start her romantic inspiration. Rosie has nothing to lose. Her silly, online crush is totally under control—but Lucas’s time in New York has an expiration date, and six weeks may not be enough, for either her or her deadline.

Book excerpt: Central to every vampire story is the undead's need for human blood, but equally compelling is the human ingestion of vampire blood, which often creates a bond. This blood connection suggests two primal, natural desires: breastfeeding and communion with God through a blood covenant. This analysis of vampire stories explores the benefits of the bonding experiences of breastfeeding and Christian and vampire narratives, arguing that modern readers and viewers are drawn to this genre because of our innate fascination with the relationship between human and maker.

Elena and Ellie ran into trees. Under branches, not stopping for anything; GASPING for breath. They both resisted looking behind them. They just ran as fast as they could. “This way princesses;” Came a mysterious voice. Both of them ran towards the voice. “Luis!” they both yelled. “Shhh. Follow me,” whispered Luis. He took them away from the troop of army men who were mind -controlled by the devil to kill the princesses. The voices of the army men followed them, calling out “we’re going to get you.” The six of the man chased them through the forest. Elena and Ellie followed Luis through the tree. Behind Ellie and Elena the six men surrounded them. Luis restrained them with his left arm and drew his sword, getting ready to fight, so they were protected. Elena did the same she drew her sword and held it above her head, there was a clash of swards as they fought the army men and beat them off. “Let’s go girls no time to waste.” “We need to go find a place to sleep for the night.’’ Ellie saw a cave. They went into it to see if they could sleep in it. “This seems like a good enough place to sleep,” Elena suggested. “Luis agreed. Next morning Ellie woke up in a panicking reaction. ”Elena wake up! Luis is gone, what are we going to do now!” Ellie Shouted. ”Calm down, everything will be ok. I won’t let anything happen to you ok? He might be somewhere around here we just need to wait for him to come back.” Elena gave Ellie a big hug. Luis appeared. “Good morning girls.’’ He had bunches of fruit in his hands. “This is all I could find for now. Ellie ran towards and gave him a hug. “Wow! I am here now” said Luis. ‘’Never leave us alone like that again ok! I...I...I thought you were gone.” Elena was crying with happiness to see Luis again. Luis gave Ellie a hug to make her feel safe again; he could see how strong Elena was. She didn’t complain about anything. She stood there and felt sorry for her sister. She felt that her sister needed more attention and that she needed to feel safe. Luis’s eye meets Elena’s eyes telling her not to worry and he will make sure that Ellie felt safe and protected. “Sorry Ellie next time I’ll be more careful, I’ll make sure you know where I’m going and I won’t leave you like that again.” “You promise?’’ “I Promise, Ok let’s eat, we need to get going before someone else sees us. The longer we stay the more risk’s we will get”. After breakfast they started their journey it was a fine morning and it was a long day. Ellie started to get really tired. ”Luis...can we please have a brake, I’m so tired.” “Ok Ellie just for a while ok’’ “We must hurry. The army could catch up to us if we don’t hurry up.” Said Elena. They both sat down and Luis was watching out for the army. “We should get moving now” said Luis. “Ok. Let’s go.” They both jumped up and dusted themselves. Luis led them into the forest so their harder to spot. ‘STOMP, STOMP, STOMP’ “they are catching up to us Come on hurry up.” Elena was Worried. “Hey! You lot stop right there.” The man said. “What do we do now? It’s a dead end.” Ellie Yelled. “Don't worry.” Said Elena and hugged her sister. “There's to path ways. Luis takes care of Ellie while I distract the army men.” She gave her sister one last hug. “Be brave Ellie. I’ll find you later and all ways stick with Luis. If I don’t find you two I’ll keep looking for you. Be strong and trust yourself.” “No! Don’t go Elena.” “I have to. It’s for your own good. Find your master with Luis and train good.” “Nooooooo!” “Don't worry about Ellie ,I’ll take good care of her.” “Ok Luis I trust you.” They both ran out to the different paths. “Which one do we follow boss?” “The young one won’t do any good. Book excerpt: An exploration of animal spirituality and the ability of animals to communicate with humans even in the afterlife • 2019 Coalition of Visionary Resources Gold Award and Industry Choice and Peoples Choice Award • Chronicles the author’s profound relationship with her dog, Brio, his ability to read her mind and emotions, and the messages she received from him after his death • Shares the author’s research with animal communicators, psychics, and scientists specializing in animal intelligence such as Rupert Sheldrake • Explores animals’ thoughts and feelings, interspecies communication and telepathy, animal souls and the afterlife, and animal reincarnation • Paper with French flaps Looking for companionship after a near-fatal car crash, Elena Mannes, an award-winning television journalist and producer, decided to get her first dog. But what she found with her dog Brio shook the foundations of her physical and spiritual worlds, sending her on a quest to discover the nature of his spiritual origins and to contemplate and seek out the possibility of interspecies communication--even after death. Soon after bringing her puppy home, Mannes realized that the master-companion relationship would not be possible with Brio, who quickly showed that he had a mind--and a spirit--of his own. A healer Mannes visited immediately focused on Brio, exclaiming that he was an old soul. Mannes’s growing curiosity about the intelligence, emotions, and consciousness of Brio and other dogs led her to contact an animal psychic in California who described, with amazing accuracy, Brio’s favorite walks and the author’s apartment from the dog’s point of view. Motivated by her experience, Mannes produced a filmed segment with Diane Sawyer featuring the same psychic, who described Sawyer’s country house and her dog’s favorite spots in the yard. Mannes’s skeptical journalist background compelled her to investigate further. She delved into the world of animal communicators, psychics, and scientists studying animal intelligence, including Rupert Sheldrake, to find answers to her multiplying questions: Do animals have thoughts and feelings? Consciousness? Souls? Is interspecies communication possible? Can animals reincarnate? Spanning the entire life and afterlife of Brio, including his last days and his messages to the author after he passed on, this book also explores Mannes’ investigations into the spiritual life of animals, offering a new understanding of the unbreakable bond between humans and animals. Mannes invites readers to move beyond the owner-pet relationship and shows us how to see animals as thinking, feeling, spiritual beings whose connections with us extend far beyond life and death.

