Download or read book Sacred Rage written by Robin Wright and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-12-04 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a generation, Muslim extremists have targeted Americans in an escalation of terror that culminated in the September 11 attacks. Our shared confusion -- Who are the attackers? Why are we targets? -- is cleared away in a book as dramatic as it is authoritative. Updated with new chapters on Afghanistan and the the broader Islamic movement, Sacred Rage combines Robin Wright's extraordinary reportage on the Islamic world with an historian's grasp of context to explain the roots, the motives, and the goals of the Islamic resurgence. Wright talked to terrorists, militant religious leaders, and fighters from Beirut to Islamabad and Kabul. Their voices of rage reverberate here -- right up to the attacks in New York and Washington. Across continents extends a challenge we fail to understand at our peril. Sacred Rage now casts light on the war being fought in the shadows.

Book excerpt: This volume of essays is devoted to a careful examination of the importance of methodology in the study of primary religious data. The essays focus on the 'Sacred' as an ultimate object of descriptive analysis and critical scrutiny on the part of a select number of North American and European methodologists in the study and teaching of the history of religions and its allied disciplines. The central question to which the contributors respond are these: What is the Sacred? Is it a being or a concept of a being; is it a mental state or an objective reality or something else entirely? Can the Sacred be described as an empirical fact, or as a formal rule for religious inquiry? If the Sacred is a valid category in the study and teaching of religion, then what can be said about the antithesis of the sacred, namely the profane or the secular? This volume probes these questions with great care in order to justify a number of ways the Sacred can be construed as an indispensable notion for the study and teaching of religion.

Book Synopsis The Works of Thomas Carlyle by : Thomas Carlyle
Download or read book The Works of Thomas Carlyle written by Thomas Carlyle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1898 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was one of the most influential authors of the nineteenth century. Eagerly studied at the highest level of intellectual society, his satirical essays and perceptive historical biographies caused him to be regarded for much of the Victorian period as a literary genius and eminent social philosopher. After graduating from Edinburgh University in 1814, he published his first scholarly work on German literature in 1824, before finding literary success with his history of the French Revolution in 1837. After falling from favour during the first part of the twentieth century, his work has more recently become the subject of scholarly re-examination. His introduction of German literature and philosophy into the British intellectual milieu profoundly influenced later philosophical ideas and literary studies. These volumes are reproduced from the 1896 Centenary Edition of his collected works. Volume 20 contains his controversial collection of essays, Latter-Day Pamphlets.

Book Synopsis Metaphors of ANGER across Languages: Universality and Variation by : Zoltan Kövecses
Download or read book Metaphors of ANGER across Languages: Universality and Variation written by Zoltan Kövecses and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-11-04 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anger is one of the basic emotions of human emotional experience, informing and guiding many of our choices and actions. Although it has received considerable scholarly attention in a number of disciplines, including linguistics, a basic question has still remained unresolved: why do variations in the folk model of anger exist across languages if it is indeed a basic emotion rooted in largely universal bodily experience? By drawing on a wide selection of comparable linguistic data from dozens of languages (including a number of less-researched languages), this volume provides the most comprehensive account of what is universal and what is variable in the folk model of anger – and why. It also investigates the role that metonymies might play in the emergence of anger-related metaphors and in what ways context influences or shapes anger metaphors and thereby the resulting folk model of anger. No such volume exists in the (cognitive) linguistic literature on anger – or on emotions for that matter. The book is thus an essential contribution to the study of anger and will serve as basic reading for any researcher interested in how the conceptualization of anger is constructed via the interplay of bodily experience, language and the larger cultural context.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the background of the revealed, diptych, ecumenical icon of the Divine Heart of God the Father Encompassing All Hearts is presented, together with the related Consecration (Seal) Prayer to the Almighty Father. The icon apologia and canon are elucidated. The ecumenical importance of the icon of the Divine Heart for the universal Church is addressed, together with the basis for the icon in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, as well as its meaning for our present times and eschatological future. The aims of the icon, history of God the Father in iconography, and pertinent Church Council decrees are explored. The history of the first icon of the Eternal Father in the Catholic Church is given, with evidence of the Divine Paternal Heart, including Scriptural evidence, and the history/revelations of this second icon of the Father in the Catholic Church. A summary theology of the Divine Heart icon is outlined, with relevance to the sacred liturgy, Catholic/Orthodox mysticism, the era of the eighth day and deification of man, the universal call to holiness, and the de-Christianization of our times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to the previous editions, in this 2018 edition of The Fair RaceÕs Darkest Hour, I have eliminated my introductory remarks to each chapter and also a dozen essays. Only the texts that have caused a considerable impact on my worldview have remained. The first two pieces, especially HamiltonÕs, explain the baffling phenomenon of Aryan ethnosuicide. However, I must say that I not only abridged HamiltonÕs piece for this collection but other essays as well. In this compilation, there are two fundamental texts. The first one, a book review by J.A. Sexton of Tom GoodrichÕs Hellstorm: The Death of Nazi Germany, 1944-1947, informs us about a Dantesque, heart-breaking Holocaust committed by the Allies on the Germans even after the war was over. The second is a translation from Spanish of an online book authored by a Catalonian blogger who uses the penname Evropa Soberana: Rome contra Judea; Judea contra Rome.
