Book Synopsis The Foundation of the Catholic Mission in Hong Kong, 1841-1894 by : Ha Keloon Louis

This book was released on 2018-06-02 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church is one of the few institutions that have survived since the inception of the British colony. She has contributed much during its development. As early as 1841, she set up a mission in Hong Kong. She and her various religious orders and congregations engaged in charitable works for the poor and the elderly in the early days of Hong Kong, greatly relieving the burden on the newly established colonial government. Today, apart from religious services, the Catholic Church still plays an important role in providing Hong Kong with diversified and professional services in medical care, education and social welfare. Historical studies on the Catholic Church in Hong Kong of a comprehensive nature are rare in comparison with other religions. The reasons of this may include the complicated organizational structure of the Catholic Church and the multiple languages used in the archival documents, such as Latin, French, Italian and Portuguese. As a Catholic clergy, the author of this book, Fr Louis Ha, is knowledgeable about the internal operation of the Church. He is also familiar with many European languages which help him master the original records and guarantee the credible result of his research. The contents of this book are based on the large number of documents provided by the Hong Kong Diocesan Archives Office, by archives in the Vatican and in various religious orders in Europe. As an objective and impartial historian, Fr. Louis Ha honestly pointed out the power struggle in the Church, the confrontation with the government, the competition between Chinese and foreign clerics. In fact, a candid description of the Catholic Church in Hong Kong is shown in front of the readers. Definitely, it is a precious reference book for the study of the local society, religion, education, and charitable work in early Hong Kong.

Book Synopsis Historical Trajectories of Catholicism in Africa by : Valentine Ugochukwu Iheanacho
Download or read book Historical Trajectories of Catholicism in Africa written by Valentine Ugochukwu Iheanacho and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book masterfully knits together the various curves and routes traveled so far by the Catholic Church in Africa. From an African perspective, the book presents a general trajectory of Catholicism on the continent by highlighting some significant events and moments in the evolution of the Catholic Church in Africa. It equally profiles the Vatican’s policy of indigenization as realized on the continent through the Africanization of the local episcopate. That policy prepared the way for the emergence of the local churches in Africa on the heels of the post-missionary phase that terminated with the convocation of the First African Synod of Bishops in 1994. Beyond the vicissitudes of the relatively recent past, the book boldly indicates the likely future shape and direction of African Catholicism. It contends that the future shape of the church in Africa may not be determined by a belabored inculturation, but instead by how the local churches concern themselves with concrete realities such as poverty, lack of opportunities, and ecological issues. It envisages a church that may not shy away from asserting itself within the mainstream ecclesiastical politics of global Catholicism where it must “connect, compete and collaborate.”

Download or read book Secularization in Igboland written by Charles Chikezie Agu and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1989 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secularization is often presumed to be a phenomenon that is exclusive to the industrialized and technologically advanced countries. After a comprehensive survey of how secularization is understood and evaluated in various fields of knowledge, this study demonstrates that it has since become a feature of Igbo society. While colonialism and missionary activity initiated it, cultural, social, and ideological influences from Europe and North America now foster it. Generally, secularization challenges the Church and Christians to bear qualitative and culturally relevant witness to the gospel. In the Igbo context, this challenge includes the urgent necessity of incarnating the gospel into the people's culture.

Book Synopsis The Catholic Church and Apartheid by : Garth Abraham
Download or read book The Catholic Church and Apartheid written by Garth Abraham and published by Raven Press (South Africa). This book was released on 1989 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals that in the years immediately after the National Party's victory in 1948, the Catholic Church adopted an essential conciliatory approach. This was an attempt to mollify the secular power, which openly espoused the Roomse-gevaar mentality of the Dutch Reformed Churches. Examines the crucial decade after 1948, during which the Church moved from appeasement to resistance, and analyzes the motivations and forces which finally drove the Church to make the choice it did--a choice which has served to define and determine its future development in South Africa.
