Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of an international symposium on sample preparation, held at the University of Surrey, and jointly organised by the Chromatographic Society and the Robens Institute. The Chromatographic Society is the only international organisation devoted to the promotion of, and the exchange of information on, all aspects of chromatography and related techniques. With the introduction of gas chromatography in 1952, the Hydrocarbon Chemistry Panel of the Hydrocarbon Research Group of the Institute of Petroleum, recognising the potential of this new technique, set up a Committee under Dr S.F. Birch to organise a symposium on "Vapor Phase Chromatography" which was held in London in June 1956. Almost 400 delegates attended this meeting and success exceeded all expectation. It was to afford discussion of immediately apparent that there was a need for an organised forum development and application of the method and, by the end of the year, the Gas Chromatog raphy Discussion Group had been formed under the Chairmanship of Dr A.T. James with D.H. Desty as Secretary. Membership of this Group was originally by invitation only, but in deference to popular demand, the Group was opened to all willing to pay the modest sub scription of one guinea and in 1957 A.J.P. Martin, Nobel Laureate, was elected inaugural Chairman of the newly-expanded Discussion Group.

However, the frequently observed very high discrepancies between the analyt ical results of different laboratories as well as the deviations from true values are, regrettably, still common in analytical practice. Basic methodological errors at the determination step can usually be minimized or even avoided by carefully per formed quality control measures - e. g. by interlaboratory comparisons and the proper use of certified reference materials. The most severe and often under estimated error sources, however, are those connected with the whole and often extremely complex sampling process, and also to a lesser extent, with sample pre paration prior to analysis. Thus, for these initial steps of an analytical procedure particular experience is needed, as well as a detailed knowledge of the interrela tions between these steps, which always have to be applied with the utmost care. As a response to the need to improve the quality of environmental analysis, the European Commission has been active in the past fifteen years, through BCR activity (now renamed Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme) in the organisation of series of interlaboratory studies involving expert laboratories in various analytical fields (inorganic, trace organic and speciation analysis applied to a wide variety of environmental matrices). The BCR and its successor have the task of helping European laboratories to improve the quality of measurements in analytical sectors which are vital for the European Union (biomedical, agriculture, food, environment and industry); these are most often carried out in support of EC regulations, industrial needs, trade, monitoring activities (including environment, agriculture, health and safety) and, more generally, when technical difficulties hamper a good comparability of data among EC laboratories. The collaborative projects carried out so far have placed the BCR in the position of second world CRM producer (after NIST in the USA).Interlaboratory Studies and Certification of Reference Materials for Environmental Analysis gives an account of the importance of reference materials for the quality control of environmental analysis and describes in detail the procedures followed by BCR to prepare environmental reference materials, including aspects related to sampling, stabilization, homogenisation, homogeneity and stability testing, establishment of reference (or certified) values, and use of reference materials. Examples of environmental CRMs produced by BCR within the last 15 years are given, which represent more than 70 CRMs covering different types of materials (plants, biological materials, waters, sediments, soils and sludges, coals, ash and dust materials) certified for a range of chemical parameters (major and trace elements, chemical species, PAHs, PCBs, pesticides and dioxins).The final section of the book describes how to organise improvement schemes for the evaluation method and/or laboratory performance.
