Book Synopsis Handbook of Religion and the Authority of Science by : Jim R. Lewis
Download or read book Handbook of Religion and the Authority of Science written by Jim R. Lewis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-11-19 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a significant but little-noticed aspect of the interface between science and religion, namely the widespread tendency of religions to appeal to science in support of their truth claims. Though the appeal to science is most evident in more recent religions like Christian Science and Scientology, no major faith tradition is exempt from this pattern. Members of almost every religion desire to see their ‘truths’ supported by the authority of science – especially in the midst of the present historical period, when all of the comforting old certainties seem problematic and threatened. The present collection examines this pattern in a wide variety of different religions and spiritual movements, and demonstrates the many different ways in which religions appeal to the authority of science. The result is a wide-ranging and uniquely compelling study of how religions adapt their message to one of the major challenges presented by the contemporary world.
Download or read book Misreading Judas written by Robert Wahler and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book received The New Pinnacle Award The Gospel of Judas is the most important discovery in history. It bridges the gap between Eastern mystic teaching, Gnosticism, and the three Middle Eastern Abrahamic religions, informing all of them. Unfortunately, the Christianity-biased scholars assigned to its interpretation and those who have followed them do not understand it -- at all. They miss that Judas is the gnostic sacrifice, and that there is no traditional orthodox Jesus sacrificed - in the Gospel of Judas or in the Bible. Therefore, they miss the most important revelation of all time: that 'Jesus' didn't die to save anyone, and that he was in truth preceded and succeeded by other Masters of equal stature. Here from gnostic texts that only just recently arose from the desert sands of Egypt, phoenix-like, is the detailed story of how the New Testament canonical 'Betrayal of Jesus' became the inversion of the gnostic mastership installation story of James the Just, first-century savior. The true origin of the Christian message and its nullification of mystic Truth can now, at long last, be fully told. Connecting verses from the Gnostic Apocalypse of James to the New Testament narrative showing that Judas was James in the Canonical Inversions: First Apocalypse of James "I have given you a sign" (NHC 24:10) "gave them a sign" [the "kiss"] (Matt. 26:48). "Cup of bitterness to the sons of light" (25:15) "let this cup pass from me" (Matt. 26:39). "This is the second Master" (30:25) "Those who seek enter through you" (Second Apoc. 55:1) "I know whom I have chosen." (John 13:18). "Then the disciples dispersed, but James remained in prayer" (30:25) "he withdrew and prayed" (Luke 22:41). "I am he who was within me" (31:15) "I know whom I have chosen" and "I am he" (John 13:18-19). "You have embraced and kissed me" (32:5) "He said 'Hail Master!' and kissed him" (Matt. 26:49). "You are aware and stopped this prayer" (32:5) "Sit here while I pray" (Matt. 26:36). "The flesh is weak" (32:20) "the flesh is weak" (Matt. 26:41). "It will receive what has been ordained for it" (32:20) "thy will be done" (Matt. 26:42). "A multitude will arm themselves against you" (33:5) "band of soldiers with weapons" (John 18:3, Mark 14:43). Book Synopsis New Religious Movements in Modern Asian History by : David W. Kim
Download or read book New Religious Movements in Modern Asian History written by David W. Kim and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides evidence that the emergence of Asian new religious movements (NRMs) was predominantly the result of anti-colonial ideology from local religious groups or individuals. The contributors argue that when traditional religions were powerless to maintain their cultural heritage, the leadership of NRMs adduced alternative principles, and the new teachings of each NRM attracted the local people enough for them to change their beliefs. The contributors argue that, as a whole, the Asian new religious movements overall were very ardent and progressive in transmitting their new ideologies. The varied viewpoints in this volume attest to the consistent development of Asian NRMs from domestic and international dimensions by replacing old, traditional religions.

