Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An erudite work on tectonic resurgence in Late Quaternary time of the Indian subcontinent embracing India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, Neotectonism in the Indian Subcontinent dwells on the causes and consequences of tectonic events that fashioned the landscape of a land characterized by a fragmented framework. The narratives on the structural and geomorphic developments during the morphogenic phase of the geodynamic history of the Indian subcontinent explain many phenomena. These include the tremendous height and spectacular structural-geomorphic architecture of the Himalaya, and the behaviour of wayward rivers in the sinking and rising Indo-Gangetic Plains. In addition are the shifting, deflection, piracy, and even disappearance of rivers and streams in the dry desertic terrane of western India, as well as the unique drainage pattern of the ruptured and rifted plateaus and coastal belts of Peninsular India. The formation of huge lakes due to river ponding in the stable continental shield in Karnataka is also explained. All of these phenomena are accompanied by profuse illustrations. Neotectonism in the Indian Subcontinent portrays the evolution of the extraordinary landforms and landscapes of the subcontinent, constituted by multiple terranes of contrasted lithostructural architecture and distinctive geomorphic layout—each with an altogether different geological history. It chronicles events of crustal unrest or tectonic turmoil manifested as displacement, subsidence, and uplift of the ground with bizarre drainage changes and episodic seismicity. This book caters to planners, engineers, and hazard managers, but also satisfies the curiosity of those who are interested in understanding the formation of the Indian subcontinent. - Identifies areas and belts recurrently ravaged by geological hazards resulting from neotectonic activities - Provides a wealth of information on neotectonic movements and consequent modification of landscape, drainage aberrations, and ground vulnerability, including references that also provide additional resources for those who seek to pursue comprehensive investigations - Includes much new observation and refreshing interpretation to explain many of the striking landforms of the region

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of medieval Indian historiography, an eight-volume magnum opus, History of India as Told by Its Own Historians, by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers, John Dowson (1820-81), was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later, and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However, an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar, S.H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson’s volumes and worked through all the new material, selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala’s annotated Studies, was published in 1939, while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years, while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints, and is even available online now, Hodivala’s volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work, Hobson-Jobson (London, 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both, Elliot and Dowson’s, and for Yule and Burnell’s excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Book excerpt: If all you know about Seattle is the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, or that it rains a lot, or that "Grey's Anatomy" takes place here, then 100 Things to Do in Seattle Before You Die (Reedy Press) is going to open up a whole new city to you. Foodies can binge on savory seafood at The Walrus and the Carpenter, swank fare at Canlis, burgers at Dick's and a cornucopia of organic, sustainable delights at the neighborhood farmer's market. Outdoor adventurers can take on Mount Rainier, or closer to home, trek out to the lighthouse at West Point or sail out on the Sound. Sports fans will find lots of green and blue adoration of all things Seahawks and Mariners, but they can also embrace their inner kid and play flag football and kickball as part of the Underdog Sports League. Music lovers can find bands to listen to every night, for cheap and without the hassle of ticket haggling -- and they can also pay homage to Jimi Hendrix in his hometown. Others can take in the big top antics of Teatro ZinZanni, burlesque beyond boudoir aspirations and the raucous energy of Rollergirls. And if your inclination is to go indoors when it's gloomy outside, you're not alone, and luckily there's plenty of options, such as the Seattle Art Museum, MOHAI, the Wing Luke, Archie McPhee and the REI flagship. Whether you're visiting or here to stay, there's more than 100 things to do here - but hopefully, this is just the start to that journey of discovery.
