Book excerpt: Nowadays, Muslims are living all over the world. Our children are living in non-Muslim societies. They do not hear the sweet sound of Azan from the mosque, and they are not learning the prayers at school or hearing them on TV. When we want to teach them the prayers or talk about Islam, we find it very difficult or even impossible because we were not trained how to teach Islam. It gets even more complicated because we pray in Arabic, which is a foreign language for many of us. It becomes discouraging, and many quit, with later regrets. We do not realize how much the environment teaches the child about God and religion until we find ourselves in a position of losing our children to other faiths. To make the matter even worse, we do not have the tools to teach the religion in a way our children can relate to. In many cases, we lose them. We create adults that say we do not believe in God. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) has taught us not to impose our old ways of life and upbringing to the children because they were born for a different time. That is why my books are written for kids that live in the Western world, in a way they can relate to. In this book, Lost in the Woods, children learn the Salawat and the use and importance of it. My books will hopefully get our children ready for Salat. May Allah help me in this journey.

These Majlis Dhikr groups have proliferated on Java in the last two decades, both in urban and rural areas, and have attracted followers from a wide social background. The diverse aspects of these Majlis Dhikr groups - their rituals, teachings and strategies of dissemination as well as the popular understanding of these rituals and their contestation by critics and opponents - are examined in detail and illustrated by reference to three particular groups - Salawat Wahidiyat, Istighathat Ihsaniyyat and Dhikr al-Ghafilin each of which has its own distinctive features and notable religious leadership. These Majlis Dhikr groups regard their activities as legitimate ritual practices that are in accordance with the legacy of Islamic Sufism based on the interpretation of the Qur'anic and Prophetic tradition.

Book excerpt: Blessings of Ṣalawāt: Upon the Holy Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is a practical spiritual manual concisely organized to better understand the importance of conferring blessings upon the Beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. This work is the second title in the Wirdul ʿAam Series. The series outlines the Spiritual significance of the Wirdul ʿAam Dhikr formulated by Imam Abul Ḥasan Ash-Shādhilī (RA), as it pertains to the Dhikr of Ṣalawāt or the conferring of blessings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Almighty Allah ﷻ directs us in Sūratul Aḥzāb, "Verily, Allah and His angels send blessings on the Messenger of Allah. O you who believe, invoke blessings on him, and salute him with a worthy salutation." Our purpose of invoking blessings upon the Beloved ﷺ leads to close proximity to Almighty Allah ﷻ by obeying this command, while simultaneously fulfilling our rights upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It is crystal clear how important the invocation of Ṣalawāt is for the believer, and it is a Mercy of Almighty Allah ﷻ for its rewards to be multitudinous. Abundant Ṣalawāt upon the Beloved ﷺ leads to loving him and knowing his beautiful qualities. By that virtue, degrees of purity are realized. From the signs of the people of the Sunnah is sending Ṣalawāt upon him, for the key to all goodness is Ṣalawāt upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Book excerpt: In the age that we live in, our days have become our nights, and our nights have become our days wherein we are continually focusing on matters of this temporary life and turning a blind eye to that which matters, such as the teachings of the best of creation, the one who uttered in a supplication: "O Allah, my Nation, my Nation!", the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This compilation is unique in that each form of prayer highlights the connection between the Messenger ﷺ and the Names and Qualities of Allah ﷻ. In addition, each form includes a unique supplication for the one reciting it. The reciter of these prayers thus finds himself engaging in the remembrance of Allah ﷻ by calling Him through His Most Sublime Names, and asking Him to send prayers and increase the honour and rank of the Messenger ﷺ. By doing this, he obtains the virtues and reward of sending prayers upon the Prophet, and also supplicates to Allah, asking Him such amazing things that we are generally unable to think of when asking of Him. The author, Ḥabīb ʿUmar bin Ḥafīẓ, is a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. ﷺ, and one of the great luminaries of our time. This salawat collection has been made available to English speakers for whom we ask Allah ﷻ to make it a means to attain proximity, in this life and the Hereafter, to Him ﷻ and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

