Legend has it that beer baron Captain Frederick Pabst convinced Colnik to come to Milwaukee, pointing to the commissions the talented craftsman could get from wealthy industrialists and merchants. Colnik's artistry and technical mastery transformed metal into works of beauty and permanence for clients including Pabst, Charles Allis of Allis-Chalmers Inc., Herman Uihlein of Schlitz Brewing Co., Lloyd Smith of the A. O. Smith Corporation, and many others. Colnik's creations in iron, brass, and bronze can still be seen at the Pabst Mansion house museum, Milwaukee's City Hall, Mader's Restaurant, Wisconsin Memorial Park, and in many other older buildings around the city. The largest collection is in Milwaukee's Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum (formerly the mansion of the Smith family), where visitors can see both the wrought metalwork that Colnik created for the Smith home and a permanent exhibition of objects, photographs, and archival material by and about Colnik. Assembled in the 19th century by Jean-Louis-Henri Le Secq Destournelles (1818-1882), the celebrated photographer of French architectural monuments, and his son Henri (1854-1925), it was shown to great acclaim in Paris at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. The collection encompasses a wide variety of functional and decorative objects--door knockers, garden implements, jewelry, keyhole escutcheons, locks and keys, bas reliefs, signs, strongboxes, surgical tools, prostheses, lamps, kitchen equipment, grilles, decorative plaques, among others. These range in date from the Mid¬dle Ages to the early 20th century. They show the versatility of iron as a material, conveying both masculine heft and an impossibly fragile delicacy that is hard to square with the metal's industrial image.The Le Secq collection served as an inspiration for Dr. Albert C. Barnes (1972-1951). He is known to have seen its holdings in the deconsecrated church of Saint-Laurent, former home of the younger Le Secq, where the collection was displayed, as it still is, in distinctive wall arrangements and custom-made vitrines. Starting in 1936, Barnes began to collect examples of European and American wrought iron, and these form one of the Barnes Foundation's most intriguing collections. Over time, Barnes incorporated 887 everyday objects into his signature ensembles, or wall arrangements, of old master and modern paintings. Barnes's displays underscored the formal affinities that the metalwork pieces that he collected shared with the "motives and arabesques" in the paintings in his gallery. An essay by Anne-Charlotte Cathelineau on the history of the Rouen collection and one by Richard J. Wattenmaker on Barnes's collecting of metalwork are accompanied by short essays exploring the fabrication, function, and intricate orna¬mentation of approximately 160 masterworks from the Musée Le Secq des Tournelles, Rouen. Book excerpt: All the sites in the book have been chosen with an eye toward several criteria, including how accessible they are to the public, how evocative experience a trip to them is likely to produce, and the extent to which they actually appear to be haunted. A great many in the various regions of Maryland have some connection to the Colonial era, the War of 1812, or the Civil War, all significant aspects of the state's haunted history. Maryland is divided into six regions for purposes of this book: Baltimore, Central, D.C. Metro, Eastern Shore, Southern, and Western. Geographically speaking, Maryland is not a large state. It is, however, among the oldest in the country, and has a rich, varied, and turbulent history that has contributed to an exceptionally high number of haunted sites. Because it is relatively compact, Maryland is in many ways an ideal state for a haunted roadtrip -- especially in an era of historically high gasoline prices -- and many haunted sites within the same area can easily be reached on a single weekend-long trip. Indeed, although my own home is currently in Northern Virginia, on the southern side of the Potomac River from Maryland, its furthest point from me is still somewhat less than 300 miles -- as opposed to nearly 500 for some of the most distant points in southwestern Virginia. Note that this outline includes more listings than there will be room for in the book, and that a number of these will either be cut, reduced to sidebars within larger chapters, or listed in the appendix of additional haunted sites. As with Ghosthunting Virginia, research revealed early on a striking number of sites reputed by various sources to be haunted. With space in this volume for only a limited number of these, the authors carefully attempted to identify a representative selection that both emphasized variety and a struck a balance between "must include" sites -- such as the graveyard where Edgar Allan Poe is buried -- and more obscure ones that do not appear in any other books.
