Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitation in War The definition suggests the advisability of seeking refuge in safe seclusion, and - ou being haled into the embarrassing prominence of the platform - I hasten to forestall detection by forth with confessing to a colossal ignorance of the science of hygiene. As regards the art of sanita tion, however, the medical officer is - necessarily less ignorant, and it is upon this factor in the important duty of maintaining the health of the army in the field that I would therefore concentrate attention. Sanitation, as I think you will agree, is not the subject that one would select with the object of being interesting, and the unpromising nature of the subject is enhanced by the difficulty caused by the fact that so many degrees of knowledge are represented in the audience. It is no easy matter to avoid, on the one hand, boring the Officer who has had considerable experience of camp life or. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Sanitation and Other Papers During the period of our Civil War the world was appalled at the hideous loss of life. During the four years of war the Federal army lost by those directly killed in battle, men. It is probable that the loss on the Southern side was equal to this and possibly greater, but if this were true, even if this enormous number had to be doubled, it would still be less than the number of children under two years of age who are reported to have died in the four years between 1903 and 1907, for during that period there were reported the deaths of children under two years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Hygiene and Sanitation This short treatise on Military Hygiene and Sanitation is founded on the lectures delivered by me while Professor of Hygiene at the Royal Army Medical College. I have not attempted to deal in detail with all the problems of hygiene, and in particular I have omitted - as, for instance, in the question of house drainage - those which are liberally treated in the ordinary textbooks. In considering the prevention of infectious diseases, also, I have limited myself to those which are most important in war. I have not therefore discussed such ailments as Malta fever and Tuberculosis, for instance, with, which the army is concerned mainly in peace-time, under conditions not differing materially from those which confront the Medical Officer of Health in civil practice. I have to acknowledge much kind assistance from Captain N. Dunbar Walker, Royal Army Medical Corps, who has helped me greatly with suggestions and in the preparation of some of the plates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Military Hygiene and Sanitation In the discussion of Alcohol and other Narcotics, the aim has been to enable pupils to form an intelligent opinion upon the whole subject and especially to distinguish between mere assertion and scientific evidence. While certain of the data in this chapter cannot be accepted as wholly proved, they yet represent the views of the ablest investigators everywhere. With a clear comprehension of the matter, each one may then determine for himself what his personal relations with these substances shall be. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. While these facts were deplorable, they were the results of extraneous circumstances and would be remedied as soon as conditions returned to normal. But experience has shown that se-called normal conditions are never attained until such a community has been visited by costly fires and epidemics. In fact, normal conditions are not established until the field has been proved a success or a failure which often takes months or even years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Military Sanitation and Management of the Sanitary Service It is quite evident to you, as common sense teaches, that it is desirable to have men accepted in the Army who are the best physical specimens, and also men somewhat intelligent and mentally alert. In a small army when men desire to enlist in great numbers this selection can be made; but there are so many men who have slight imperfections that this degree of perfection will never be reached when a great number of men are called out for active ser vice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Sanitation This book has arisen out of a series of Lectures by Major R. St. J. Macdonald, M. D., Sanitary Officer, Canadian Army Medical Corps, attached to the Third Canadian Division. The Lectures were given at the Divisional Sanitary School to officers, non-commissioned officers, and men engaged in sanitary work. The school was held in the Field as a matter of routine, and the various appliances, described and depicted, were on exhibit for purposes of illustration. The Lectures are printed as they were spoken. They are the outcome of Major Macdonald's three years' service on the Western Front from Ypres to the Somme. They retain the flavour of the Field, and are reproduced in all the simplicity of the crude, but efficient, surroundings in which the School was held. In the absence of books no literary references were possible, even if these had been desirable. With the illustrations, which were drawn by Corporal Sefton of the Sanitary Service, these Lectures give a faithful account of the measures which are in daily use - and with so great success - for the prevention of disease in the Army. It is the intention that all medical officers shall be supplied with this book for their information and guidance in the discharge of their important duties. It may also be read with profit by officers in other Arms of the Service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitation for Medical Officers This work was created to supply in a compact form that can be conveniently carried in the pocket of a uniform, such data as may be useful to medical officers as a guide for sanitary work. As far as possible the information has been made official by the inclusion of the sanitary orders and circulars bearing on the topics discussed. All notes have been made as brief and concise as possible. An endeavor has been made in writing the section on transmissible diseases to present the most recent knowledge concerning the etiology and transmission of the disease in question, together with all information necessary upon which to base a sanitary campaign for its control. It is needless to state that no originality is claimed for the material presented, which is in the nature of a compilation derived from many sources. Special acknowledgment should be made to Havard's Military Hygiene, Melville's Military Hygiene and Sanitation, and Lelean's Sanitation in War as works from which I have borrowed largely.
