Book excerpt: In an isolated castle on the outskirts of a city in the Albanian mountains, the wildly ugly painter of blasphemies, Samalio Pardulus, executes works too monstrous to bear viewing, and espouses a philosophy that posits a grotesque world which reflects the ravings of a dead, grotesque god. Told through the horrified account of Messer Giacomo (a mediocre artist at once repulsed and fascinated by the events unfolding around him), Samalio Pardulus describes the simultaneous descent and ascent of the titular antihero into a passionate perversion of Catholicism in which love and madness become one, as a dark, incestuous incubus settles into a doomed family. When it was first published in 1908, Otto Julius Bierbaum's gothic novella--the first of his Sonderbare Geschichten ("Weird Stories")--offered a Gnostic stepping-stone between German Romanticism and the nascent Expressionism that had not yet taken root. It presents the grotesque not just as a way of life, but as a godly path to a higher vision, even when it appears to be but a manifestation of evil. This first English edition includes the full set of illustrations by Alfred Kubin from the book's 1911 German edition. Otto Julius Bierbaum (1865-1910) was a German novelist, poet, journalist and editor. His 1897 novel Stilpe inspired the first cabaret venue in Berlin a few years later; his last novel, the 1909 Yankeedoodlefahrt, produced a German proverb still in use today: "Humor is when you laugh anyway."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) was an artist who fought against innumerable odds to learn his craft and to find his medium and his audience. Although in both his life and his art he often exhibited a capricious disregard for causality and revelled in inconsistencies, his work conveys his determination to interpret, analyse, and illuminate the world as he saw it. He felt that his own being was ravaged by a struggle between the demands of logic and the seduction of imagination. His life ranged between these polarities, and his finest art was created during those moments when he brought the two extremes into balance.

Book excerpt: Collection of two documentaries by Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington. 'Which Way is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington' (2013) shows how Tim travelled the world documenting conflicts in Afghanistan, Liberia and Libya, among other locations, accompanied by his friend and long-term collaborator Sebastian. The two strived to capture the humanity within conflict situations and with their images they focused on the individuals involved and their experiences of the violence surrounding them. Unfortunately, in 2011 Tim was killed by a mortar blast and this film is a tribute and celebration of the legacy he has left behind and includes interviews with those who knew him best. 'Restrepo' (2010) chronicles the year that Junger and Hetherington spent in Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair magazine. Embedded with an army unit in the treacherous Korangal valley, the pair lived in close proximity with the men as they defended an outpost called Restrepo after PFC Juan S. Restrepo, a platoon medic who was an early casualty in the campaign.
