Thus begins a period of distress for Sacred Bird as she struggles to live among the tribe who stole her and her daughter from their people. Forced to work tirelessly, Sacred Bird is subjected to abuse from the tribe, made worse by her lack of knowledge of their language. Her daughter, Sacred Feather Woman, is thankfully treated better and acts as Sacred Bird’s one tether between her happy old life and frightening new one. Sacred Feather Woman keeps her mother’s spirits up by being her inquisitive and kind self, becoming the only light that shines for Sacred Bird during these dark days. When Sacred Bird realizes a way to escape her captivity, she jumps at planning and preparing for the long trek back home. Mother and daughter begin their journey home to their family, gaining help and companions from a kind couple along the way. As the group works to leave the past behind, the journey home proves to be difficult, haunting, and tragic.

Book excerpt: "This unusual book looks at the quetzal from many points of view: as the ancient Aztec god Quetzalcoatl; as a source of valuable feathers throughout Mesoamerican history; as a rainforest bird of striking beauty and intriguing habits; and as an endangered animal today....The writing weaves the many strands of myth, lore, art, and natural history into a coherent narrative....Drawings add their own sense of wonder and mystery. Well researched and handsomely presented, this book offers a many-faceted study of the quetzal."--Booklist. Bibliography, index, maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the living spiritual tradition surrounding birds in Native American culture • Pairs scholarly research with more than 200 firsthand accounts of bird signs from traditional Native Americans and their descendants • Examines the legends, wisdom, and powers of the birds known as the gatekeepers of the four directions—Eagle, Hawk, Crow, and Owl • Provides many examples of bird sign interpretations and human-bird communication that can be applied in your own encounters with birds Birds are our strongest allies in the natural world. Revered in Native American spirituality and shamanic traditions around the world, birds are known as teachers, guardians, role models, counselors, healers, clowns, peacemakers, and meteorologists. They carry messages and warnings from loved ones and the spirit world, report deaths and injuries, and channel divine intelligence to answer our questions. Some of their “signs” are so subtle that one could discount them as subjective, but others are dramatic enough to strain even a skeptic’s definition of coincidence. Pairing scholarly research with more than 200 firsthand accounts of bird encounters from traditional Native Americans and their descendants, Evan Pritchard explores the living spiritual tradition surrounding birds in Native American culture. He examines in depth the birds known as the gatekeepers of the four directions--Eagle in the North, Hawk in the East, Crow in the South, and Owl in the West--including their roles in legends and the use of their feathers in shamanic rituals. He reveals how the eagle can be a direct messenger of the Creator, why crows gather in “Crow Councils,” and how shamans have the ability to travel inside of birds, even after death. Expanding his study to the wisdom and gifts of birds beyond the four gatekeepers, such as hummingbirds, seagulls, and the mythical thunderbird, he provides numerous examples of everyday bird sign interpretations that can be applied in your own encounters with birds as well as ways we can help protect birds and encourage them to communicate with us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All the seashore is lined with numbers of stone idols, with their backs turned towards the sea, which caused us no little wonder, because we saw no tool of any kind for working these figures." So wrote, a century and a half ago, one of the earliest navigators to visit the Island of Easter in the South-east Pacific. Ever since that day passing ships have found it incomprehensible that a few hundred natives should have been able to make, move, and erect numbers of great stone monuments, some of which are over thirty feet in height; they have marvelled and passed on. As the world's traffic has increased Easter Island has still stood outside its routes, quiet and remote, with its story undeciphered. What were these statues of which the present inhabitants know nothing?... Whence came the people who reached this remote spot? Did they arrive from South America, 2,000 miles to the eastward? Or did they sail against the prevailing wind from the distant islands to the west?...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Maori Symbolism’ is a story of a great race as told in their own Sacred Legends. And it is even more than this. It is an accurate record of the inner meaning of Life Symbolism on which the civilization of the Dark-Whites all over the world is founded. That symbolism stands for Cultivation – of the race, of the body and of the land. The numerous illustrations are to be regarded as documents supporting the evidence reported in the text. Some of this is of startling interest, as for insurance that concerning the casting of ancient statues and megaliths from molten lava. The Sacred Legends concerning the origin and migration of the New Zealand Maori are reported at some length, and the evidence given throws fresh light on the important ‘Diffusion’ controversy. Maori land cultivation is shown to have been far in advance of European. Maori cultivation of the body, expressed in native dances, is demonstrated to be an ordered system of physical education, designed to improve and preserve the fittest. Maori race culture is exhibited as based on a lofty code of social and sexual ethics. Maori religion and philosophy, as expressed in symbolic decoration and writing, are for the first time truthfully explained and interpreted.

Book excerpt: Living Earth Community: Multiple Ways of Being and Knowing is a celebration of the diversity of ways in which humans can relate to the world around them, and an invitation to its readers to partake in planetary coexistence. Innovative, informative, and highly accessible, this interdisciplinary anthology of essays brings together scholars, writers and educators across the sciences and humanities, in a collaborative effort to illuminate the different ways of being in the world and the different kinds of knowledge they entail – from the ecological knowledge of Indigenous communities, to the scientific knowledge of a biologist and the embodied knowledge communicated through storytelling. This anthology examines the interplay between Nature and Culture in the setting of our current age of ecological crisis, stressing the importance of addressing these ecological crises occurring around the planet through multiple perspectives. These perspectives are exemplified through diverse case studies – from the political and ethical implications of thinking with forests, to the capacity of storytelling to motivate action, to the worldview of the Indigenous Okanagan community in British Columbia. Living Earth Community: Multiple Ways of Being and Knowing synthesizes insights from across a range of academic fields, and highlights the potential for synergy between disciplinary approaches and inquiries. This anthology is essential reading not only for researchers and students, but for anyone interested in the ways in which humans interact with the community of life on Earth, especially during this current period of environmental emergency.
