Book excerpt: The quarrel between the ancients and moderns was resumed in the 17th century as writers and artists debated how far to risk the freedom to innovate. This text argues that it was this tension that gave unity to the cultural life of the period and helped define its baroque character.

Download or read book Sublime Worlds written by Emma Gilby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the language we come across, in reading other peoples' works or listening to others speak, moves us profoundly. It requires a response from us; it occupies and involves us. Writers, always readers and listeners as well, are fascinated by this phenomenon, which became the subject of the classical treatise On the Sublime , traditionally attributed to Longinus. Emma Gilby looks at this compelling and complex text in relation to the work of three major seventeenth-century authors: Pierre Corneille, Blaise Pascal and Nicolas Boileau. She offers, in each case, intimate critical readings which spin out into broad interrogations about knowledge and experience in early modern French literature.

Download or read book Saint-Evremond written by Denys Potts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The celebrated French critic and thinker Charles de Saint-Evremond (1614-1703) spent much of his life in exile in London, where he wrote most of his major works. The letters in the present collection, long thought to have been lost, were rescued from obscurity by Denys Potts, and are published here for the first time. Written to Madame de Gouville, whose friendship he happily rediscovered in his declining years, and to the Abbe de Hautefeuille, secretary to the Duchesse de Bouillon, the two series of interwoven letters form a single narrative which, for sheer spontaneity and verve, is matched only by the letters of Madame de Sevigne. This edition represents the largest single discovery of Saint-Evremond letters, and includes many that were previously inaccessible in private collections."

Book Synopsis Nobility Reimagined by : Jay M. Smith
Download or read book Nobility Reimagined written by Jay M. Smith and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mature nationalism that fueled the French Revolution grew from patriotic sensibilities fostered over the course of a century or more. Jay M. Smith proposes that the French thought their way to nationhood through a process of psychic adjustment premised on the reimagining of nobility, a social category and moral concept that had long dominated the cultural horizons of the old regime. Nobility Reimagined follows the elaboration of French patriotism across the eighteenth century and highlights the accentuation of key, and conflicting, features of patriotic thought at defining moments in the history of the monarchy. By enabling the articulation of different futures for nobility and nation, the patriotic awakening that marked the old regime helped to create both the quest for patriotic unity and the fierce constitutional battles that flowered at the time of the Revolution. Smith argues that the attempt to redefine and restore French nobility brought forth competing visions of patriotism with correlating models of the social and political order. Although the terms of public debate have changed, the same basic challenge continues to animate contemporary politics: how to reconcile inspiring and unifying nationalist ideals—honor, virtue, patriotism—with persistent social frictions rooted in class, ideology, ethnicity, or gender.
