In those early yearts, these pioneer/converts of the Church had to face a great deal of persecution as they struggled to establish branches and districts throughout those beautiful islands of the sea. These early pioneers welcomed the coming of the Gospel with the arrival of Joseph H. Dean and subsequent early missionaries and were determined to assisst them in the unfolding of the work in Samoa. As the first rays of the Gospel began to dawn and spread over the islands, the going was tough but they prevailed a left for us a legacy that lives to this day and has become a strong foundation for the remarkable growth of the Church in Samoa today. In this book, readers will find wonderful stories of faith and courage as told in portraits, even glimses into the life stories of the early pioneers of the Church in Samoa..."--Publisher information.

Book excerpt: If you’re interested in Church-related events on the American Samoan islands during the early twenty-first century, then you need this book. Following up on his first book on the history of the Assemblies of God Church in American Samoa, author Fuimaono Fini Aitaoto delves deeper into church life on these South Pacific islands. Geared for Bible college students, pastors, and researchers, he answers questions such as: • What role has Christianity played in the lives of most Samoans? • What notable changes have recently occurred within American Samoa’s churches? • What is the financial condition of various churches? • What role does politics play in church life? While there is ample literature on the history and developments of churches in American Samoa and the Pacific from the late 1800s to the 1980s, there are not nearly as many resources updating the world on new church developments. This book fills that void.

It is an unincorporated territory of the United States, meaning that it is under American sovereignty but is not part of the 50 states. American Samoa consists of five volcanic islands and two coral atolls that cover an area of approximately 76 square miles. The islands have a tropical climate and are largely covered in lush rainforest with a diverse range of flora and fauna. American Samoa is home to a diverse culture that has been shaped by its unique history and geographical location. The islands were originally settled by Polynesian explorers, who brought with them their traditions, religion, and language. In 1899, the United States annexed the islands, and American Samoans became US nationals. Today, the islands are governed by an elected governor and legislature, and the people of American Samoa have a unique cultural identity that reflects their rich history and their position between Polynesia and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Mormon Historical Association Best Community History In the late nineteenth century, a small community of Native Hawaiian Mormons established a settlement in heart of The Great Basin, in Utah. The community was named Iosepa, after the prophet and sixth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph F. Smith. The inhabitants of Iosepa struggled against racism, the ravages of leprosy, and economic depression, by the early years of the twentieth century emerging as a modern, model community based on ranching, farming, and an unwavering commitment to religious ideals. Yet barely thirty years after its founding the town was abandoned, nearly all of its inhabitants returning to Hawaii. Years later, Native Hawaiian students at nearby Brigham Young University, descendants of the original settlers, worked to clean the graves of Iosepa and erect a monument to memorialize the settlers. Remembering Iosepa connects the story of this unique community with the earliest Native Hawaiian migrants to western North America and the vibrant and growing community of Pacific Islanders in the Great Basin today. It traces the origins and growth of the community in the tumultuous years of colonial expansion into the Hawaiian islands, as well as its relationship to white Mormons, the church leadership, and the Hawaiian government. In the broadest sense, Mathew Kester seeks to explain the meeting of Mormons and Hawaiians in the American West and to examine the creative adaptations and misunderstandings that grew out of that encounter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1920, David O. McKay embarked on a journey that forever changed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His visits to the Latter-day Saint missions, schools, and branches in the Pacific solidified the Church leadership's commitment to global outreach. As importantly, the trip inspired McKay's own initiatives when he later became Church president. McKay's account of his odyssey brings to life the story of the Church of Jesus Christ’s transformation into a global faith. Throughout his diary, McKay expressed his humanity, curiosity, and fascination with cultures and places--the Maori hongi, East Asian customs, Australian wildlife, and more. At the same time, he and his travel companion, Hugh J. Cannon, detailed the Latter-day Saint missionary life of the era, closely observing logistical challenges and cultural differences, guiding various church efforts, and listening to followers' impressions and concerns. Reid L. Neilson and Carson V. Teuscher's meticulous notes provide historical, religious, and general context for the reader.Blending travelogue with history, Pacific Apostle illuminates the thought and work of an essential figure in the twentieth-century Church of Jesus Christ.
