Book excerpt: This paper describes the potential of existing exhaust emission reduction technologies for diesel engines fuelled with biodiesel. We examined improvements in in-cylinder combustion technologies using common-rail, high-pressure injection equipment, after-treatment technology using diesel particulate filters:DPF and diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), and fuel treatment technology by the addition of a cetane improver. An additive, 2-ethyl-hexyl-nitrate:EHN, was tested using both neat biodiesel fuel and a 20% biodiesel/low-sulfur gasoil blend:B20 using a DI diesel engine with a common-rail injection system. The EHN was effective for reducing soluble organic fraction:SOF in particulate matter:PM at low engine loads for neat biodiesel fuel. EHN addition reduced NOx for both B20 and gasoil. Engine bench tests and vehicle road tests were conducted using a passive DPF system without a catalyst or electric heater for filter regeneration. For gasoil, regeneration of the DPF was required at approximately 300 km. However, regeneration of the DPF was not necessary when using biodiesel fuel. The DPF is effective for reducing both soot particles and SOF in PM at high and low engine loads. Self-regeneration of the DPF occurs when engine loads change from low to high and when potassium hydroxide catalysts are incorporated into the biodiesel production process; transesterification and refining process. We found that a diesel oxidation catalysts:DOC is effective at reducing SOF, unburned hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes in exhaust emission. In addition, we devised a strategy for emission control using existing technologies. First, NOx emissions could be reduced by retarding the timing of injection such that it was the same as that of gasoil. This control of timing is particularly important given that the ignitability of biodiesel greater than that of gasoil. SOF in PM will be reduced by DPF, DOC and cetane improver at low engine loads. In general, soot emission associated with biodiesel is less than that of gasoil because biodiesel is oxygenated and free of aromatic hydrocarbon diesel fuel. Furthermore, soot emission can be suppressed by high-pressure injection and DPF, while the gaseous exhaust emissions, CO, HC, and aldehydes, will be reduced by DOC. Finally, the combination of conventional emission control technologies, DPF, DOC, fuel additives, will necessitate high-pressure injection in order to meet the stringent diesel engine emission targets for biodiesel-fuelled diesel engines by 2010.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biodiesel / petroleum fuel blend and practical low-cost methods of emission control were sought to obtain reductions in emissions from diesel generators. Little direct testing of biodiesel in diesel-powered electric generators has been done. Laboratory and field evaluations were conducted to determine the influence of using biodiesel on diesel exhaust emissions. B20 (20% biodiesel / 80% petroleum diesel) was chosen because of previously successful studies with this blend level, and there is evidence that the NOx emissions increase that result from using B20 can be controlled using existing technology. B85 was selected because it is a "high blend," which promised to give a large decrease in PM at the expense of a larger increase in NOx than B20, but still within the range of control with existing technology. Change-air cooling and a fuel additive were tested as NOx controls. For PM, CO, and HC reduction, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) was evaluated. The laboratory tests were conducted on a Cummins ISM heavy-duty engine. Field tests were conducted on a Caterpiller model 3406 B, turbocharged and aftercooled engine. A B20 fuel blend with additional charge air-cooling was evaluated at the field demonstration site. A supplemental cooling circuit was designed and installed to enable a 40°C reduction in the temperature of the intake air charge to the engine. A comparison of the NOx, CO, and Total Particulate Matter emissions for D2 at 90°C charge air temperature and B20 at 50°C charge air temperature is a realistic scenario. Average NOx emissions are reduced 15-18 percent, CO is reduced 35-37 percent, and TPM was reduced significantly. The successful field tests demonstrated that a renewable fuel, such as B20, can be effectively used in gensets to achieve significant reductions in NOx and PM when compared to emissions from petroleum D2 fuel that is normally used, with appropriate engine modifications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy-duty diesel engines are in conflict between the goals of emission reduction and optimization of fuel consumption. To fulfill future more stringent exhaust gas limits further developments on diesel engine technology are necessary. The diesel injection system assists this development and becomes the decisive factor to reach the emission targets. In the last 30 years a trend to high-pressure fuel injection systems with an increase of maximum injection pressure from 800 up to 2000 bar is visible. In future very flexible high-pressure fuel injection systems are necessary with multiple injection and rate-shaping capabilities and a maximum injection pressure beyond 2000 bar. Very important is a high efficiency of the fuel injection system itself to reach low fuel consumption. New product engineering like new nozzle design (k-factor, vario nozzle,..) or new developed actuators are key factors for the fuel injection development. With a flexible diesel injection system in each point of the engine map the optimum rate shaping, injection timing and multiple injection are possible to get the best compromise between emission trade off and fuel consumption. For example with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) a rectangular type main injection with high injection pressures at full load is recommended. On the other hand, without EGR in this point of the engine map a boot or ramp shape injection leads to the best emission results at constant or improved fuel consumption. With a coupled post injection the soot emission could be reduced. The late post injection is assisting the exhaust gas aftertreatment systems. The regeneration of the diesel particulate filter is for example because of too low exhaust gas temperature without the support of the injection system not under all circumstances possible. The exhaust gas temperature management by late post injection is a measure to improve the efficiency of catalyst systems at low exhaust gas temperatures. Very important in the future is the capability of the electronic control unit (ECU) of the diesel injection system to control air management, exhaust gas emission management, tolerance reduction, diagnosis, vehicle functions and combustion process by the fuel injection system.

Book excerpt: Heavy-duty diesel engines are in conflict between the goals of emission reduction and optimization of fuel consumption. On the basis of test results measured with common-rail-based development tools the potential of the FIE to support solving the emission/fuel-trade-off is described. Besides the question of pressure- or needle-life-controlled injection, the measure ""exhaust gas recirculation' (EGR) is also considered. The influence of high injection pressure, rate shaping of main injection and multiple injections on engine emissions are discussed. Furthermore the importance of advanced control strategies to achieve the best emission results in steady state and transient engine conditions are shown exemplary. Finally, scenarios and engine technology to meet future emission limits are pointed out.
