Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for the Determination of Metals in Environmental Samples presents a detailed description of 13 analytical methods covering 35 analytes that may be present in a variety of sample types. The methods involve a wide range of analytical instrumentation including inductively coupled plasma (ICP)/atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), ICP/mass spectroscopy (MS), atomic absorption (AA) spectroscopy, ion chromatography (IC), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The application of these techniques to such a diverse group of sample types is a unique feature of this book. Sample types include waters ranging from drinking water to marine water, in addition to industrial and municipal wastewater, groundwater, and landfill leachate. The book also includes methods that will accommodate biological tissues, sediments, and soils. Methods in this book can be used in several regulatory programs because of their applicability to many sample types. For example, ICP/AES, ICP/MS, and AA methods can be used in drinking water and permit programs. Methods applicable to marine and estuarine waters can be used for the EPA's National Estuary Program. Terminology is consistent throughout the book, an important feature especially for the quality control sections where standardized terminology is not yet available. Methods for the Determination of Metals in Environmental Samples is an indispensable methods guide for all environmetal labs, wastewater labs, drinking water labs, lab managers, consultants, and groundwater engineers.

Book excerpt: Part of Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water Set - buy all five books together to save over 30%! There is increasing concern regarding the presence of metals, particularly heavy metals in drinking water. In addition to the well-known toxic effects of lead, which are discussed at length in the Best Practice Guide on the Control of Lead in Drinking Water (in this series of Guides), the latest WHO guide values for maximum mean concentrations of arsenic, nickel and others in drinking water have been lowered compared to previous versions. European Union, USA and National standards for drinking water have followed the trend based largely on the same toxicological information. There is currently growing interest in the presence of hexavalent chromium in drinking water following its finding in some drinking waters in the USA above the national upper limit for total chromium and research suggesting that this limit needs to be considerably lowered. Some metals, particularly iron and manganese are associated with the production of discoloured (dirty) water in distribution systems and are therefore very important to the production of water with acceptable aesthetic qualities. Others (iron and aluminium) are key to the treatment of raw waters to drinking water standards. In most cases it is not possible to continuously monitor waters for metals and suitable sampling programmes must be designed and carried out to give results representative of the true water quality. The Best Practice Guide on Sampling and Monitoring of Metals in Drinking Water gives guidance on the design and quality control of sampling programmes for metals in Raw waters, in the water treatment works, in the drinking water distribution system and at the consumers tap. It also gives guidance on the analytical methods that can be used for the analysis of metals and quality control of those methods. Sampling programmes on the same water will vary according to the purpose for which they are carried out and the statistical techniques used to determine and design the different types of programme are outlined. Finally some case studies of optimisation of sampling are set out. Best Practice Guide on Sampling and Monitoring of Metals in Drinking Water is a valuable text for scientists, engineers and quality managers working in drinking water supply, laboratory managers and scientists who carry out sampling and analysis, and water industry consultants. It is also an excellent resource for post graduate and research workers in the field of drinking water. Editor: Dr Adam Postawa, AGH University, Krakow, Poland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace-metal water quality sampling is plagued by poor technique. In many instances, the sampler contributes upwards of 80% of the metal concentration that is not present in the original sample. Expensive water treatment options are the unintended consequence. The complicated approach used for the past 25 years is broken down into simple steps without specialized equipment. The less is more approach drastically reduces potential contamination sources during the sampling process. The book pinpoints hundreds of conditions and anticipated concentrations that add pollutants during the sampling process. Duplicate samples are examined to determine why there is a difference in values. Cosmetics, brake dust, clothing, jewelry, eyeglasses, wind direction, sample location, and structures contribute minimal metal contamination. Included is the information to understand waterway characteristics and contamination sources. The video training that accompanies this book is at www.ospreyowl.com. Thus, you can reach the next level of being a water sampling expert. Ricardo (Rick) Cantu is semi-retired, owner of OspreyOwl Environmental, and has worked in the wastewater field for 42 years. Rick's introduction to 'Clean Sampling' happened in 1993 as Project Manager for the Taunton, Massachusetts Wastewater Plant. Subsequent positions included overseeing the pretreatment and Phase II MS4 programs for Manchester, NH. These programs required extensive sampling, a second nature activity for this Author. In 2000 the EPA began issuing permits in New Hampshire and Massachusetts requiring metal limits. Rick successfully completed a study with the NHDES that removed metals treatment from the Manchester Permit. After retirement, Rick completed similar sampling projects for several plants in both states. Again, the result was metals concentrations below Water Quality criteria and the elimination of metal limits in facility permits. Rick's documented experience and success provide a road map for obtaining high-quality, trace-metal data under many sampling scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of metals is a major part of the work of environmental testing laboratories. EPA and DEP methodology releases provide information only for selected areas of metals sampling and analysis, and their language makes them unsuitable for teaching and training purposes. Environmental Sampling and Analysis for Metals is a comprehensive and easy-to-read text for laboratory technicians and analytical chemists who need a guide for analyzing metals in environmental samples and a reference for analytical and quality control procedures. The book provides both theoretical and practical applications in metals analysis of environmental samples and incorporates the latest in analytical techniques, instrumentation, and regulations. Topics include sample collection, preservation, step-by-step analytical procedures, complete QA/QC requirements, data validation, and more. It also provides an overview of the occurrence, source, and fate of metallic substances in the environment, as well as their control by regulations and standards. Furthermore, the authors provide guidelines to help you prepare and understand reports. The analytical methods presented in Environmental Sampling and Analysis for Metals will be useful to anyone who produces, uses, or evaluates analytical data, and will be a valuable tool in environmental education and training programs.
