Book Synopsis Re-conceiving Property Rights in the New Millennium by : Ben Chigara
Download or read book Re-conceiving Property Rights in the New Millennium written by Ben Chigara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes volume two of a two volume examination of development community land issues in Southern Africa. Following from volume one Southern African Development Community Land Issues, this book considers the possibility of a new, sustainable land relations policy for Southern African Development Community States (SADC) that are currently mired up in land disputes that have become subject of domestic, regional and international tribunals. Chigara demonstrates that land relations in the SADC have always been, and will perhaps remain, a matter for constitutional regulation. Because constitutional laws are distinctive from other laws only by constitutional design, legal contests appear to be the least likely means for settlement in the sub-region. Only human rights inspired policies, that respond to the call for social justice by acknowledging both the current and the underlying contexts to the disputes, hold the most potential to resolve these disputes. The book recommends efficient pedagogical counter-apartheid-rule psychological distortions regarding the significance of human dignity (PECAPDISH) as a pre-requisite and corollary to the dismantling of the salient physical legacy of apartheid-rule in affected SADC States. The book shows that PECAPDISH’s potential and benefits would be enormous. The book will be of interest to students and researchers of Property and Conveyancing Law, Human Rights Law, and Land Law.

Book Synopsis Region-Building in Southern Africa by : Chris Saunders
Download or read book Region-Building in Southern Africa written by Chris Saunders and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How successful have Southern African states been in dealing with the major issues that have faced the region in recent years? What could be done to produce more cohesive and effective region-building in Southern Africa? In this original and wide-ranging volume, which draws on an interdisciplinary team of mainly African and African-based specialists, the key political, socio-economic, and security challenges facing Southern Africa today are addressed. These include the various issues confronting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its institutions; such as HIV/AIDS, migration and xenophobia, land-grabbing and climate change; and the role of the main external actors involved with the region, including the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and China. The book also looks at the Southern African Customs Union and Southern African Development Finance Institutions, including the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Industrial Development Corporation, and issues of gender and peacebuilding. In doing so, the book goes to the heart of analyzing the effectiveness of SADC and other regional organisation, suggesting how region-building in Southern Africa may be compared with similar attempts elsewhere in Africa and other parts of the world.

Book excerpt: This document details the activities that were undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and cooperating agencies (the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of South Africa (DAFF), the Africa Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC)) leading to the production of a Regional Aquatic Biosecurity Strategy for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its subsequent adoption by SADC and incorporation into SADC programmes. Included as annexes to the report are: Annex I. the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional aquatic animal health capacity and performance survey: Summary of survey results and analysis; Annex II. The Report of the FAO/DAFF/AU-IBAR/SADC Regional Workshop on Improving Aquatic Animal Health Management and Strengthening Biosecurity Governance in Africa; and Annex III. the Regional aquatic biosecurity strategy for the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The process was long but the most important is that it was done using a systematic approach that lead to good understanding leading to better consensus building, wide ownership and strong government commitment.

Book Synopsis Legal Mechanisms for Water Resources in the Third Millennium by : Marcella Nanni
Download or read book Legal Mechanisms for Water Resources in the Third Millennium written by Marcella Nanni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal mechanisms for the management, development and protection of water resources have evolved over the years and have reached unprecedented levels of complexity and sophistication. This phenomenon is largely in response to the global community’s sustainable development agenda, to the challenges and limitations imposed by climate variability, and to scientific and technological advances. Bringing together diverse experiences from across the world, this book analyses existing water law and governance solutions, their shortcomings, as well as developments and trends in the light of changing circumstances. The legal mechanisms examined range from international treaties, agreements and arrangements on cooperation over transboundary water resources, to the onset of novel issues arising out of technological advances, and from domestic regulation of water abstraction and groundwater management, to domestic regulation of the water industry. The articles in this book were originally published in the journal Water International, following the XIV and the XV World Water Congresses of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA), which were held in 2011 and in 2015, respectively. The chapters originally published in Water International.
