Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you one of those e4-players who absolutely hate to face the French Defence? And when it occurs, do you get the feeling that black has all the fun, whether he's pressuring your d-pawn, breaking down your pawn centre, rounding up your a-pawn or boring you to tears with the Rubinstein? - Then the Reti Gambit may be the solution for you too After having written two popular books on the King's Gambit for white (The King's Gambit for the Creative Aggressor in 1998 and The Fascinating King's Gambit in 2004/5) Thomas Johansson devotes his third chess opening book to a little known gambit that definitely spices up the French Defence I can't guarantee that white always gets an advantage in the RG - after all, even the theoretical main lines after 2.d4 tend to end up equal after about 20 moves - but the positions that arise are usually so interesting and fun that once you've learned how to play it, I think you will soon be looking forward to your next encounter with the French Defence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sicilian is far and away the most popular chess opening, and many players prefer to side-step the Open Sicilian with one of the Anti-Sicilian systems at White's disposal. This book equips Black to fight against all these lines. The Anti-Sicilian systems include: positionally motivated lines such as the 2 c3 Sicilian and the 3 Bb5 systems; slow but tricky attacking lines including the Closed Sicilian and the King's Indian Attack; aggressive but loosening ideas like the Grand Prix Attack and a variety of gambits. In the most critical variations, Rogozenko provides a choice between a solid and an aggressive option. He caters for those who meet 2 Nf3 with the three main moves, 2...d6, 2...e6 and 2...Nc6.

This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queenside Fianchetto Factor In the first full book to examine 2.b3 against the Sicilian, French and Caro-Kann, mainlines, interesting sidelines and current theory are reviewed. In addition, what actually happens in modern practice is surveyed. The authors are optimistic for White, and concentrate on the best continuations while trying to be objective. It is in that spirit that they conclude that 2.b3 is sound against the Sicilian, fun against the French, and curious against the Caro-Kann. In all three cases, the objective is to sabotage Black’s play, to take him out of his comfort zone. The word “sabotage” has historically derived from throwing a clog into machinery, or in other words, throwing a monkey wrench in the works; here the wrench is a queenside fianchetto. White aims his light-square bishop toward the right flank; he typically delays Ng1-f3 so that he may play Qd1-f3 or advance his f-pawn, and use his light-square bishop to build a full-scale kingside attack. Queenside castling often occurs, hoping for a kingside pawn storm. Yet, despite all these characteristics of 2.b3, White may still retains the option of d2-d4 for a more conventional-looking 1.e4 opening. With 2.b3, you will have one more arrow in your theoretical quiver to battle Black. And, like it or not, Black will be compelled to do deal with the queenside fianchetto factor.

Using examples from modern play, he examines tactical and positional ideas for both White and Black, and pays special attention to tricky move orders which are very much in the armoury of contemporary Grandmasters.

Book excerpt: In the third and final volume of his series on the French Defence, Steffen Pedersen covers all of White's alternatives to 3 Nc3 and 3 Nd2. These include the aggressive Advance, the quiet Exchange, and side-variations such as the Two Knights, King's Indian Attack and the Wing Gambit. In these lines, it is White who determines the central structure and sets the pace of the game. With the Advance Variation, White establishes a space advantage, and will often seek to exploit this by creating attacking chances on the kingside, or a bind on the queenside. Both sides have a variety of systems at their disposal, and the player who is better acquainted with the intricacies of these lines will tend to come out on top. It is a perennial favourite among players with a direct aggressive style: Shirov has played the Advance many times in recent years, while it has been employed by Sveshnikov and Kupreichik throughout their careers. The Exchange Variation leads to open and generally symmetrical positions. Pedersen carefully examines White's attempts to seize the initiative, and also recommends ways for Black to create play if White adopts a more stolid approach.

Whether it be with the crude but dangerous Grand Prix Attack, one of a number of crazy gambits, or a sleep-inducing line such as 3 Bb5 or 2 c3, White's aim is to stop Black reaching his favourite line of the exciting Open Sicilian. So what should Black do? This book provides the answers to this, and many other questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Najdorf Sicilian is one of Black’s most respected and popular responses to 1 e4. It was favoured by those two titans of the game, Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov and in the modern game it features in the repertoire of many elite players. This rich opening creates a wealth of opportunities for vigorous attacks, causing most games to be tense and engaging. The Najdorf is that very rare thing – an opening for Black that is highly aggressive but is also recognised as being objectively sound. In this book, FIDE Master John Doknjas and National Master Joshua Doknjas navigate through the main lines of the Najdorf and provide the reader with well-researched, fresh, and innovative analysis. Each annotated game has valuable lessons on how to play the opening, and contains instructive commentary on typical middle-game plans. With thorough variations and explanations on pawn structures and piece placement, this book provides insight to both strong masters and less experienced players alike. The format is ideal for the chessplayer keen to improve their game. While reading you are continually challenged to answer probing questions – a method that greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of chess knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to study chess while providing the best possible chance to retain what has been learnt.

But that is not all! A complete in depth repertoire against black's different ways of declining white's pawn offer is also provided. A great service for those who may want to take up this opening with the white pieces! The author laboured with the analytical work for nearly two years, aiming to create one of the best theoretical guides to the King's Gambit ever written. - But if he fulfilled this ambition can of course, only be determined by the reader! What can not be denied is that Johansson shares a multitude of theoretical novelties and insights with his readers. Basically offering them access to an almost unexplored world which until now has been reserved for a relatively small crowd of strong King's Gambiteers. From the author of The King's Gambit for the Creative Aggressor! Instead of going on and on about the content of this book, let me just quote a very famous King's Gambiteer, grandmaster David Bronstein. 'You want to play the King's Gambit? Well, Black can draw after 3.Nf3. Play 3.Bc4 if you want to win!' Visit the author's website at: http://hem.passagen.se/tjmisha/countdown.html

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sveshnikov Variation of the Sicilian Defence provides a battleground for one of the key conflicts in chess: structure versus activity. Black voluntarily accepts a weak pawn formation but in return obtains easy development and excellent piece activity. This is a line that finds favour with aggressive, attacking players who are confident in their tactical ability. The idea of playing ...e5 in the Sicilian is an old one but the modern Sveshnikov treatment was developed in the 1970s, since when it has featured in the repertoires of numerous elite players. It is currently experiencing great popularity due to the fact that it was Magnus Carlsen’s choice in his World Championship Match against Fabiano Caruana in London 2018. Carlsen’s success with the line was a significant factor in his eventual victory in the match. Since then he has continued to use the Sveshnikov with great success. In Opening Repertoire: The Sveshnikov leading chess author Cyrus Lakdawala guides the reader through the complexities of this dynamic variation and carves out a repertoire for Black. He examines all aspects of this highly complex opening and provides the reader with well-researched, fresh, and innovative analysis. Each annotated game has valuable lessons on how to play the opening and contains instructive commentary on typical middlegame plans. * A complete repertoire for Black in the Sicilian Sveshnikov. * A question and answer approach provides an excellent study method.