Book Synopsis Introduction to New and Alternative Religions in America by : William M. Ashcraft
Download or read book Introduction to New and Alternative Religions in America written by William M. Ashcraft and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 1500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most new or alternative religious are gravely misunderstood by members of the religious mainstream. Labeled cults or sects, groups and their members are often ridiculed or otherwise disregarded as weird and potentially dangerous by the populace at large. Despite their efforts at educating the general public, the various anti- and counter-cult activists have in fact promoted much more mis-understanding than accurate understanding of the religious lives of some of their fellow citizens. Consequently, they have helped to create a very hostile environment for anyone whose religious practices do not fit within a so-called mainstream. This set rectifies the situation by presenting accurate, comprehensive, authoritative and accessible accounts of various new and alternative religious movements that have been and are active in American society, and it addresses ways of understanding new and alternative religions within a broader context. Determining what actually constitutes a new or alternative religion is a subject of constant debate. Questions arise as to a new faith's legitimacy, beliefs, methods of conversion, and other facets of a religious movement's viability and place in a given culture. How a religion gains recognition by the mainstream, which often labels such new movements as cults, is fraught with difficulty, tension, and fear. Here, experts delineate the boundaries and examine the various groups, beliefs, movements, and other issues related to new faiths and alternative beliefs. Readers will come away with a fuller understanding of the religious landscape in America today. Volume 1: History and Controversies discusses the foundations of new and alternative religions in the United States and addresses the controversies that surround them. This volume helps readers better understand what makes a new or alternative belief system a religion and the issues involved. Volume 2: Jewish and Christian Traditions explores the various new religions that have grown out of these two Abrahamic faiths. Groups such as the Shakers, the People's Temple, the Branch Davidians, Jehovah's Witnesses and others are examined. Volume 3: Metaphysical, New Age, and Neopagan Movements looks at Shamanism, Spiritualism, Wicca, and Paganism, among other movements, as they have developed and grown in the U.S. These faiths have found new and devoted followers yet are often misunderstood. Volume 4: Asian Traditions focuses on those new and alternative religions that have been inspired by Asian religious traditions. From Baha'i to Soka Gakkai, from Adidam to the Vedanta Society, contributors look at a full range of groups practicing and worshiping in the U.S. today. Volume 5: African Diaspora Traditions and Other American Innovations examines the various traditions linked to the African diaspora such as Rastafarianism, Santeria, and the Nation of Islam, alongside traditions that are truly American incarnations like Scientology, UFO religions, and Heaven's Gate. Some of the new and alternative religions covered in these pages include: ; Shamanism ; Wicca ; Black Israelites ; Santeria ; Scientology ; Elan Vital ; Hare Krishna ; Soka Gakkai ; and many more

Book Synopsis A certain kind of selfishness by : Sunil Sachwani
Download or read book A certain kind of selfishness written by Sunil Sachwani and published by BlueRose Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in modern times can be hectic. The world has become smaller and people more interconnected because of technology. So the pace of life is faster and more intense. There are likewise more of us sharing the planet's resources, making the atmosphere around us more competitive. Most people have their attention fixed on working hard to stay afloat in this fast-paced, stressful environment. Thus, living in today's world poses a challenge as the pressures of daily life make coping with our spiritual duties a daily struggle. There are so many things to do, so many distractions, so many options to every facet of life. For many, it seems that everything on the schedule is far more important than meditation, as though there is all the time in the world to make up for the shortfall in meditation. Our jobs, household duties, family responsibilities, television shows, video games, and hobbies take up so much of our time. We always try to give that time to the Fa. ther which is of no use to us at all. When we are rejected by society, by our children, by our friends, then we want to devote our time to the Father. But we have to give the best time of our life to the Father. Mostly our time is spent in growing up. Then we start getting education and training, and then we give ourselves to family life and the senses and pleasures of the world. And then we become old and everybody rejects us. Our senses don't go along with us. Even our eyes refuse to cooperate, our ears refuse to cooperate, our limbs refuse to cooperate with us. Then we want to worship the Father. We lose the best opportunity, and the time which is of no use to anybody is what we want to devote to the Father. Then we want to be a lover of the Father. The main purpose of this human birth is to go back to the Father, so that should always be kept in view. Keeping that view, other things should fall in line. Maharaj Charan Singh, Spiritual Perspectives, Vol. II Will meditation ever be the primary item on our agenda when even on our rest days there is always one thing or another vying for our time? How do we develop the strength and discipline to make meditation our first priority? We should definitely fulfil our worldly duties but Master must come first, and our commitment to meditate must never be compromised
Book Synopsis Demystifying Brahminism and Re-Inventing Hinduism by : Satya Shri
Download or read book Demystifying Brahminism and Re-Inventing Hinduism written by Satya Shri and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Religion is a tool in the hands of the oppressor against the oppressed solely because he frames the commandments and calls them the God’s’, is an apt description of the Hindu social order. The book rips open the raw nerve of Hinduism—its invidious castes, positioned as a ‘God-ordained’ institution, commandeered by its freebooter priestly class while clandestinely establishing its religious, social and political hegemony through interpolation of its pristine and effulgent scriptures. The author boldly analyses this imbroglio through a microscopic analysis of these and more related issues: • How priests controlled the Hindu religious, social, educational and political apparatus? • How the dominant priestly class fractured the society into mutually antagonistic subordinated hierarchical segments, and ruled it by reserving all elite jobs for itself? • How the fiendish priesthood emasculated shudras by depriving them of the ‘shaastra and shastra’ (education and arms) and made them permanent ‘village servant classes’? • How the pretensions of attaining siddhis through 'meditation and penances' established priests as the ‘gods on earth’ for their assertions of ‘purity and effulgence’? • How ‘karma’, ‘reincarnation’ and ‘84-lakhs births’ theories were devised to justify fatalism and hierarchical gradation of varnas? • Can India be rightfully called the ‘vishvaguru’ and the mother of all civilisations? • How Buddhism effeminated Hindus and made them the doormats for the ruthless? • Why Hindus had to abandon their own, to adop foreign institutions of governance? • Why Hinduism should become a universal and proselytising faith and fight demographic challenges posed by Islam and Christianity?
