Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary in October 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared his vision for an Open-Defecation-Free India. This book talks about the journey of an IAS officer who understood and leveraged the potential of the government, community and citizens through cleanliness. The true meaning of Swachh Bharat was seen as village after village transformed into a cleaner hub. Citizens took ownership to keep their village Open Defecation Free (ODF) through activities such as 'Triggering' and 'Gandhigiri'. The struggles and triumphs in fulfilling the dream of ODF Gujarat are passionately narrated here. The book relates the tale of a renewed satyagraha through Swachhagraha. As we see a mother leading her toddler to squat on the toilet, we are sure the 'luxury' of toilet will become a 'necessity'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into a peasant, polygamous family of nineteen, Lindani excelled academically, rising to become a Doctor of Engineering. His marriage to Nicole, a veterinary doctor, ended prematurely due to his work-driven, competitive, and narcissistic nature. As a politically connected academic, Lindani amassed wealth and fame, often at the cost of meaningful human relationships. His world crumbled when a regime change led to his imprisonment at the age of fifty for culpable homicide and obstructing justice. Nicole fought relentlessly for his release. In prison, Lindani joined ‘Compassionate Friends,’ a group of 30 volunteers aiding a PhD student researching the relationship between human consciousness and global suffering. Among these volunteers, seven were falsely imprisoned by the previous regime to suppress dissent. Through his interactions with these individuals, Lindani’s win-or-lose outlook on life and his consciousness were profoundly transformed. Along with his fellow members, he awakened to the dormant universal intelligence within. Within the confines of prison, they discovered their life’s purpose, leading to unexpected joy, happiness, and fulfilment.

In both books Virgil is concerned with aesthetics, epistemology, and language. There are overlaps, but there appears to be no indication as to which version antedated the other. Both books depict a man vitally engaged in living a philosophical life and reflecting on traditional philosophical questions.

Book excerpt: Explores how the institutional management of children’s sexualities in boarding schools affected children’s future social, political, and economic opportunities Tracing the US’s investment in disciplining minoritarian sexualities since the late nineteenth century, Mary Zaborskis focuses on a ubiquitous but understudied figure: the queer child. Queer Childhoods examines the lived and literary experiences of children who attended reform schools, schools for the blind, African American industrial schools, and Native American boarding schools. In mapping the institutional terrain of queer childhoods in educational settings of the late nineteenth- and twentieth-century, the book offers an original archive of children’s sexual and embodied experiences. Zaborskis argues that these boarding schools—designed to segregate racialized, criminalized, and disabled children from mainstream culture—produced new forms of childhood. These childhoods have secured American futures in which institutionalized children (and the adults they become) have not been considered full-fledged citizens or participants. By locating this queerness in state archives and institutions, Queer Childhoods exposes a queer social history entangled with genocide, eugenics, and racialized violence.

Book excerpt: Except in schoolboy jokes, the subject of human waste is rarely aired. We talk aboutwater-related diseases when most are sanitation-related - in short, we don‘t mention the shit. A century and a half ago, a long, hot summer reduced the Thames flowing past the UK Houses of Parliament to aGreat Stink thereby inducing MPs to legislate sanitary reform. Today, another sanitary reformation is needed, one that manages to spread cheaper and simpler systems to people everywhere. In the byways of the developing world, much is quietly happening on the excretory frontier. In 2008, the International Year of Sanitation, the authors bring this awkward subject to a wider audience than the world of international filth usually commands. They seek the elimination of theGreat Distaste so that people without political clout or economic muscle can claim their right to a dignified and hygienic place togo. Published with UNICEF
