Book excerpt: Two years into the all-girl Archbishop Keough High School, I became a naked plaything for a powerful priest who was a counselor there, Father A. Joseph Maskell. This brand-new state-of-the-art school was comprised of 1200 young students who had competed for the honor of being there. I was one of the lucky few accepted into this school. Little did I know then about the dark monster there whose immense power provided him easy access to the girls he considered ripe for the taking. My memoir speaks about how I survived the rampant sex ring at Keough which led to a nun being murdered because she tried to stop the abuse. I am an attorney who was featured in the Emmy nominated docuseries, The Keepers, which aired on Netflix on May 19, 2017, in 175 countries in 25 languages. This production changed my life and made me a celebrity to its many viewers from around the globe. People continue to watch The Keepers which is still promoted as one of the best true crime shows on Netflix. Viewers reach out to me for guidance and to share their stories of abuse on a daily basis. Safe in Socks is my story. I'm not an easy person to understand. Trust is difficult for me. Life as I knew it crumbled and fell into pieces after a trusted priest and his friends sexually abused me in all sorts of perverted ways. I built walls to protect myself and rarely allowed anyone into what I call my inner sanctum, my inner-most self. Slowly, I became able to gather the pieces of my shattered life and reassemble them to survive.... then thrive. This memoir unfolds my journey starting with my carefree childhood, through teenage insanity, growing into adulthood, and finally realizing my dream of becoming an attorney.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sock is a work of wonder. No other knitted garment has as many structural demands or endures as much wear and tear. The humble sock must defy gravity, suffer the confines of our shoes, and endure being trampled on all day long. All too often, the root cause of a sock's triumph or failure is the yarn itself. In The Knitter’s Book of Socks, Clara Parkes shows you how to knit socks from yarn up, following the sock yarn life cycle from its foundations to its final moments on a proud foot. By understanding a sock's basic needs—elasticity, strength, and moisture management—you’ll learn how to play with these tools like building blocks, confidently combining fiber, twist, ply, pattern, and clever stitch tricks to construct your perfect pair of socks. To help put these principles into practice, The Knitter’s Book of Socks also offers 20 fresh, original patterns from today’s sock-design luminaries, including Cookie A, Cat Bordhi, Ann Budd, Nancy Bush, Anne Hanson, and Melissa Morgan-Oakes. The socks presented here run the gamut from simple knit-and-purl combinations suitable for beginners to innovative designs with lush colorwork, swirling cables, and delicate lace. Understanding the elements of yarn is the first step on every successful sock knitting journey. With this book as your guide, you’ll learn how to make any sock yarn shine and love every pair of socks you knit.

"This picture book's strength is in the forthrightness of its message and the sensitivity of its presentation: Regina's father's actions are implied but never stated, and Regina’s trust in her teacher is firmly in place before the situation unfolds...The text and digitally enhanced artwork work together well to express the book’s message smoothly. The characters, especially Regina, dominate the illustrations, which are notable for their clear lines and interesting and varied textures and colors. This helpful picture book will raise children’s awareness of sexual abuse without raising anxiety."—Booklist starred review Mrs. Salvador is one tough teacher. But Regina Lillian Hadwig, a very quiet student, doesn't mind. She likes the order and discipline Mrs. Salvador expects. At a report card conference, Mrs. Salvador tells Regina’s mom that Regina is doing a great job, but that she is very quiet. "Are you quiet at home, like you are in school?" Mrs. Salvador asks Regina. And Regina thinks of the secret she keeps so quiet—the one even her mom doesn’t know, about the secret things her father does. "Yes, I’m quiet at home, too," says Regina. "Maybe we can work on that," says Mrs. Salvador. When Mrs. Salvador reads a book about Stranger Danger, she emphasizes one thing—that the person doing the inappropriate touching might not be a stranger at all. It might be someone a child knows very well. Will Regina find the courage to tell Mrs. Salvador her terrible secret?

This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on his more than twenty years as a practicing physical therapist, author Kevin Lockette has compiled an unparalleled resource for home caregivers: A Caregiver's Complete Guide for Safe Mobility and Independence in the Home delivers exactly what its title states. Lockette's numerous strategies and tips focus on how to offer safe caregiving, especially as it relates to the care-receiver's mobility and independence. But he also gives attention to the safety of the caregiver, because, as he wisely notes, "If a caregiver is injured, it frequently results in the care-receiver losing the ability to remain in a community setting." This book has easily referenced chapters on such topics as body mechanics (including principles of safe lifting), guidelines for transfers (including considerations for body type and various disabilities), adaptive and assistive devices for the care-receiver, fall prevention and fall-proofing the home, and information on types of wheelchairs. He also includes detailed instructions (with illustrations) on appropriate exercises for the minimally to moderately impaired. A helpful glossary is provided, as are several appendices, which offer important information on various caregiver associations, caregiver-specific Web sites, and numerous connected resources [cover].
