Book Synopsis Sampling Methods Applied to Fisheries Science by : Emygdio L. Cadima
Download or read book Sampling Methods Applied to Fisheries Science written by Emygdio L. Cadima and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this manual is to present the basic and standard concepts of sampling methods applied to fisheries science. In order to ensure sound fisheries research, it is essential to have reliable data from landing ports, fishery stocks and research surveys. A rational management of fishing resources can then be established to ensure a sustainable exploitation rate and responsible fisheries management, providing long-term benefits for all. This document provides an introduction to sampling theory and introduces the theory of the three worlds (population, sample and sampling), as well as a short revision of probability concepts. It also provides an overview of the simple random, random stratified, cluster and two-stage sampling methods. The expressions for estimating the mean and total of the populations, their sampling distributions, the expected values, the sampling variances and their estimates are included and justified for each of the sampling designs. The document also contains a case study of biological sampling from landing ports and exercises that should be used to further understanding of the objectives of sampling and its advantages for fishery resource studies.

Download or read book Standard Methods for Sampling North American Freshwater Fishes written by Scott A. Bonar and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the first effort to standardize methods for inland fish sampling across North America and, as such, was a joint effort contributed to by a large group of talented and dedicated individuals, in addition to the authors and coeditors. While these sampling methods were primarily developed for North America, most could be used with little or no modification in other areas of the world. Those involved with standard sampling efforts in North America would welcome the opportunity to collaborate with scientists from other regions to develop methods to share data worldwide.

Download or read book Manual of Fisheries Sampling Surveys written by Evelina Sabatella and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual contains guidance on data collection methods for developing socio-economic indicators, and it can be used to facilitate and simplify reporting under international conventions and agreements on matters relating to the sustainable fisheries development. The methodologies can be applied to fisheries at many different levels, from individual fisheries and coastal management units to a global level, and it aims to encourage consistent use of statistical methods in data collection.

Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper considers issues of sampling accuracy when sample-based data collection operations are performed under operational constraints, a concern of fishery administrations with limited budgets and human resources. It focuses on the determination of safe sample size using classical statistical methods in light of specific target populations. The concepts and methods discussed apply equally to both marine and inland capture fisheries, and can be adapted to commonly used data collection systems.

Twenty-one participants attended the Workshop: 11 experts, 2 FAO observers and 8 FAO secretariat members. During the Workshop, the drafts of the Toolbox and the Guidebook for Evaluating Fisheries Co-management Effectiveness were presented. The experts were invited to advice on tools and reference materials to perform the evaluation process envisaged in the Guidebook. The experts’ inputs and recommendations received on best practices, indicators, examples of approaches for measuring the indicators, suggested tools and resources will be employed to improve the Toolbox and the Guidebook.
Book Synopsis Sampling Theory by : David G. Hankin
Download or read book Sampling Theory written by David G. Hankin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sampling theory considers how methods for selection of a subset of units from a finite population (a sample) affect the accuracy of estimates of descriptive population parameters (mean, total, proportion). Although a sound knowledge of sampling theory principles would seem essential for ecologists and natural resource scientists, the subject tends to be somewhat overlooked in contrast to other core statistical topics such as regression analysis, experimental design, and multivariate statistics. This introductory text aims to redress this imbalance by specifically targeting ecologists and resource scientists, and illustrating how sampling theory can be applied in a wide variety of resource contexts. The emphasis throughout is on design-based sampling from finite populations, but some attention is given to model-based prediction and sampling from infinite populations. Sampling Theory is an introductory textbook suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, professional researchers, and practitioners in the fields of ecology, evolution, conservation biology, and natural resource sciences (including fisheries, wildlife, rangeland, ecology and forestry).
