Download or read book Megalies written by Lodovico Balducci and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Make it up, dammit! Just lie! How can you expect to become a physician if you don't learn how to lie?" I used to recommend to junior medical students the first day they walked into a ward. I shared the wisdom accumulated in more than thirty years. I had survived thanks to a carefully woven web of lies. The mother of all lies holds there is an objective good, such as money, power, or prestige. We are expected to pursue it at the cost of denying ourselves, our unique living truth. This book narrates the journey of Lodovico Balducci in his discovery of the living truth: the ability to give and receive unconditional love. "Agape" is purposeful, determined, and committed love inspired by our own mystery, the most intimate needs and inspiration. Agape allowed Balducci to convert his worst liabilities, such as depression, into his most valuable assets when ministering to the suffering. Agape showed Balducci that he was "sacred," that is, endowed with a mission only he can accomplish, that "sacrifice" (the recognition of one's sacredness) is the meaning of existence, and that redemption (the paying of somebody else's debt for the common good) is the goal of personal sacrifice.
Book Synopsis Restore Such a One by : Lance M. Bacon
Download or read book Restore Such a One written by Lance M. Bacon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widespread deficiencies in spiritual formation see an increasing number of ministers buckle under the significant burdens common to the task. There are seasons when a powerful triad of the flesh, the world, and the devil converge (Eph 2:2–3, cf. Jas 3:15 and 1 John 2:16). Misdirected attempts to fulfill emptiness, find worth, or heal longstanding wounds ensue. Widespread instances of sexual immorality result. Sound exegesis and analysis of theological doctrine presents an allowance, in certain cases, for ministerial restoration. However, this necessitates an intimate and intricate approach that differs significantly from the varied solutions churches and denominations offer. Few restoration programs bring a biblical response to bear. Remarkably rare are restoration programs that look to correct causal factors and commit to congregational care. This program orients itself on an understanding of brokenness and the need for holistic (re)formation. The latter requires fallen ministers to progress beyond biblical confession and repentance to partner with the Holy Spirit and key authorities such as an overseer, mentors, Christian mental health professionals, and a designated congregation. The unitive goal is a “sanctifying psychopathology” that properly diagnoses spiritual and emotional health; eradicates the adverse influences of emotional, cultural, and spiritual factors; and redirects self-oriented patterns of thought and behavior.

Book excerpt: Mimi Wallingford, Great Granddaughter of Adelaide Wallingford, has the life that most girls dream about, playing Juliet opposite teen heartthrob Troy Summer on Broadway in Shakespeare's famous play. Unfortunately, she has no desire to be an actress, a fact her mother can't seem to grasp. But when she and Troy are magically thrust into Shakespeare's Verona, they experience the feud between the Capulets and Montagues first hand. Mimi realizes that she and Juliet have more in common than Shakespeare's script-they are both fighting for futures of their own choosing. Mimi feels compelled to help her and with Troy's unexpected help, hopes to give Shakespeare's most famous tragedy a happily-ever-after-ending.
Book Synopsis The Ghosts of Iwo Jima by : Robert S. Burrell
Download or read book The Ghosts of Iwo Jima written by Robert S. Burrell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1945, some 80,000 U.S. Marines attacked the heavily defended fortress that the Japanese had constructed on the tiny Pacific island of Iwo Jima. Leaders of the Army Air Forces said they needed the airfields there to provide fighter escort for their B-29 bombers. At the cost of 28,000 American casualties, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions dutifully conquered this desolate piece of hell with a determination and sacrifice that have become legendary in the annals of war, immortalized in the photograph of six Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. But the Army Air Forces’ fighter operations on Iwo Jima subsequently proved both unproductive and unnecessary. After the fact, a number of other justifications were generated to rationalize this tragically expensive battle. Ultimately, misleading statistics were presented to contend that the number of lives saved by B-29 emergency landings on Iwo Jima outweighed the cost of its capture. In The Ghosts of Iwo Jima, Captain Robert S. Burrell masterfully reconsiders the costs of taking Iwo Jima and its role in the war effort. His thought-provoking analysis also highlights the greater contribution of Iwo Jima’s valiant dead: They inspired a reverence for the Marine Corps that proved critical to its institutional survival and its embodiment of American national spirit. From the 7th War Loan Campaign of 1945 through the flag-raising at Ground Zero in 2001, the immortal image of Iwo Jima has become a symbol of American patriotism itself. Burrell’s searching account of this fabled island conflict will advance our understanding of World War II and its continuing legacy for the twenty-first century. At last, the battle’s ghosts may unveil its ultimate, and most crucial, lessons.

Book Synopsis Saving Human Lives by : Robert E. Allinson
Download or read book Saving Human Lives written by Robert E. Allinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-20 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pioneering work. Recent disasters such as the tsunami disaster continue to demonstrate Professor Allinson’s thesis that valuing human lives is the core of ethical management. His unique comparison of the ideas of the power of Fate and High Technology, his penetrating analysis of the very concept of an "accident", demonstrate how concepts rule our lives. His wide-ranging investigation of court cases and government documents from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries, and from places as diverse as the USA, UK and New Zealand provide ample supporting evidence for the universality and the power of explanation of his thesis. Saving Human Lives will have an impact beyond measurement on the field of management ethics.

With her sterling record of hunting down serial killers, she is a fast-rising star in the BAU, and when a woman is discovered in the middle of a frozen lake, Katie is the natural choice to partner with Canadian law enforcement to track the killer across the brutal and unforgiving landscape. Tensions run high between Katie and her new Canadian partner, and time is running out before the killer’s trail goes cold. Can Katie keep her demons at bay long enough to enter a killer’s mind and stop him before it’s too late? Or will this diabolical monster outwit her in his game of cat and mouse? In REACH ME (Book #2), when a serial killer escapes and crosses the border into Canada, FBI Special Agent Katie Winter must team up with her Canadian counterpart to stop him before others die. But as secrets from her own past bubble up, Katie must also follow a lead for her own sister’s disappearance before it, too, goes cold. Can she stop him in time? Or will he find her first?
