Book excerpt: You're already in a war. It's time to fight. This book will equip you with tools to protect the five fronts of spiritual battle: your relationship with God, your identity, your family and friends, your church, and the world. Win Your War is a practical marriage, parenting, and relationship book that is grounded in the Word of God and focused on recognizing Satan's role in your life. Mark and Grace Driscoll help you understand the power Jesus gives you to overcome the enemy's attacks. Mark and Grace Driscoll look at the nature of spiritual warfare in response to Adam and Eve. God has a kingdom where His people are governed by the Spirit. Satan has the world, where his people are governed by the flesh. Spiritual warfare is the battle between these two realities in everything, including our identity, temptation, gender, marriage, and emotional well-being. Some years ago Mark Driscoll preached on the Book of Genesis and discovered an unexpected theme about spiritual warfare that works itself out in all of human history: the storyline of the Bible is that there is first a wedding and then a war. Satan did not show up until a man and woman were married and had a ministry call on their lives. The first thing he did was attack marriage and separate men and women. After reading this book, you will uncover the five fronts of spiritual battle: your relationship with God, your identity, your family and friends, your church, and the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A missionary-scholar who has been studying and teaching the Gospel of Mark for over forty years, Dr. Mulholland is an insightful expounder of its message, guiding us through this account of Jesus the mighty miracle-worker who is the Messiah of all nations. Informed by the best of academic research, Mulholland's lucid and detailed study will prove eye-opening as well as soul-challenging for its readers. --Dr.Vernon C. Grounds, Chancellor, Denver Seminary During his many years of work as a missionary in Brazil, the Rev. Dewey Mulholland was enabled to strengthen the church there in a most strategic way. In the seminary he helped found in Brasilia, the capital, he made the inductive study of the Bible in Portuguese central for the training of Christian workers. He wanted to teach people how to study the Bible for themselves. No boring sermons and Bible lessons from these graduates! Studying the Bible the way Mulholland taught them, they keep coming up with new, exciting insights into the inspired meanings of the Bible. Learning to comprehend the biblical text for themselves, his students often opened Mulholland's eyes to vital insights into the Marcan meaning. This English version of his Marcan commentary makes this accumulation of insights available to us in the Euro-American world. Seeing the significance that Mark has for people in Latin America helps us to be more enlightened world Christians. --Dr. Daniel P. Fuller, Senior Professor of Hermeneutics, Fuller Theological Seminary The author skillfully combines Mark's emphasis upon Jesus as the Messiah whose Kingdom embraces people of all nations, with his portrayal of the Servant who reigns through suffering. This message is very relevant to the developing nations where many politicians and clergymen use their positions to dominate. I recommend this commentary, for it enlarges our understanding of the Messiah and calls upon us to fulfill the task Jesus has delegated to us. --Edouard Kitoko Nsiku, Ph.D., United Bible Societies, Moputo, Mozambique, Africa

Book excerpt: From the National Book Award-winning and National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author of The Gnostic Gospels comes a dramatic interpretation of Satan and his role on the Christian tradition. "Arresting...brilliant...this book illuminates the angels with which we must wrestle to come to the truth of our bedeviling spritual problems." —The Boston Globe With magisterial learning and the elan of a born storyteller, Pagels turns Satan’s story into an audacious exploration of Christianity’s shadow side, in which the gospel of love gives way to irrational hatreds that continue to haunt Christians and non-Christians alike.

Book excerpt: Noted biblical scholar Elizabeth Struthers Malbon asks a literary question in this landmark volume: how does the Markan narrative characterise Jesus? Through a close narrative analysis, she carefully examines various ways the Gospel discloses its central character. The result is a multi-layered Markan narrative christology, focusing not only on what the narrator and other characters say about Jesus (pro-jected christology), but also on what Jesus says in response to what these others say to and about him (deflected christology), what Jesus says instead about himself and God (refracted christology), what Jesus does (enacted christology), and how what other characters do is related to what Jesus says and does (reflected christology). Holding significant implications for those who wish to use Mark's Gospel to make claims about the historical Jesus, as well as for those who wish to use Mark's Gospel to construct confessions about the church's belief, Malbon's research is a groundbreaking work of scholarship.

Book excerpt: Throughout the ages, Satan has been seen as God's implacable enemy, fiercely determined to keep as many human beings as he can from entering the heavenly kingdom. But according to Henry Ansgar Kelly, this understanding dates only from post-biblical times, when Satan was reconceived as Lucifer, a rebel angel, and as the serpent in the garden of Eden. In the Bible itself, beginning in the book of Job and continuing through the New Testament, Satan is considered to be a member of the heavenly government, charged with monitoring the human race. In effect, he is God's Minister of Justice, bent on exposing sin and vice, especially in virtuous-seeming persons like Job and Jesus. He fills the roles of investigator, tempter (that is, tester), accuser, prosecutor, and punisher, but also obstructer, preventer of vice, and rehabilitator. He is much feared and despised, accused of underhanded and immoral tactics. His removal from office is promised and his eventual punishment hoped for. The later misreading of Satan as radically depraved transformed Christianity into a highly dualistic religion, with an ongoing contest between good and evil. Seeing Satan in his true nature, as a cynical and sinister celestial bureaucrat, will help to remedy this distorted view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This might look like an ordinary commentary on Mark’s Gospel, but it isn’t one. It understands reality as Action, actions, change, diversity, movement, and the dynamic, rather than as Being, beings, the unchanging, the unitary, rest, and the static, and it reads Mark’s Gospel in the light of that distinctive understanding of reality. It is all about action, change, and diversity, and it understands God, Jesus, and ourselves as action, change, and diversity. The initial chapter introduces the action-based understanding of reality as action in changing patterns—an actology, rather than an ontology. Then follows a section-by-section close study of the Gospel. The result is a unique and somewhat unexpected reading of the text and a distinctive theology to match.
