But Lottie was in hospital for weeks after a road accident and has lost her memory. Louella tries to help but the white mist remains. Until Lottie meets a boy with golden-brown eyes who calls her "Sassy" and accuses her of running away. It is after this meeting that the dreams start, dreams of another life, almost another world, and Lottie, sharing them with Baz, begins to believe he knows more than he chooses to tell. But then Merle joins the act and Lottie feels Baz and Merle, both older than she, are in league against her. Then the dreams begin to grow clearer and Lottie realises she must find her past, at no matter what cost.

Book excerpt: A husbands obsession with historic reenactments threatens to tear his small family apart when they purchase an old house that may be haunted. A jealous wife and a young son with second sight complicate matters as the ghost of a young soldier, a survivor of the Battle of Culloden, Scotlands last stand against the English, inhabits their life. His insistence that a bloodied relic in their possession be returned to the soil of Scotland wreaks havoc upon their world. An unexpected brush with death, the exposure of a beloved leader as a fraud, and a view into the reality of history puts things into rightful perspective.

Book excerpt: Cordelia Owens can weave a hopeful dream around anything and is well used to winning the hearts of everyone in Savannah with her whimsy. Even when she receives word that her sweetheart has been lost during a raid on a Yankee vessel, she clings to hope and comes up with many a romantic tale of his eventual homecoming to reassure his mother and sister. But Phineas Dunn finds nothing redemptive in the first horrors of war. Struggling for months to make it home alive, he returns to Savannah injured and cynical, and all too sure that he is not the hero Cordelia seems determined to make him. Matters of black and white don't seem so simple anymore to Phin, and despite her best efforts, Delia's smiles can't erase all the complications in his life. And when Fort Pulaski falls and the future wavers, they both must decide where the dreams of a new America will take them, and if they will go together.

Book excerpt: From a Daughter’s Perspective Once I learned that this book was being dedicated to me, I insisted that I have something to say about the author, my dad. I would like to introduce his work simply by way of experience and by what I feel has contributed to its making. I am an avid dance person and he has always referred to me as his “poetry in motion,” a well-known phrase for dance, but I had never really read much of his poetry until lately. He was not very open with his writings because he thought his children would not be interested. He would often use phrases that seemed to have a poetic flare. That, to me, was just dad’s way. He would sometimes say a line and then stop and take note of your reaction. This was what he termed as a “hang line.” I later saw these lines in his poems with the dot, dot, dot at the ends. I later learned that dad had his own theory about poetry writing and was not easily taken to trends or reading the works of others who would be looked upon as setting the standard. In his own way, he was insistent with some degree or order or structure citing that it makes poetry more readable and understandable. He totally rejected the idea that structure hinders the creative process but saw it as a tool to preserve it. I remember how displeased he was when I used a stanza of verse that he had helped me with to do an “on stage response” during a pageant. The response was marked down because it was too structured. With dad, poetry was not only dance but it was also music as well. He once related to me how the mechanics of music and poetry paralleled. I’ve concluded that his “theory of poetry writing” relates to his current teaching background as a math professor and his former physics teaching background, especially as I remember the way he tutored me when I was pursing my engineering degree. He perceived that poetry has volume and pitch that is controlled by use of stanza, line-length, and other structural devices that need to be worked with just as music. Rhyme gives a sense of rhythm to poetry as beat does to music. This is the “body and soul connection,” he would say. “I don’t like the trend in avoiding rhyme.” With this insistence comes POETRHYME, a work totally dedicated to rhyme in whatever he experienced. In his way of writing poetry, he was always kindred to nature, a partaker of love, a friend of wisdom, a caretaker of gardens and vineyards that always captured his smiles and personification in a most practical and simple style. Book excerpt: In this feminist-inspired fantasy, a rejected wife starts seeing birds everywhere, including the sleek, cobalt-blue parakeet staring back at her in the mirror After being dumped by her husband of twenty-seven years, losing her house, and selling her jewelry at auction, Sassafras “Sassy” Hummel takes the only job she’s qualified for: maid at a luxury hotel. As if her life weren’t surreal enough, a bird poops on her head while she’s cleaning a suite. But Sassy’s sure she’s really gone off the deep end when, instead of her reflection in the mirror, a tiny blue parakeet stares back at her. Now she’s seeing birds everywhere: cranes, crows, hornbills, a quacking, green-headed duck, a quail, and something red and blue that bobs as it flies past. Sassy’s only friend is Racquel, the owner of Plumage, the hotel’s upscale boutique. Racquel isn’t the preening, froufrou, silk-and-sequins-enamored lady she seems to be. Soon Sassy and Racquel are traveling into an uncharted land where Sassy just might find out who she is and what she really wants. Plumage is a wise, witty, and poignant novel about a woman whose life is for the birds . . . until she discovers her wings, and her world takes flight. “Springer has redefined the concept of ‘knight in shining armor.’ With a touch of Alice Hoffmanesque magic, a colorfully painted avian world and a winning heroine, this is pure fun.” —Publishers Weekly “A writer’s writer, an extraordinarily gifted craftsman.” —Jennifer Roberson “Irresistible . . . charming, eccentric . . . thoughtful and significant.” —Kirkus Reviews “Nancy Springer writes like a dream.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s C. G. Jung embarked upon a bold investigation into childhood dreams as remembered by adults to better understand their significance to the lives of the dreamers. Jung presented his findings in a four-year seminar series at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Children's Dreams marks their first publication in English, and fills a critical gap in Jung's collected works. Here we witness Jung the clinician more vividly than ever before--and he is witty, impatient, sometimes authoritarian, always wise and intellectually daring, but also a teacher who, though brilliant, could be vulnerable, uncertain, and humbled by life's great mysteries. These seminars represent the most penetrating account of Jung's insights into children's dreams and the psychology of childhood. At the same time they offer the best example of group supervision by Jung, presenting his most detailed and thorough exposition of Jungian dream analysis and providing a picture of how he taught others to interpret dreams. Presented here in an inspired English translation commissioned by the Philemon Foundation, these seminars reveal Jung as an impassioned educator in dialogue with his students and developing the practice of analytical psychology. An invaluable document of perhaps the most important psychologist of the twentieth century at work, this splendid volume is the fullest representation of Jung's views on the interpretation of children's dreams, and signals a new wave in the publication of Jung's collected works as well as a renaissance in contemporary Jung studies.

