Book Synopsis The Idea of New India by : Pramod Kumar
Download or read book The Idea of New India written by Pramod Kumar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of ‘New India’ has acquired a new currency. The dominant grammar of politics dilutes the critical impulse and deters the expression of alternate politics. The interpretive possibilities have been replaced by a reactive exchange. Technology is presented as a panacea, rather than just a facilitator. Legitimacy and normative dignity for these ideas is acquired by redefining the role of the institutions and also through constitutional amendments. A major intellectual effort is required to reformulate public policy, governance systems and social relations to balance the opposite claims of market efficiency and economic growth with social equity and justice. This book is co-published with Aakar Books, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the print versions of this book in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Book Synopsis Understanding Contemporary Indian Federalism by : Chanchal Kumar Sharma
Download or read book Understanding Contemporary Indian Federalism written by Chanchal Kumar Sharma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes centre-state dynamics in India placed against the backdrop of the election of a Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata (BJP) government to central power in 2014. It reflects on how centre-state relations have been shaped by the legacy of nearly two decades of broad-based coalition government at the centre and the concurrent and ongoing liberalization of the Indian economy. To this purpose, the volume engages with several relevant questions linked to the political economy of Indian federalism and its ability to manage ethno-linguistic difference. Did liberalization strengthen the economic or political autonomy of the Indian states? What impact did party system change have on the capacity of parties in central government to influence the actions of state governments? How did party system change and liberalization influence the fiscal and financial autonomy of the states and the capacity of the centre in planning and social development? Did both processes strengthen the autonomy of Chief Ministers in foreign policy-making? What are the strengths and weaknesses of Indian federalism in ethno-linguistic conflict management and what do the recent split of Andhra Pradesh or the proposed formation of Bodoland tell us about the dynamics underpinning the management of ethno-linguistic difference in contemporary India? The chapters originally published as a special issue of India Review.
Book Synopsis Modi and the Reinvention of Indian Foreign Policy by : Hall, Ian
Download or read book Modi and the Reinvention of Indian Foreign Policy written by Hall, Ian and published by Bristol University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narendra Modi’s energetic personal diplomacy and promise to make India a ‘leading power’ surprised many analysts. Most had predicted that his government would concentrate on domestic issues, on the growth and development demanded by Indian voters, and that he lacked necessary experience in international relations. Instead, Modi’s first term saw a concerted attempt to reinvent Indian foreign policy by replacing inherited understandings of its place in the world with one drawn largely from Hindu nationalist ideology. Following Modi’s re-election in 2019, this book explores the drivers of this reinvention, arguing it arose from a combination of elite conviction and electoral calculation, and the impact it has had on India’s international relations.
Book Synopsis India. The Modi Factor by : Ugo Tramballi
Download or read book India. The Modi Factor written by Ugo Tramballi and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Narendra Modi was elected Prime Minister of India in 2014, he promised to push through key reforms and bring about the massive economic development needed for the "world's largest democracy" to win its place among global superpowers. With over 1.3 billion citizens, India is soon to become the world's most populous country, and more than one quarter of the people joining global workforce during the next decade will be Indian. The poorest of the world's 20 largest economies, India's potential for catch-up growth is enormous. And so are the limits and contradictions India must overcome for Modi's vision to gain momentum. What has his government achieved so far? How likely is Modi's "Minimum government, maximum governance" strategy to deliver the expected outcomes? Is India, often described as a "reluctant superpower", now closer to becoming a regional leader? In a crucial year for local elections, and with the Prime Minister ready to run for a second term in 2019, this volume investigates the economic, political and diplomatic trajectories of Modi's India in its quest for a global role.

Book Synopsis A narrowing space: Violence and discrimination against India's religious minorities by :
Download or read book A narrowing space: Violence and discrimination against India's religious minorities written by and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious minorities have long been the target of a range of different forms of persecution, such as hate crimes, threats, attacks on places of worship, and forced conversion. Nevertheless, in recent years there has been rising hostility against India’s religious minorities, particularly since the current right-wing BJP government promoting Hindu nationalism took power at the national level after its election in May 2014. In particular, communal violence disproportionately affects India’s religious minorities – especially Muslims, but also Christians and Sikhs. While often instrumentalized for political gains, communal violence draws on and exacerbates a climate of entrenched discrimination against India’s religious minorities, with far-reaching social, economic, cultural and political dimensions. Such violence is frequently met with impunity and in certain instances direct complicity from state actors, ranging from inciting violence through hate speech to refusing to properly investigate communal incidents after they have occurred. The aim of this short briefing is to contextualise these recent developments, drawing attention to the ways communal violence is linked to wider discrimination against religious minorities, and infringes upon their enjoyment of minority rights.

It saw the decimation of the ruling Congress party, a spectacular victory for the BJP and a new style of campaigning that broke every rule in the political game. But how and why? In his riveting book, Rajdeep Sardesai tracks the story of this pivotal election through all the key players and the big news stories. Beginning with 2012, when Narendra Modi won the state elections in Gujarat for a third time but set his sights on a bigger prize, to the scandals that crippled Manmohan Singh and UPA-II, and moving to the back-room strategies of Team Modi, the extraordinary missteps of Rahul Gandhi and the political dramas of election year, he draws a panoramic picture of the year that changed India.
Download or read book Changing India written by Manmohan Singh and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 3224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This set of five volumes documents the life and work of Manmohan Singh, an academic, a policymaker, and a politician who has had a deep impact on India and its economy. The volumes offer his selected speeches, articles, and interviews, starting from the 1950s, when he was in the academia, through the 1980s and 1990s, when he was India's finance minister, to 2004-14, when he was the prime minister of India. Manmohan Singh's writings reflect on the reforms that transformed the Indian economy and lay the foundations for a stronger medium-term growth story than the kind that India had witnessed in the preceding 44 years since Independence. The five volumes bring together Singh's essays and speeches on various subjects- economic reforms, India's export trends and the prospects for self-sustained growth, trade and development, and international economic order and equity in development.
