Book excerpt: This book provides a scientific forecast of development in aquaculture with a focus on the environmental, technological, social and economic constraints that need to be resolved to ensure sustainable development of the industry and allow the industry to be able to feed healthy seafood products to future generations. The chapters discuss the most critical bottlenecks of the development. They encompass subjects of understanding the environmental impacts, the current state-of-the-art in monitoring programs and in coastal zone management, the important interactions between wild and cultured organisms including release of non-native species into the wild.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantic Salmon is a cultural icon throughout its North Atlantic range; it is the focus of probably the World’s highest profile recreational fishery and is the basis for one of the World’s largest aquaculture industries. Despite this, many wild stocks of salmon are in decline and underpinning this is a dearth of information on the nature and extent of population structuring and adaptive population differentiation, and its implications for species conservation. This important new book will go a long way to rectify this situation by providing a thorough review of the genetics of Atlantic salmon. Sponsored by the European Union and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, this book comprises the work of an international team of scientists, carefully integrated and edited to provide a landmark book of vital interest to all those working with Atlantic salmon.

Book excerpt: With millions of different bacterial species living in soil, the microbial community is extremely complex, varying at very small scales. Microbe-driven functions are essential for most processes in soil. Thus, a better understanding of this microbial diversity will be invaluable for the management of the various soil functions. Nucleic Acids and Proteins in Soil combines traditional approaches in soil microbiology and biochemistry with the latest techniques in molecular microbial ecology. Included are methods to analyse the presence and importance of nucleic acids and proteins both inside and outside microbial cells, the horizontal gene transfer which drives bacterial diversity, as well as soil proteomes. Further chapters describe techniques such as PCR, fingerprinting, the challenging use of gene arrays for structural and functional analysis, stable isotope probing to identify in situ metabolic functions, and the use of marker and reporter genes in soil microbial ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish welfare is currently one of the most important concerns in aquaculture, and knowledge on how to improve fish welfare should be practical and implementable for all aquaculture farms. The objective of this Research Topic is to extend the current knowledge on fish welfare and to identify more comprehensive and practical indicators of the existing standard for fish welfare that are easily, more comprehensive and practical indicators in order to make it easy to implement on fish farms. A secondary objective is to identify which welfare issues are most relevant. It is important to mention that good fish welfare cannot simply be extrapolated from terrestrial animals. It has to take into consideration that different species of fish must also be taken into consideration. Whether these are species of commercial interest or not, they have different behaviour and respond differently to stress, and consequently, require a species-specific approach to improving their welfare. Intensive fish production systems have important negative consequences for the animals including impaired health and erratic behaviour. For many industries, their main goal is to achieve higher production whilst majority of the time, welfare is not take it into consideration. Better conditions for intensively produced farm animals, including fish, should result in improved efficiency and performance and higher quality product for consumers. We welcome papers demonstrating such effects. This research topic is related to the welfare of farmed fish. Fish welfare is related to how we treat our fish: the type of feed, how often we feed them, the stocking density that it is used, the environment where they are growing, how we grow them, from fertilized egg to fish ready to sell for public consumption. This Research Topic should address fish welfare during the whole growth period, and may also include papers on the attitudes and perceptions of stakeholders, including fish farmers and public about fish welfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to quantify and discuss how societies have directly and indirectly benefited from ecosystem services in Patagonia; not only in terms of provisioning and cultural services, but also regulating and supporting services. Patagonia, a region that stretches across two countries (ca. 10% in Chile and 90% in Argentina), is home to some of the most extensive wilderness areas on our planet. Natural grasslands comprise almost 30% of the Americas, including the Patagonian steppe, while Patagonian southern temperate forests are important for carbon sequestration and storage, play a pivotal role in water regulation, and have become widely recognized for their ecotourism value. However, profound changes are now underway that could affect key ecosystem functions and ultimately human well-being. In this context, one major challenge we face in Patagonia is that ecosystem services are often ignored in economic markets, government policies and land management practices. The book explores the synergies and trade-offs between conservation and economic development as natural landscapes and seascapes continue to degrade in Patagonia. Historically, economic markets have largely focused on the provisioning services (forest products, livestock) while neglecting the interdependent roles of regulating services (erosion and climate control), supporting services (nutrient cycling) and cultural services (recreation, local identity, tourism). Therefore, the present work focuses on ecosystem functions and ecosystem services, as well as on trends in biodiversity and the interactions between natural environments and land-use activities throughout Patagonia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing crisis in our oceans: mysterious outbreaks of infectious disease are on the rise. Marine epidemics can cause mass die-offs of wildlife from the bottom to the top of food chains, impacting the health of ocean ecosystems as well as lives on land. Portending global environmental disaster, ocean outbreaks are fueled by warming seas, sewage dumping, unregulated aquaculture, and drifting plastic. Ocean Outbreak follows renowned scientist Drew Harvell and her colleagues into the field as they investigate how four iconic marine animals—corals, abalone, salmon, and starfish—have been devastated by disease. Based on over twenty years of research, this firsthand account of the sometimes gradual, sometimes exploding impact of disease on our ocean’s biodiversity ends with solutions and a call to action. Only through policy changes and the implementation of innovative solutions from nature can we reduce major outbreaks, save some ocean ecosystems, and protect our fragile environment.