LC Beadle is on a quest for information from an informant who warns him of secrets and danger whilst wondering what he’s doing in Tennessee. As the multidimensional story unfolds, many characters chance upon mystery or warnings of danger whilst asleep. Emma Rafferty and Tatiyana Baglio are concerned that Sonny Trego is out of his depth; much pessimism surrounds an early conversation between the pianist and the gypsy. Meanwhile, Sonny is busily running hither and yon chasing leads for stories to advance his career while his relationship with Bonnie Heckert becomes more serious. However, unbeknownst to either of them, fate has intentions to play a cruel trick. In the meantime, at WT Ranch near Wagon Wheel Gap in Colorado, CJ Beadle is pregnant and having dream encounters with a curious spider monkey named Abner. There seems to be no way for her to escape his unwanted advances, inquisitive nature, or his unflinching and relentless warning: Danger, danger, danger for LC.

On his eighteenth birthday, he realizes that his abusive stepmother is actually a wicked witch and he's suddenly thrust into an eerie world made of his own forgotten memories. With his favorite childhood toys seemingly coming to life in order to help him defeat his enemy, the young hero sets out to journey through the innocence of his youth. With a little help from his long-lost friends, Mizu the mermaid doll and Theodore the teddy bear, he just may grow up a little along the way. A tale about healing and forgiveness, Dream is as surreal as it is sentimental.

Book excerpt: An “invaluable” memoir by a counselor who left the elite private-school world to help poor and working-class kids get into college (Washington Monthly). Winner of the Studs and Ida Terkel Award Joshua Steckel left an elite Manhattan school to serve as the first-ever college guidance counselor at a Brooklyn public high school—and has helped hundreds of disadvantaged kids gain acceptance. But getting in is only one part of the drama. This riveting work of narrative nonfiction follows the lives of ten of Josh’s students as they navigate the vast, obstacle-ridden landscape of college in America, where students for whom the stakes of education are highest find unequal access and inadequate support. Among the students we meet are Mike, who writes his essays from a homeless shelter and is torn between his longing to get away to an idyllic campus and his fear of leaving his family in desperate circumstances; Santiago, a talented, motivated, and undocumented student, who battles bureaucracy and low expectations as he seeks a life outside the low-wage world of manual labor; and Ashley, who pursues her ambition to become a doctor with almost superhuman drive—but then forges a path that challenges received wisdom about the value of an elite liberal arts education. At a time when the idea of “college for all” is hotly debated, this book uncovers, in heartrending detail, the ways the American education system fails in its promise as a ladder to opportunity—yet provides hope in its portrayal of the intelligence, resilience, and everyday heroics of young people whose potential is too often ignored. “A profound examination of the obstacles faced by low-income students . . . and the kinds of reforms needed to make higher education and the upward mobility it promises more accessible.” —Booklist
