Download or read book Wilde's Women written by Eleanor Fitzsimons and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A lively debut biography of the flamboyant Irish writer . . . focusing on the women who loved and supported him” (Kirkus Reviews). In this essential work, Eleanor Fitzsimons reframes Oscar Wilde’s story and his legacy through the women in his life, including such scintillating figures as Florence Balcombe; actress Lillie Langtry; and his tragic and witty niece, Dolly, who, like Wilde, loved fast cars, cocaine, and foreign women. Fresh, revealing, and entertaining, full of fascinating detail and anecdotes, Wilde’s Women relates the untold story of how a beloved writer and libertine played a vitally sympathetic role on behalf of many women, and how they supported him in the midst of a Victorian society in the process of changing forever. “Fitzsimons reminds us of the many writers, actresses, political activists, professional beauties and aristocratic ladies who helped shape the life and legend of the era’s greatest wit, esthete and sexual martyr . . . provide[s] a potted biography of the multitalented writer and gay icon . . . highly enjoyable.” —The Washington Post “Fitzsimons brilliantly calls attention to the progressive ideas and beliefs which drew the most daring and interesting women of the time to his side. The depth and painstaking care of Fitzsimons’ research is a fitting tribute to Wilde’s fascinating life and exquisite writing—and really, what better compliment is there than that?” —High Voltage

Book Synopsis Sarah Bernhardt, Her Artistic Life by : A. Gallus
Download or read book Sarah Bernhardt, Her Artistic Life written by A. Gallus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sarah Bernhardt, Her Artistic Life You ask me, Monsieur, for a short preface to a book which you are publishing. It will not be very easy to content you. If you have spoken kindly of me, my compliance with your request may lead some people to suppose that you were prompted by a wish to please me when you wrote your book. And, on the other hand, if you have been ill-natured, your action may appear perfidious. You ask me to supply you with some information about myself and my childhood. Innumerable stories have been printed about both, and most are false. In my memoirs, which I mean to publish two years hence, I shall correct these untruths. But as your book is to be issued in America, you may express my feelings with regard to this amazing and most admirable nation. I am making my fourth tour in America. The extraordinary progress of this public has astounded me. When I came here first, some sixteen years ago, I made my debut as Adrienne. At the end of a few minutes I was disconcerted and alarmed by a strange noise. Five minutes later the same noise disturbed me. It sounded like the dull and muffled hissing of a multitude. I heard the sound a third time, and at last I understood what had been troubling me. The ladies in the house had all come armed with copies of the play, and as they turned the leaves they made the rustling sound which seemed so terrible. On the occasion of my second visit to this country, some ten years ago, about half the women in my audiences managed to dispense with books. When for the third time I appeared here, at most ten or fifteen of them had brought copies of the play with them; and this year not one woman - not a single one - had any need of books. This seems to me no less remarkable than admirable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
