Book excerpt: Joseph is the most hidden of the saints a simple, retiring, and humble man of Nazareth. His exterior life reveals nothing extraordinary or striking. Yet he is exalted by the Church as, next to Mary herself, the greatest of all the saints and even Patron of the Universal Church. Do you know why? This remarkable book finally breaks the silence. Drawing not on private revelations or pious legends, this beautiful and edifying work unearths many truths about St. Joseph hidden in the Gospel, to bring them to light and make use of them in Josephs honor. Here youll encounter surprising details about the life Joseph led on Earth in the most intimate companionship of Christ as well as the role he is playing even today in the life of the Universal Church.

This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Joseph is a descendant of the House of King David. After being espoused to the Virgin Mary, he found her with child and, being "a just man and unwilling to put her to shame" (St. Matthew 1:19), decided to divorce her quietly; but an angel told him that the child was the Son of God and was conceived by the Holy Ghost. Obeying the angel, Joseph took Mary as his wife. After Jesus' birth at Bethlehem in Judea, where the Holy family received the Magi, an angel warned Joseph and Mary about the impending violence against the child by King Herod the Great of Judea, whereupon they fled to Egypt. Years later the angel again appeared to Joseph, informing him of Herod's death and instructing him to return to the Holy Land. Avoiding Bethlehem out of fear of Herod's successor, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus settled in Nazareth (St. Matthew 2:22-23) in Galilee, where Joseph taught his craft of carpentry to Jesus. Joseph is last mentioned in the Gospels when he and Mary frantically searched 3 days for the 12 year old Jesus in Jerusalem, where they found him in the Temple (St. Luke 2:41-48). Joseph's death is believed to have occurred before Jesus' public ministry, as he is no longer mentioned. Although the veneration of Joseph seems to have begun in Egypt, the earliest Western devotion to him dates from the early 14th century, when the Servites, an order of mendicant friars, observed his feast on March 19, the traditional day of his death. Among the subsequent promoters of the devotion was Pope Sixtus IV, who introduced it at Rome c. 1479, and the celebrated 16th-century mystic St. Teresa of Avila. Already patron of Mexico, Canada, and Belgium, Joseph was declared patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870. In 1955 Pope Pius XII established the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker as May 1 in counter-celebration to the Communists' May Day. Recitation of the Little Office of Saint Joseph has been granted a partial indulgence according to the Enchiridion of Indulgences. However, there is no current version of this Office that conforms to the modern Office of the Church: the Liturgy of the Hours. This new composition of the indulgenced Office retains the essential structure of the original, while integrating it into modern usage. As Wednesday is traditionally viewed as being linked to Saint Joseph, it would be especially significant to pray this Office each Wednesday.

Book excerpt: "Spend your life in honouring St. Joseph, and your love and homage will never equal the love and homage paid to him by Mary; it will approach never so distantly to the obedience, the love, the homage paid to him for thirty years on earth by the Son of God. But in proportion as your heart grows towards him in the reverence and unbounded confidence of a son will you trace in your soul a more faithful copy of the Incarnate Word."-Letter on Devotion to St. Joseph, by Herbert, Bishop of Salford, 1877. Passages from the visions and revelations of saints and holy contemplatives-St. Bridget, Sister Maria of Agreda, and others-have been interwoven with the.narrative, simply in the way of illustration, and not as being invested with authority, except in the sense in which, after due examination, they have been favoured with ecclesiastical approval: namely, as containing nothing contrary to faith. and morals, and affording pious and profitable helps to meditation. Finally, observations and reflections have been introduced as occasion offered which were suggested by various authors whose works have been consulted, or which occurred to the writer's own mind from consideration of the materials before him. It is no uncommon idea, even among Catholics, that the devotion paid to St. Joseph and the lofty estimate of his prerogatives now prevailing in the Church are innovations of comparatively modern date, and that they have no precedent or sanction in antiquity. In heaven St. Joseph's prayers and requests are regarded by Christ as "commands." This form of novena was originally devised by the celebrated Fr. Louis Lallemant, S.J. (1587-1633). It has proved particularly effective in obtaining favors through the intercession of St. Joseph. This saintly priest and great master of the spiritual life, to whom St. Joseph never refused anything he asked, ensures those that make this novena that they will obtain everything they ask through the intercession of this great saint if, in turn, they will show him special honor and spread devotion to him among others. 54 pp. softcover
