Book excerpt: Paul the Antichrist? When a Christian hears this statement they will immediately respond: "Who in their right mind could ever think such a terrible thing of St. Paul?" Through our history many have questioned the writings of 'St. Paul' and questioned his authority to speak for Jesus, seeing how he never met him or heard him teach. What distinguishes Jesus' teaching is that he taught and practiced the Jewish Torah and taught his disciples about a 'narrow road and a narrow gate that very few would find in order to have eternal life', by denying themselves and taking up their cross and following him. In contrast Paul taught his Gentile disciples that the Torah was abolished by Jesus and that 'broad was the road and wide was the gate that led to salvation' and many would enter and be saved by following him [Paul]. We are confronted here with two distinct gospels: one that the apostles of Jesus received directly from him and another 'new gospel' that Paul claims to have received by a private revelation from Jesus himself; one, the 'gospel of grace' which today many people believe and many follow, and the other, the 'gospel of the kingdom' which very few have received and have followed.

Book excerpt: The author presents new arguments which support the view that Paul, not Jesus, was the founder of Christianity. He argues that Jesus and also his immediate disciples James and Peter were life-long adherents of Pharisaic Judaism. Paul, however, was not, as he claimed, a native-born Jew of Pharisee upbringing, but came in fact from a Gentile background. He maintains that it was Paul alone who created a new religion by his vision of Jesus as a Divine Saviour who died to save humanity. This concept, which went far beyond the messianic claims of Jesus, was an amalgamation of ideas derived from Hellenistic religion, especially from Gnosticism and the mystery cults. Paul played a devious and adventurous political game with Jesus' followers of the so-called Jerusalem Church, who eventually disowned him. The conclusions of this historical and psychological study will come as a shock to many readers, but it is nevertheless a book which cannot be ignored by anyone concerned with the foundations of our culture and society. -- Book jacket.

Book excerpt: The doctrine of the Antichrist is one of the most interesting doctrines found in Scripture, says author Kim Riddlebarger. Unfortunately, it's also one which has been subject to far more speculation than sound biblical exegesis. Until now. Unlike other resources available on the Antichrist, The Man of Sin focuses on Scripture, not contemporary events, to uncover the truth about this mysterious entity. With skilled exegesis Riddlebarger asserts that, contrary to popular speculation, the Antichrist is not a singular individual but a series of beings that will arise to challenge Christ throughout the inter-advental age before culminating in an end-times Antichrist. Backing this claim first in Scripture, Riddlebarger also draws from historical teachings including those of the church fathers, the Reformation, and historic Protestantism, before contrasting this evidence to the sensational interpretations of many contemporary writers. Pastors, teachers, and study groups wanting to understand the doctrine of the Antichrist will find The Man of Sin to be a unique and comprehensive study.

Book excerpt: The new church at Thessalonica is under fierce attack. Opposing Jewish leaders have caused a riot and driven the church-planting team out of town. But amazingly, against all odds, the new congregation begins to grow and attract converts from the pagan population of the city. What's more, it becomes a model congregation among the fledging Christian movement in the Mediterranean region. 1 and 2 Thessalonians, written about 50 AD, are the earliest documents in the New Testament. They reveal the Apostle Paul's heart and passion as he seeks to guide this congregation towards health and balance. In 1 and 2 Thessalonians you'll learn important truths about Christ's coming -- specifically regarding the rapture and the Antichrist. Paul explains how to deal with overly-dependent members, God's grace in selecting his children, the heart and character of a disciple-maker, a high view of sexual purity, and keys to a healthy Christian congregation. This volume covers the two letters in nine lessons. Classes and small groups will find this a helpful curriculum guide to their study 1 and 2 Thessalonians with links to free participant handouts, as well as thorough preparation for the leader. Thought-provoking questions will stimulate many insightful discussions. These heavily-footnoted lessons provide most of the research that preachers and teachers will need. At the same time, these lessons will inspire and challenge the individual reader to grow as a disciple.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hippolytus of Rome (170–235) was the most important 3rd-century theologian in the Christian Church in Rome, where he was probably born. Photios I of Constantinople describes him in his Bibliotheca (cod. 121) as a disciple of Irenaeus, who was said to be a disciple of Polycarp, and from the context of this passage it is supposed that he suggested that Hippolytus himself so styled himself. However, this assertion is doubtful. He came into conflict with the popes of his time and seems to have headed a schismatic group as a rival Bishop of Rome. For that reason he is sometimes considered the first antipope. He opposed the Roman bishops who softened the penitential system to accommodate the large number of new pagan converts. However, he was very probably reconciled to the Church when he died as a martyr. Starting in the 4th century, various legends arose about him, identifying him as a priest of the Novatianist schism or as a soldier converted by Saint Lawrence. He has also been confused with another martyr of the same name. Ironically, it is Pius IV who identifies him as "Saint Hippolytus, Bishop of Pontus" who was martyred in the reign of Alexander Severus through his inscription on a statue found at the Church of St. Lawrence in Rome and kept at the Vatican as photographed and published in Brunsen.
