Book excerpt: The people of ancient times were inclined to give their attention not only to the external world of inert matter, but also to the world within, the vital world of consciousness. Those sages who understood the importance of such contemplation comprise the prime subject matter of this book. Especially in the troubled world of today, it is by the conscientious study of their activities and teachings that we may come to understand the Absolute Truth, or the Ultimate Reality, and attain lasting peace and joy. The pastimes of such great, sagely personalities have been narrated in detail in an ancient collection of works known as the Puranas, as well as in timeless epics such as the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and other Vedic literatures. In this book, Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaja, a bona fide self-realized representative of the bhakti (devotional) lineage, has narrated important episodes and addressed salient points from these literatures. Thus, the avid reader may understand their inner meaning and apply this knowledge to their search for real happiness. Ultimately, such unadulterated, permanent happiness, according to the devotional tradition, is realized as the attainment of pure love of God, Sri Krishna.

He’s soon assigned a charming young magician who’s meant to protect him from the assassin, and they grow romantically close—which comes with a host of dangerous complications and secrets. Zaya expected to be the irresponsible youngest prince his whole life. But when his two older siblings are killed by an unidentified magician, he finds himself crowned king of Lushrain—the end of his liberty as he knows it. As part of his training, he’s sent to Heartwood for a month, the house of the sages high in the mountains. There, to his shock, the sages tell him he must learn about magic—which is illegal to practice, but has nonetheless been among Heartwood’s secret studies for centuries. They assign Col as his tutor, a charming young sage with unusually strong powers. Zaya abhors and distrusts magic, and Col absolutely doesn’t want the job of attempting to change the king’s mind. But in their lessons and debates, they grow closer and begin envisioning a future in which a sage and a king might make a harmonious couple. But the assassin still roams, seeking to hurt Zaya, and the budding love affair may be crushed by the secrets that Heartwood—and Col—have kept about this killer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament is an ancient collection of theological reflections of life with God that the church has claimed as authoritative Scripture. Whereas most introductory books march from Genesis to Malachi, this book engages four important leadership roles across the breadth of the Old Testament canon: king, prophet, priest, and sage. Despite the obvious differences between the societies of ancient Israel and modern America, lessons can be learned from our ancestors in the faith. This engaging volume is intended for people who want to know more about the Old Testament, whether in personal study, church groups, college classrooms, or seminary courses. The book may be used profitably in concert with Theological Themes of the Old Testament: Creation, Covenant, Cultus, and Character (Cascade Books, 2010).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an engaging analysis of the global spiritual changes of the first millennium BCE. Between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE, several new, revolutionary religious and philosophic movements were born throughout the world. Rather than using the well-known label “Axial Age” to refer to this time of religious change, the book argues that a better choice would be the “Age of Awakening”, since it places more emphasis upon the personal, internal dimension of religious experience lying at the core of these developments. Earthshattering spiritual encounters with the sacred led the prophets and sages of the Age of Awakening to redirect people’s attention away from the stagnant traditions of the past towards new forms of dynamic spirituality. The era saw the emergence of a variety of innovative spiritual pathways in both the eastern and western worlds. In classical Greece, Pythagoras and Plato proposed new spiritual and intellectual alternatives to the outdated religious myths and rituals of the polis. The Middle East also played a significant role in the spiritual revolution of the first millennium BCE. As early as the sixth century BCE, the Persian prophet Zoroaster’s revelatory visions about the Truth and the Lie led to the birth of a new religious movement known as Zoroastrianism. At the time of the Babylonian Exile, ancient Judaism underwent a process of radical spiritual renewal largely due to the inspired teachings of the Hebrew prophets. In India, the writers of the Upanishads provided a spiritual reinterpretation of many of the old Vedic myths and rituals. Sages including the Buddha and Mahavira rejected the old sacrificial system of the brahmins and asserted that liberation from the cycle of birth and death could only be found through the practice of asceticism and a general withdrawal from the illusory material world. As such, this book highlights the importance of the de-stabilizing influences of religious experience for understanding the revolutionary spiritual developments of the first millennium BCE.

Book excerpt: There is a path leading to authentic manhood, cut by men who have gone before us, sons following in the footsteps of their fathers, generation after generation. There are perils along the trail, even disasters?all the more reason to rely on the guidance of a Father who has gone before. But in an age when true fathers are in short supply, how do you find the path to manhood? How do you steer clear of the dangers? John Eldredge calls men back to a simple and reassuring truth: God is our Father. In life's trials and triumphs, God is initiating boys and men through the stages of manhood from Beloved Son to Cowboy to Warrior to Lover to King to Sage. Fathered by God maps out the path of manhood?not more rules, not another list of principles, not formulas, but a sure path men have followed for centuries before us. Find that path and become the man God sees in you.

Book excerpt: The makeup of every man is based on the fundamental design of the Creator. Using Himself as the Pattern, God the Father has designed man with certain universal attributes. Not every man is the same, but neither is he so unique as to have nothing in common with his brothers.Much of our study in times gone by has been geared toward understanding and appreciating the differences that exist between men. However it is time that men understand some of the things that make them uniquely "men". First and foremost, men must be an expression of their Creator or they will never truly know the meaning of being fulfilled.Jesus is the first born among many brethren. Of this the scripture leaves no doubt. He was not only the first, but He was also the full representation of the essence of God the Father here on earth. As such, we have in Jesus the fullness of God to see in fleshly form. The purpose of this book is to take the four major presentations of Jesus, which are also the four major presentations of a man who is reaching his potential, and make them understandable, reachable, and emulatable. This book is designed to be used in conjunction with the "King, Warrior, Sage, Lover" seminars conducted by Lifeflow. However, it still has value even for those who have not been through that seminar and who do not yet understand the makeup of their own manhood.Whether you know who you are as a king, a warrior, a sage, and a lover is not important if your desire is to grow in each. The key to growth in this as in all Christian endeavors is to emulate Jesus in one's daily life. It is this clear picture of Jesus held firmly in our heart and mind, and to which we compare ourselves daily, that provides a target or goal for which we aim. This picture of Jesus, this clear vision of Him as the one we want to be like, is our hope for the future. We may not be there yet, but if we persist, we will. That picture of Jesus, the man we want to become, is our "hope".That striving daily to act differently, to bring ourselves into accordance with that picture in our heart and mind, that intention and action to live our life differently, that is our "Faith". Faith literally means to live or conduct your life in accordance with something. So as we seek to act like Jesus as opposed to our own way, that is our faith in action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the failure of the conventional idea of God spell the end of the Christian tradition? Or does it simply mean the end of conventional Christian doctrine? Christianity without God affirms the latter, treating Christian culture as a living and evolving stream. In this cogently argued book, Lloyd Geering brings the resources of his deep scholarship to look at what the world really needs from contemporary religion. His inspiration is the cultivation of the wisdom of Christianity, not a dependence on beliefs about a supernatural saviour.
