Book Synopsis Final Report on Salvage Excavations at the Leone Bluff Site, 5LA1211, Trinidad Reservoir, Las Animas County, Colorado by : Robin Cordero
Download or read book Final Report on Salvage Excavations at the Leone Bluff Site, 5LA1211, Trinidad Reservoir, Las Animas County, Colorado written by Robin Cordero and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave action associated with high lake levels at Trinidad Reservoir, Las Animas County, Colorado in 1999 and 2000 caused slumping and erosion of cultural deposits at the Leone Bluff Site (5LA 1211), a Sopris Phase habitation dating roughly AD 950-1200. As water levels fell, artifacts and human remains eroded from those deposits were scattered the surface of a wave-cut terrace that surrounded the site. The exposed human remains were discovered on May 28, 2000, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District (USACE) contracted the Office of Contract Archeology, University of New Mexico (OCA) to assess the damage and conduct emergency data recovery. The damage assessment and surface collection was completed in June 2000 under MIPR no. W81G6901538023. Subsequently, the USACE authorized testing and additional data recovery at the site under Contract No. DAC-W47-99-D-0023, Deliver Order 0004. This second phase of fieldwork was completed in August, 2000. Letter reports of these activities were submitted to the USACE in June and September, respectively (Doleman 2001, 2000b). The excavations recovered three human burials, one dog burial, identified two new structures, and 6,904 artifacts were collected. Owing to funding constraints, production of a final descriptive and analytical report was not authorized until 2007 under USACE Contract No. W912PP-06-D-0001, Delivery Order 0007. In addition to the analytical report, the USACE authorized two options for additional work--development of a GIS database of documented sites in the Trinidad Reservoir area, and a bag inventory of the 5LA1211 collection curated at the Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum (LHAM), Trinidad State Junior College. Although these options had separate deliverables, the results of the bag inventory are also summarized in the various analytical chapters of the report. This report presents the final results of the salvage excavations; analyses of the flaked lithic, ground stone, ceramics, and faunal remains; and integration of these results with previous research at the Leone Bluff site. The USACE provided funding for basic analyses of the artifacts and human remains recovered, and preparation of the report. Several researchers also volunteered their time to complete specialized analyses like the XRF pilot studies and analysis of the basket-impressed ceramics, which allowed OCA to leverage the funding provided by the USACE. Because this was essentially a salvage excavation project, most of the artifacts and other cultural materials from the site were collected from disturbed or secondary deposits. Artifact analysis therefore was directed primarily toward providing a basic description of the artifact assemblage. Some research problems that could be addressed using artifact attributes were also investigated, however. Consequently, although the report is primarily descriptive, it does provide some new information concerning lithic reduction strategies, ceramic production, textiles, and exchange patterns during the Sopris Phase that will be of use to future researchers.

Book excerpt: This volume, dedicated to the Hellenistic terracotta from Maresha, is the second in a series of final reports on the Israel Antiquities Authority excavations at Maresha, directed by Prof. Amos Kloner. These large-scale excavations, held during the years 1989-2000, were conducted mainly in the Lower City of Maresha. Excavations of the surface areas and some of the subterranean complexes were undertaken mainly in the years 1989-1994, while the excavations from 1995 to 2000 concentrated mainly on some of the subterranean complexes. A few of the finds included in this volume were found in our surveys and earlier excavations during the 1980s, especially 1986 and 1987. As the excavations continued in several subterranean complexes between 2001 and 2008, the authors have also included some later finds.

Book Synopsis New Frontiers in the Neolithic Archaeology of Taiwan (5600–1800 BP) by : Su-chiu Kuo
Download or read book New Frontiers in the Neolithic Archaeology of Taiwan (5600–1800 BP) written by Su-chiu Kuo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the systematic research on the Neolithic cultures of Taiwan, based on the latest archaeological discoveries, and focusing on the maritime interactions between mainland southeast China, Taiwan, and southeast Asia during (5600-1800 BP). The study demonstrates and sheds light on the distinctiveness of Taiwan’s Neolithic cultures, their interactions with the external cultures of its surrounding regions, the maritime cultural diffusion and early seafaring across sea regions like the Taiwan Strait, Bashi channel and South China Sea. Drawing on the author’s deep understanding of Taiwan and its surrounding regions, the book also incorporates recent archeological findings by Taiwanese researchers. Further, based on a new reconstruction of the spatiotemporal framework of Taiwanese prehistoric cultures, the chronologically arranged chapters discuss Neolithic cultures of the early, middle, late and final stage of this island region, revealing the prehistoric cultural development, regional typology and their maritime interactions with surrounding regions. The typological study of the native traits and external cultural influences of each stage of Neolithic culture shows the prehistoric and early history of this key stepping stone in the Asia-Pacific region.

Book Synopsis DAN IV - The Iron Age I Settlement by : David Ilan
Download or read book DAN IV - The Iron Age I Settlement written by David Ilan and published by Hebrew Union College Press. This book was released on 2020-04-25 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive final report David Ilan and 12 other contributing authors present the rich finds from the Iron Age I (circa 1200-950 BCE) levels at Tel Dan, gleaned in the course of Avraham Biran's 1966-1999 excavations at the site. The architecture, ceramics, metal, flint, bone and ground stone objects and ecofacts, all contribute to the portrayal of a cosmopolitan society that thrived, initially, under Egyptian imperial rule, subsequently forging its own way with the departure of Egyptian hegemony. The early Iron Age levels at Tel Dan show material evidence for the presence of local peoples, Egyptians, Cypriots, Aegeans, and Syrians, who together, negotiated a new identity, as Danites.
