Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tropical Hygiene: For Residents in Tropical and Sub-Tropical Climates Owing to the very favourable reception which has been accorded to this book, and to the fact that the Indian Council of the St. John Ambulance Association have distributed a considerable number of copies to oflicers of the Territorial units now serving in India, the second edition has been exhausted in less than a year. The present edition has been carefully revised, enlarged, and brought up-to-date. Amongst the various additions, we may mention a full description of Hookworm Disease and its Prevention, a dissertation on Goats' Milk and Malta Fever as well as two entirely new Chapters, one dealing with the Sanitation of Camps and the other with Hydrophobia in the Tropics. The authors sincerely hope that, like its predecessors, this edition may be found useful not only to students of Elementary Hygiene but to junior practi tioners and students of Medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Hygiene as Applied to Tropical and Sub-Tropical Climates Two reasons have induced me to publish my lectures on Hygiene and Public Health in an extended form. One is that I have been frequently asked to do so, and the other is that a greater interest in hygiene and sanitation is being manifested in the Tropics, than ever was the case before. There is the same spirit abroad in tropical regions in relation to sanitary matters as existed in the early Victorian era in England, and it is likely that a book of this kind will be useful to medical men and officials interested in guiding and controlling the move ment. There are many branches of the subject omitted or dealt with inadequately, but it was thought best to avoid delay, and not at present to issue a bulky volume. The hygiene of the Tropics and of warm climates is the same in principle as the hygiene of colder climates, but the differences of temperature, food, mode of life, environment, and civilization to be found in the Tropics modify to a considerable extent the conditions under which those principles have to be applied; consequently the practice of hygiene in the Tropics differs in many respects from that pursued in colder climates, and that which is suitable to the latter is not always suitable to the former. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aids to Tropical Hygiene Since the last edition of this book was published, the Allied Armies have campaigned in many tropical theatres of war, and a great deal of work has been done by various investigators in all parts of the tropical world. The result has been an immense increase to our store of knowledge, which has necessitated not merely the revision, but the rewriting, of the greater part of the volume. I have been fortunate in having the valued and learned assistance of two of my brother officers, with wide and varied tropical experience - via, lieut.-colonel J. T. Johnson, an Assistant Director of Hygiene, and lieut.-colonel J. Mackenzie, an Assistant Director of Pathology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 1 of 3 Owing to the recent advances in the knowledge of the etiology of many tropical diseases the subject of their prophylaxis is a very promising one, since the general principles on which efficient and economical preventive measures should be based are now well understood. In the application Of such general principles local conditions must be carefully considered, and thus in describing the various methods to be adopted those suitable for certain localities have been given as types. In the spread of many tropical diseases intermediate hosts play an important part, and the life-history of such hosts, Often insects, has been considered at some length, as a knowledge of this subject is essential to the proper understanding of the rationale Of the preventive measures proposed. An attempt has been made to group the diseases treated of according to their known or probable causation. Thus, in the first part those diseases are dealt with which, like Malaria, are known to be due to Protozoa, and others, such as Yellow Fever, which are probably due to such Organisms. In the second part diseases due to the higher forms Of animal life are considered. The third part is devoted to bacterial diseases, to the effects Of certain animal and vegetable poisons, and to certain diseases the causation of which is unknown or but imperfectly understood. The advantages Of this arrangement are considerable, as the general outline Of the prophylactic measures required differs for the diseases described in each part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Hygiene in Tropical and Semi-Tropical Countries a Popular Manual, Written for the Use of Foreigners, Residing in the Philippines, Cuba, and Other, Portions or the Tropics The colonization Of the tropics has been the dream Of the white race since the dawn of history. Nation after nation has endeavored to establish its people there, but one by one they have failed, and to-day the problem is still unsolved. What has been the cause Of this failure? Some answer that it is the heat that kills. Others maintain that the intense light is the cause Of the white man's decay in the tropics. These and many other theories have been advanced, and no doubt there is a basis Of truth for most Of them. To-day we know that failure to Observe the laws Of hygiene has in a measure caused the failure. That the native races thrive and multiply, living amid the worst hygienic surround ings, is not denied, but they appear to have, as a race, an immunity to their surroundings. One has but to compare the health reports of any tropical city with those Of European or Ameri can cities Of the temperate zone, to be convinced that a large part Of the sickness peculiar to the tropics is from preventable diseases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climate and Health in Hot Countries and the Outlines of Tropical Climatology: A Popular Treatise on Personal Hygiene in the Hotter Parts of the World, and on the Climates That Will Be Met With Within Them A hundred years ago a prolonged residence in the Tropics was regarded with well-founded horror. The best the white settler in the lands of the sun dared hope for was "a short life and a merry one," but too often the merriment was sadly lacking. When Olives father made interest to get his son a writership under "Old John Company," and packed off the troublesome lad to India, he probably regarded it as a last resource, and felt much as if he had signed the youths doom; but an age that hanged for sheep-stealing, or less, was like to be stern in its dealings with its children. We know now that what the father took for vice was but evidence of the superabundant vitality of a genius, and being one, Olive naturally possessed the originality to modify his habits to his new surroundings, and so survived to become an Empire-builder and hero. Nor was the case exceptional, for looking back on the history of our great Indian dependency, one cannot fail to be struck with the high average ability of the few who survived to attain leading positions. Furlough to Europe was almost impossible, and the hills were unknown, but in spite of this, many of these seasoned veterans who had learned their lesson lived, in the land of their adoption, to a green old age. But the rank and file, who could not or would not learn, died off like rotten sheep; and to this day it is the young and inexperienced, who have as yet not learned to adapt and protect themselves, who fall the readiest victims. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preventive Medicine and Hygiene This book has been written in response to a demand for a treatise based upon modern progress in hygiene and sanitation. The work is planned to include those fields of the medical and related sciences which form the foundation of public health work. So far as I know, no other book on the subject covers the broad field considered in this volume. The progress in hygiene and sanitation has been so rapid that the subject of preventive medicine has become a specialty, and its scope has become so broad that the question throughout the making of this book has been rather what to leave out than what to include. The facts here brought together are widely scattered in the literature and many of them are difficult of access; they have been collected for the convenience of the student of medicine and the physician, as well as those engaged in sanitary engineering or public health work. During twenty-three years of varied experience in public health work it has been my good fortune to have served as quarantine officer, in epidemic campaigns, in epidemiological investigations, and in public health laboratories, at home, on the Continent, and in the tropics. The fruits of these experiences are reflected in this book, which may be taken as representing my personal views gained in the field, in the laboratory, in the classroom, and in administrative offices.