A richly layered study.” —Kirkus Reviews “I greatly admire the work of Tiziana de Rogatis. She is a reader of deep refinement. Often I think that she knows my books better than I. So, I read her with admiration and remain silent.” —Elena Ferrante, in the magazine, San Lian Sheng Huo Zhou Kan Ferrante’s four-volume novel cycle known in English as the Neapolitan quartet has become a global success, with over ten million readers in close to fifty countries. Her readers recount feeling “addicted” to the novels; they describe a pleasure in reading that is as rare as it is irresistible, a compulsion that leads them either to devour the books or to ration them so as to prolong the pleasure. De Rogatis here addresses that same transnational, diverse, transversal audience. Elena Ferrante’s Key Words is conceived as a lighted path made of luminous key words that synthesize the multiform aspects of Ferrante’s writing and guide us through the labyrinth of her global success. “An exceptional companion to the source material, particularly for the lit-crit crowd looking to affirm Ferrante’s reinvention of the future of the novel.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2016, Disney introduced its first Latina princess, Elena of Avalor. Princesa of the Periphery explores this Disney property using multiple case studies to understand its approach to girlhood and Latinidad. Following the circuit of culture model, author Diana Leon-Boys teases out moments of complex negotiations by Disney, producers, and audiences as they navigate Elena’s circulation. Case studies highlight how a flexible Latinidad is deployed through corporate materials, social media pages, theme park experiences, and the television series to create a princess who is both marginal to Disney’s normative vision of princesshood and central to Disney’s claims of diversification. This multi-layered analysis of Disney’s mediated Latina girlhood interrogates the complex relationship between the U.S.’s largest ethnic minority and a global conglomerate that stands in for the U.S. on the global stage.
