Download or read book Love Poems written by Dante Alighieri and published by Alma Books. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante is known to most readers outside Italy for his gritty descriptions of the Inferno, but there is another, gentler side to his poetry, which found expression throughout his career in verses that made him, together with his friend Guido Cavalcanti, the leading love poet of his generation. From the ballads and rime of his youth to the heart-rending lyrics written on the death of Beatrice and the more sober, philosophical canzoni of his later years, this volume provides the only English edition of the great Florentine's complete love poems, in brilliant verse translations by Dante specialists J.G. Nichols and Anthony Mortimer.
Download or read book The Fasti (Verse) written by Ovid and published by Digireads.Com. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Fasti" was believed to have been left incomplete when Ovid was exiled to Tomis by the emperor Augustus in 8 AD. The work, which is structured based on the Roman calendar, is a series of elegiac couplets which present the first-hand accounts of vates, or "poet-prophets" with Roman deities regarding the origin of various Roman holidays and associated customs. The first six months of the year are all that is included in the work and it is unclear whether this was the intention of Ovid, whether the work is incomplete, or if the books on the last six months are simply lost. The book is dedicated to Germanicus, great-nephew of the Emperor Augustus, and it's speculated that "The Fasti" was written with the intention of restoring Ovid's standing with the rulers of Rome and to secure his release from exile. Presented here in this edition is the verse translation by John Benson Rose.

Book Synopsis Italian Altarpieces 1250-1550 by : Eve Borsook
Download or read book Italian Altarpieces 1250-1550 written by Eve Borsook and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, the Italian altarpiece has attracted unprecedented scholarly attention, bringing artistic, liturgical, social and technical considerations to bear on the subject. The eight contributors to this book provide an impressive synopsis of the different approaches developed in order to enlarge and deepen our knowledge of paintings in terms of their historical functions. Patronage, morphology, religious meaning, pictorial composition, reception, and original setting are all discussed. In several cases, new light is shed on paintings that until a few years ago were dealt with only as elements within a history of style. In nearly all the contributions there is an overwhelming concern with reconstruction, and much new material is presented concerning the historical significance of a specific category of painting. This volume is the result of an international symposium held in June 1988 at the Harvard University for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti in Florence.

Book Synopsis Historiae Mundi by : Bloomsbury Publishing
Download or read book Historiae Mundi written by Bloomsbury Publishing and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Universal History" is a type of history that attempts to explain the world beyond the immediate surroundings of the author. It reflects a desire to synthesise the mass of written and oral knowledge about the past and to introduce a systematic interpretation. The purpose of this collection is to re-examine the notion of Universal Historiography with a focus on its appearance in the Greek and Roman world and on the legacy that ancient authors offered to later generations. Fifteen new essays by a diverse set of international scholars tackle questions of definition, and illustrate the diversity of its forms, structures, themes and analyses. The collection explores the historical and intellectual contexts which gave rise to universalist thought, and its reputation and reception in antiquity and beyond. This book will appeal to those interested in Graeco-Roman historiography, and those with an interest in the Arabic, Early Christian and modern reception of ancient historiography.
