Writes, It requires the best discipline, the firmest spirit, and good officers, to storm works or to make an impression on British troops. Not that I suppose the Europeans will make better soldiers than the Americans, but that habitual discipline to which they are used and in which all their officers are initiated gives them a superiority over us, which nothing but a similar discipline or superior numbers can counterbalance. Discusses the division in Continental troops between northern (against Burgoyne in New York) and southern campaigns (near Philadelphia). Refers to the possibility of uniting American troops. Suggests that Reading, Pennsylvania serve as the site for a large cantonment. Covers other military matters including, deserters, promotions, and offices. Did not know of any person who had a superior Claim upon Government office in the region than he did. Thought that all Congressional appointments would be made independently of the previous appointments given by state governments, before the new federal government had come into existence. Adds that Mr. [George] Thatcher (he spells it Thacher), the Congressional representative for his region, has corresponded with several merchants to find candidates for the import and export offices. Seems to suggest that local politicians and local merchants are in such good acquaintance that appointments might be handed out based on favoritism. Further, Winslow has resided only briefly in Portland, and has no mercantile concerns as such, so fears he will be deemed unsuitable. Discusses his prospects and hopes that Knox might be able to help him receive an appointment.

Letter was repaired at a later date. Letter is unsigned. Free stamped on address leaf with no signature.

Replies to an earlier request from Colonel Jackson to enlist Hessians from a captured British ship: I have not mentioned to the General your request to be permitted to enlist some of [the Hessians], it is so repugnant to the good of the service and your own reputation... Discusses General William Howe's recent movements, and General John Sullivan's Continental force in Princeton, New Jersey. Is confused by the movements of the British. Assumed they intended to march to Philadelphia, but they instead fortified their position at Middlebrook, New Jersey. Notes that Mr. Howe, instead of marching to Philadelphia found himself almost blockaded in an open flat County. If Howe had attempted to march on Philadelphia, Knox asserts he should probably had twenty five thousand or thirty thousand militia upon his back... Describes Howe's retreat, at one a.m. the morning of 19 June. While Howe plundered on his way, he was intermittently followed and attacked by American militia. Predicts Howe to attack on the North River (the Hudson). Reports that General John Burgoyne is active near Fort Ticonderoga, and Genl Howe must make an attempt or push for a junction. Notes that the enemy, by all appearances, is leaving New Jersey.

Details the fighting from 2 January onward. Discusses the American retreat from Trenton, for which the artillery provided cover, Washington's decision to next attack Princeton where about 1200 men were stationed by the British, and the late night march to Princeton. Admits we did not take them by surprise as at Trenton, because the British soldiers were already marching when the Continentals encountered them, whereas in Trenton they had been totally out of order. But still thinks the enemy were as much asstonish'd as if An Army had drop'd perpendicularly upon them, because the British thought the Americans were still coop'd up in Trenton. Describes the initial American victory, largely involving bayonets, in which the British lost nearly 800 men. Lists the American officers lost in the fight. The Americans then decide to pull out of Princeton to stay ahead of the main British forces which are advancing. Washington had hoped to move on to New Brunswick and strike again, but the men were too tired. If they had had 1,000 fresh men they could have moved on to New Brunswick and struck one of the most Brilliant strokes in all History. Knox writes that instead the Americans would have to settle for the fact that they drove the British away from Philadelphia and almost out of West Jersey. Mentions a few other minor skirmishes, and feels the Americans are doing well. Paraphrasing Shakespeare's Julius Caesar he says There is a tide in the affairs of men which if taken at the ford leads on to victory. Thanks God for what he sees as a positive turning of the tide and hopes this same feeling will so prevail on the hearts of the people as to induce them to be a people chosen of Heaven...never to dispair of the Commonwealth. Feels that New England and her hardy sons have a key role to play in this struggle. Despite his happiness Knox knows that the State of War is uncertain. Victorious to day defeated tomorrow. States that the Americans shall try to make another stroke or two upon them. Closes by expressing his love for her and his desire to see her.
