Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snakes are superbly secretive reptiles, celebrated by many for their highly tuned senses and their complex and mysterious seasonal behaviours. Though some people may be fearful of them, these important reptiles play a crucial role in many habitats. And an encounter with any one of our native snake species is an experience worth cherishing. In Spotlight Snakes, Jules Howard takes readers on a journey through the ecology and lifestyle of Britain's three native snake species: the Barred Grass Snake, the Smooth Snake and our only venomous snake species, the Adder. As well as uncovering their unique hunting styles and courtship rituals, he delves into the myths and legends at the heart of humankind's widespread and sometimes troublesome fascination with these animals. He also charts the conservation challenges our native snakes face in the modern age and explores the solutions conservationists are employing to help these extraordinary predators remain a vital part of British ecosystems for generations to come. The Spotlight series introduces readers to the lives and behaviour of our favourite animals with eye-catching colour photographs and informative expert text.

Book excerpt: A coming-of-age story set in the isolated, murky swamps of Louisiana When the mighty wind blows through the swamps of southern Louisiana, it changes not only the land, but the inhabitants as well. Just such a wind brought a lone infant into the care of the Chitimacha Indians deep in the Atchafalaya swamp. Raised by the tribal holy man, Storm Rider grows to adolescence as a respected tribal member, steeped in the wisdom and traditions of his adopted people. Their clan competitions, life-cycle rituals, social interactions, and subsistence labors are well explained in this historical novel. When captured by an enemy raiding party, Storm Rider and his nemesis, the village bully, forge a bond that delivers them from danger and charts their futures. Love, hate, friendship, and loyalty ride the dark bayou waters and converge at the sacred Rain Tree. Swamps, hurricanes, cannibals, and unforgettable characters are interwoven as tightly as one of old Cane Basket's watertight baskets in this anthropologically accurate story of American Indian cultures in conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Snakes in Question has been completely updated to take into account the most recent research available, offering useful scientific information about snakes while dispelling many widely-circulated myths and common fears. Accompanied by 100 stunning color photographs and written in the popular question-and-answer format of Smithsonian's “In Question” series, the book tells how snakes breathe, hear, smell, and much more. It covers not only the life cycle of snakes but also explores such phenomena as the rattlesnake's rattle, the viper's hiss, and the snake charmer's secrets. It addresses common folktales about snakes (do snakes milk cows?) and describes giant snakes, both real and imaginary. The authors also give expert advice on such subjects as distinguishing venomous species from harmless look-alikes and keeping snakes as pets.

Her two best friends, Trent and Arryn, are textbook examples of intelligent, handsome, and popular college boys. Life for Lark was just what you’d expect—but it turned out to be nothing she could have ever imagined. When an unexpected event turns her life upside down, nothing even her vivid imagination could have devised happens. Her old life is whisked away, and her new life as Sanity Shadowhouse begins. Now, she is the master of a group of preternatural beings, consisting of vampires, lycans, pixies, and other creatures of immense power. She soon discovers that not only was her picture-perfect life too good to be true, it was also actually a complicated ruse, carefully constructed to keep her hidden from her family’s ancient enemies. Once Sanity is introduced to a world of magick and unusual creatures she once dreamed about, she learns that she has abilities people would die—or kill—for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays presents a synthesis of current research on the Oxus Civilization, which rose and developed at the turn of the 3rd to 2nd millennia BC in Central Asia. First discovered in the 1970s, the Oxus Civilization, or the Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC), has engendered many different interpretations, which are explored in this volume by an international group of archaeologists and researchers. Contributors cover all aspects of this fascinating Bronze Age culture: architecture; material culture; grave goods; religion; migrations; and trade and interactions with neighboring civilizations, from Mesopotamia to the Indus, and the Gulf to the northern steppes. Chapters also examine the Oxus Civilization’s roots in previous local cultures, explore its environmental and chronological context, or the possibly coveted metal sources, and look into the reasons for its decline. The World of the Oxus Civilization offers a broad and fascinating examination of this society, and provides an invaluable updated resource for anyone working on the culture, history, and archaeology of this region and on the multiple interactions at work at that time in the ancient Near East.

Book excerpt: This is a pseudoplay (the kind meant to be read, not seen on stage or screen) about the nature of Evil. The play begins with the real-live crucifixion of the main protagonist on Mount Zion in present-day Jerusalem and continues with five flashbacks in five Acts, examining Evil by means of the thoughts, actions and personality clashes of the various characters. The plot intensifies throughout the Acts, first with a crescendo at the end of Act One, then with another at the end of Act Three, and then with a final crescendo at the end of Act Five. The climax leads directly to the crucifixion scene in the Prologue. Finally, a resolution of the main problem is provided in the Epilogue, and it is shown how Evil may be harnessed and made to serve Good. The play thus ends on a note of hope and cautious optimism but without underestimating the power of Evil. It was written in December 1986, completed in March, 1987, and published for the first time in August, 2007, for the second in January, 2018.
