Book excerpt: This volume is the first in-depth analysis of how infirm bodies were represented in Italy from c. 1400 to 1650. Through original contributions and methodologies, it addresses the fundamental yet undiscussed relationship between images and representations in medical, religious, and literary texts. Looking beyond the modern category of ‘disease’ and viewing infirmity in Galenic humoral terms, each chapter explores which infirmities were depicted in visual culture, in what context, why, and when. By exploring the works of artists such as Caravaggio, Leonardo, and Michelangelo, this study considers the idealized body altered by diseases, including leprosy, plague, goitre, and cancer. In doing so, the relationship between medical treatment and the depiction of infirmities through miracle cures is also revealed. The broad chronological approach demonstrates how and why such representations change, both over time and across different forms of media. Collectively, the chapters explain how the development of knowledge of the workings and structure of the body was reflected in changed ideas and representations of the metaphorical, allegorical, and symbolic meanings of infirmity and disease. The interdisciplinary approach makes this study the perfect resource for both students and specialists of the history of art, medicine and religion, and social and intellectual history across Renaissance Europe.

Rudra was a teetotaler, but he haunted a dingy dim-lit bar, sipping soft drinks. Rudra did not expect anything from the women of the world’s oldest profession, but he walked a street where they waited to be picked up. Rudra craved, paradoxically, not only for solitude in darkness but also for a ray of non-interfering company in his lonely life. Rudra’s behavior was the result of a dysfunctional milieu’s conditionings, which had started attacking him right from kindergarten, and continued to do so all through the duration of his first job after graduation, until his unconditional love for Krupa enabled him to challenge and vanquish them. Rudra’s life finally walked unshackled, from the bondages of dark conditionings, proudly in the light with Krupa who also freed herself from her misery aided by his moral courage.

Through guides, examples, stories and lessons the reader learns how to type him/herself, family members, students, and friends and to delve into the mysteries of how the different temperaments interact with each other. Because these interactions are unique, depending on the age and relationship of the people, this book focuses only on the adult-child relationship which can differ greatly from the adult-adult relationship or the child-child relationship. However, while this book does focus on the relationships between adults and children, one can also benefit from reading the different sections and applying some of the wisdom to his/her own relationships with other adults or by extrapolating ideas from the sections to help siblings get along better. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augusta Webster was very widely praised in her own time—Christina Rossetti thought her “by far the most formidable” woman poet. Her work has again come into favour, so much so that Isobel Armstrong and her co-editors of the influential anthology, Nineteenth-Century Women Poets, declare that “there can be no doubt that Augusta Webster ranks as one of the great Victorian poets.” This collection is the first edition of Webster’s poems since 1895. It is a selection of her best work, emphasizing her powerful dramatic monologues and including a substantial number of her lyrics. With an introduction and background documents that highlight the distinctiveness of her work, this edition will help to re-establish Augusta Webster as a major figure of nineteenth-century English literature.

This new book will be perfect for anyone interested in the use of herbal medicine, in particular those who have read Brooke's best-selling earlier works including Herbal Therapy for Women . "The thesis of this book is the interconnectedness of all nature, human and plant kingdoms, and the underlying connection of a first principle which unites everything and from which and to which everything returns. We shall go on to discuss the four elements and humours and how the planets weave these differing energies through the vegetable and animal kingdoms which show us how Spirit is expressed in the plant, in the person and in the dis-ease." --from the author