After Allah Ta'ala whose favours are beyond calculation, it is the one who was sent by Allah Ta'ala as the mercy to the worlds, Muhammad PBUH the last Messenger who was the greatest benefactor mankind has ever had. In this day, when neither have we the ability to see nor converse with the Prophet PBUH we have either forgotten his favours upon us, or we do not appreciate them. One must remember, however, that truth, even if ignored or forgotten, still remains the truth. The Prophet PBUH was sinless, and had the guarantee of Allah's Ta'ala eternal and infinite love, yet he spent night after night, day after day, begging Allah Ta'ala for our salvation. The physical torture hurled at him by the opposition for propagating Islam, the psychological anguish suffered by him when seeing his beloved followers persecuted and the mental torment undertaken by him in his unending concern for his people are all but a small part of the debt that we owe to this selfless man PBUH. And yet, Allah Ta'ala has not only commanded the sending of salutations upon the Prophet PBUH, but in fact Divine generosity knows no bounds in respect to the reward in lieu of it. For instance one Hadith states, "Whoever prays once for blessings upon Muhammad is blessed himself ten times over by the One who sent him." Muslim This is Allah's Ta'ala sheer blessing upon us that we should be rewarded for thanking Allah's Messenger PBUH for what he has done for us. As love for the Messenger is a part of Eman, so should we make Salawat upon him a part of our daily routine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book Of Remembrances [Kitab al-Adhkar] – By Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf an-Nawawi Kitab al-Adhkar is the definitive compilation of words of remembrance and glorification of (dhikr), and supplicatory prayer to (du’a), the Lord of the Universe, as related from His final Emissary, the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless and exalt him). Dhikr and du’a lie at the very heart of the din, the relationship between creature and Creator. As part of the Sunna or Prophetic Way, they are a divinely appointed means of approaching Allah Most High for all our needs, and of making use of all the moments of daily life to strengthen our tawhid, the existential and cognitive Unity that is the hallmark of Muslim spirituality. Also covered are the vital principles of speaking only what is good and avoiding the sins of the tongue. The author, Muhy al-Din Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676/123-1277) devoted his entire life to the pursuit of sacred knowledge. He is revered throughout the Sunni world as one of its greatest authorities. Among his most famous writings are the Arba’in, a collection of forty Hadiths; a commentary on the Sahih of Imam Muslim; and Kitab al-Adhkar. Designed as a reference guide and a source of inspiration, this volume presents a clear and elegant English translation of Imam al-Nawawis classic, together with the text of every single prayer and invocation, both in Arabic letters and in romanisation. Also included are all the authors statements about those Hadiths which he related personally from his own teachers, and his guidance on the correct spelling and meanings of rare words and names. Finally, al-Nawawi's comments on the sources of Hadiths are supplemented by further scholarly notes.

Book excerpt: The Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt represents the largest Christian community in the Middle East today, but few works have appeared that discuss the situation of the contemporary Church. The Coptic Church has preserved ancient Christian traditions in a unique way. Not only has it survived centuries of living in a predominantly Muslim environment, but it has also managed to renew itself continuously during its long history. This book covers, for the first time, the most important aspects of the contemporary Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt and in the diaspora, bringing together new knowledge which would otherwise remain largely inaccessible except to a small number of specialists.

Book excerpt: There is a tendency within the study of Islam to prioritize religious ideology over the lived experiences of ordinary Muslims. While affirming the significance of such ideology, Dr. Judy Wanjiru Wang’ombe suggests that it is equally important to understand how Islamic teachings are actually lived out within Muslim communities. Utilizing a cognitive anthropological framework and drawing from qualitative field data, this study examines the phenomenon of spirit possession as experienced by Borana Muslims in Marsabit County, Kenya. Dr. Wang’ombe analyzes the practices and beliefs of the Ayyaana possession cult in light of stipulations provided by official Islamic texts, specifically the Qur’an and Hadith as taught by their Muslim teachers, and explores the prominent gaps that often exist between tenet and practice. An excellent resource for scholars and practitioners alike, this study enhances anthropological understanding of contextual Islam as practiced in East Africa, while offering insight into local perspectives on the spirit world.
