Book excerpt: While the growth in both numbers and influence of Hispanics in North American Catholicism and Protestantism has been commented on widely, up until now there has been no systematic attempt to define a Hispanic theology. Roberto Goizueta, a Cuban-American theologian, aware that "Hispanic" and "Latino" can be terms imposed artificially on diverse peoples, finds a common link in the Spanish language and in a shared culture. Central to this culture is the experience of exile, of being a people at the margins of a society, who must find and make their way together. Central also is faith, and its grounding in this experience of being in exile. In delineating the very particular nature and worldview of Hispanic/Latino theology, Caminemos con Jesus challenges both traditional Euro-American theologies and modern Western epistemological assumptions. It examines the implications of this theological method for the Church and the academy, as well as for the future of the Latino community and North American society. Caminemos con Jesus provides lessons in discipleship for non-Hispanics and Hispanics alike, for students of contemporary theology, and all those engaged in pastoral and church-based work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics in the West too often equates morality with universal moral principles, thus imposing lifestyles and moral criteria that do not respect differences and local histories. Even Christianity proposes ethics that is based on eternal, absolute and universal truths or principles, independent of sociocultural and historical contexts. The problem is that these universal moral laws become a means of social control to exclude those who are different: non-Christian religions, nonwhite races, non-Western cultures, and poor and marginalized social classes everywhere. To these can be added minorities marginalized because of sexual orientation, physical handicaps, and women of all sectors and cultures. Another kind of ethics is urgent. For these reasons, Christians in Latin America and other parts are seeking innovative ways of envisioning ethics from their marginalized and discriminated social locations in order to find another possible ethics, an ethics that is not universal and not based on eternal truths or principles, but rather is contextual and historical and that takes into account real-life realities. Only an ethics that does this will be liberative. Important steps toward this other possible ethics have been taken by the theology of liberation by developing a contextual and intercultural morality.

Book excerpt: Ferment in the Intercultural Field: Axiology/Value/Praxis, Volume 26 of The International and Intercultural Communication Annual examines how the field of intercultural communication has encouraged new techniques in the area of research. Editors William J. Starosta and Guo-Ming Chen, along with a diverse group of distinguished contributors, recall the 1983 topical issue of The Journal of Communication that reported a critical turn and a shift of paradigms in communication research. Offering a postmodern critique of some of the more common approaches to research, this volume treats the researcher as an instrument and welcomes multiple voices in research, invites critique and self-reflection, rethinks rhetoric, categorizes research assumptions, and considers the researched a partner in a research conversation. Ferment in the Intercultural Field critiques western perspectives and looks for applications that will improve intercultural frictions and misunderstandings. The volume also includes analyses that speak to "ferment" in terms of axiology, values, and praxis. Recommended for scholars and researchers in the area of intercultural communication, Ferment in the Intercultural Field is also a vital resource for upper-level undergraduate and graduate communication students. About the Editors: William J. Starosta, Ph.D., teaches coursework in intercultural communication, qualitative research, and rhetoric at Howard University. He has held elective office in two professional societies and is founding editor of the Howard Journal of Communications. He presently conducts research in inter-ethnic conflict, intercultural rhetoric, and intercultural communication theory. Guo-Ming Chen, Ph.D., is Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island. He was the recipient of the 1987 Outstanding Dissertation Award presented by the SCA International and Intercultural Communication Division. His primary research interests are in intercultural/organizational communication, including the areas of global communication, communication competence, conflict management, and cultural values and language.

Book excerpt: This is an historical survey of 20th Century Roman Catholic Theological Ethics (also known as moral theology). The thesis is that only through historical investigation can we really understand how the most conservative and negative field in Catholic theology at the beginning of the 20th could become by the end of the 20th century the most innovative one. The 20th century begins with moral manuals being translated into the vernacular. After examining the manuals of Thomas Slater and Henry Davis, Keenan then turns to three works and a crowning synthesis of innovation all developed before, during and soon after the Second World War. The first by Odon Lottin asks whether moral theology is adequately historical; Fritz Tillmann asks whether it's adequately biblical; and Gerard Gilleman, whether it's adequately spiritual. Bernard Haering integrates these contributions into his Law of Christ. Of course, people like Gerald Kelly and John Ford in the US are like a few moralists elsewhere, classical gate keepers, censoring innovation. But with Humanae vitae, and successive encyclicals, bishops and popes reject the direction of moral theologians. At the same time, moral theologians, like Josef Fuchs, ask whether the locus of moral truth is in continuous, universal teachings of the magisterium or in the moral judgment of the informed conscience. In their move toward a deeper appreciation of their field as forming consciences, they turn more deeply to local experience where they continue their work of innovation. Each continent subsequently gives rise to their own respondents: In Europe they speak of autonomy and personalism; in Latin America, liberation theology; in North America, Feminism and Black Catholic theology; and, in Asia and Africa a deep post-colonial interculturatism. At the end I assert that in its nature, theological ethics is historical and innovative, seeking moral truth for the conscience by looking to speak crossculturally.

Book excerpt: PERRAULT’S STORIES: English & Spanish THIS EDITION: The dual-language text has been arranged into sub-paragraphs and paragraphs, for quick and easy cross-referencing. The Spanish translation has been modernised and amended to suit this dual language project. The revised English text is in part a translation from Spanish. Essentially, Perrault’s fairy tales have been rewritten in contemporary English from the Spanish translation. The emphasis is on attaining a high correlation between each set of text fragments. The stories were originally written in French. The reader can choose between four formats: Section 1: English to Spanish Section 2: Spanish to English Section 3: English Section 4: Spanish BRIEF SYNOPSIS: This book is a collection of eight fairy tales that were originally published in 1697. The Grimm brothers rewrote many of these stories. However, in many ways they are remarkably different versions. The full title, as translated into English, is “Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals: Tales of Mother Goose.” The Spanish subtitle is, “Los Cuentos de Mamá Ganso.” The stories include: Sleeping Beauty in the Woods Cinderella Little Finger Puss in Boots Riquet with the Tuft Blue Beard The Fairy Little Red Riding-Hood AUTHOR: Charles Perrault (1628 – 1703) is often times considered the founder of the modern fairy tale genre. Although, some of his stories follow themes from earlier authors, and he did not coin the phrase ‘fairy tale’. (A Dual-Language Book Project) 2Language Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicling sixteenth-century Spain to the present day, Beyond Human aims to decentre the human and acknowledge the material historicity of more-than-human nature. The book explores key questions relating to ecological equity, justice, and responsibility within and beyond Spain in the Anthropocene. Examining relations between Iberian cultural practices, historical developments, and ecological processes, Maryanne L. Leone, Shanna Lino, and the contributors to this volume reveal the structures that uphold and dismantle the non-human–human dichotomy and nature-culture divide. The book critiques works from the Golden Age to the twenty-first century in a wide range of genres, including comedia, royal treatises, agricultural reports, paintings, satirical essays, horror fiction and film, young adult and speculative literature, poetry, graphic novels, and television series. The authors contend that Spanish cultural studies must expose the material historicity that entangles today’s ecological crises and ecosocial injustices with previous, future, and contemporary entities. The book argues that this will require the simultaneous decentring of the human and of the Anthropocene as an ecocritical framework. By standardizing ecosocial analysis and widening avenues for ecopedagogical approaches, Beyond Human participates in the ecocentric transformation of Hispanic cultural studies.
