Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Teresa (1515-1582) T teresa was born in Avila, in the kingdom of Spain, March 28, 1515, and baptized in the Church of St. John Baptist, April 4th, Wednesday in Holy Week. On that day Mass was said for the first time in the Monastery of the Incarnation of the Order of Carmel, where she spent so many years of her life as one of the religious of that house. Her father, Don Alfonso Sanchez de Cepeda, of an old and honorable race, was twice married and twice widowed. His first Wife was dona-catalina del Peso y Henao, by whom he had three children, one girl and two boys. His second wife, Dona Beatriz Davila y Ahumada, was the mother of nine children, seven boys and two girls. The elder of the two daughters, and the third child of the marriage, was St. Teresa, known for many years of her life as Dona Teresa Sanchez Cepeda Davila y Ahumada. Don Alfonso was a man of solid piety, most charitable to the poor and the sick, very gentle and considerate with his servants. Dona Beatriz also took all pains to bring up her children in the fear and love of God, devout to our Lady and the saints, and thus laid the foundations of the Spiritual life of her daughter, who, before she was seven years old, would give alms out of the little money she had, and contrive to be alone that she might say her prayers, especially the Rosary. St. Teresa in playing with the other children would delight in imitating religious, and she tells us that she believed she wished to be a nun, but yet not so much as she wished to be a hermit or a martyr. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Teresa (1515-1582) And Her First English Daughters In 1474, Ferdinand, Prince of Aragon, married Isabella, Queen of Castile and Leon - Shakespeare's "Queen of earthly queens," Bacon's "Corner stone of the greatness of Spain," Aubrey de Vere's "great and holy creature, sweet and brave, type of faithfulness in word and deed, flower of all perfections known on earth." In truth, she came as near, perhaps, as could an earthly king or queen to the ideal sovereign; and - at least in his early manhood - Ferdinand was not unworthy to reign at her side. Five years after their marriage he succeeded to his father's crown, and the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon were again united. Then began the golden age of Spain: the insolence and rapacity of the grandees yielded to the sweetness and strength of Isabella; the peasants could raise their heads as well as their hearts and hands; and, as the Sovereigns passed from one tribunal to another, to preside over each in the old Castilian style, justice and peace followed in their train. The whole face of the country was changed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a compilation of the greatest works on spiritual development and life by St. Theresa of Avilla. As a reformer of the church doctrines, Theresa rethought the notion of spiritual development and created her own methodic of contemplative life that should lead to spiritual perfection. As a creator of the new order, she created these works to teach her followers of her methods, which consisted of meditation, spiritual quiet, the daily prayer, which should eventually lead to spiritual unity with the Creator. Each of the presented books had a significant impact on the development of Christian thought and belonged to the most important achievements of the Spanish literary heritage. This edition includes: "The Interior Castle" - is a guide to spiritual development through service and prayer. It is one of the leading books in the oeuvre of Saint Therese of Avilla and one of the most famous works in Spanish literature. The book was inspired by Theresa's vision of a soul as a diamond in the shape of a castle with seven mansions. She interpreted this dream as the spiritual journey through seven stages, after which a soul is united with God. "Way of Perfection" - is a spiritual instruction given by Theresa of Avila to the nuns of her new Order. She believed that spiritual perfection could be attained by overcoming four stages of prayer: meditation, quiet, repose of soul, and perfect union with God. According to Theresa, the last stage of spiritual development can often be equated to rapture. "The Life of St. Theresa of Avila" - In this book, she gives a warm and accessible account of her life, from childhood to the conflicts and crises she had, to her decision to enter a prayer life and become a spiritual leader and a passionate reformer of the church doctrines. Here, she talks about her education in sixteenth-century Spain, physical afflictions, and spiritual crises which led to visions and mystical encounters. She also gives lyrical descriptions of the ecstatic feelings she experienced during her raptures. Alongside Don Quixote, this book is a treasure of Spanish prose and one of the most outstanding achievements of the world's literature.
