Book excerpt: This thesis describes efforts to develop new pre-catalysts for the hydrogenation of challenging carbonyl substrates, including esters and amides. We seek to understand the mechanisms by which these catalysts operate, and to use this understanding to rationally design new pre-catalysts, as well as to identify complexes that can operate in a multi-catalyst cascade for the stepwise hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. Chapter One outlines the motivations for this work. The history and development of ester and amide hydrogenation pre-catalysts is discussed, as well as the rationale and precedent for using catalytic cascades to synthesize methanol from CO2. Chapter Two explores the hydrogenation of lactone substrates by a bipyridine-supported half-sandwich iridium complex. This is a rare example of an ester hydrogenation pre-catalyst that is tolerant to the addition of acid. Chapter Three describes computational studies into the mechanism of ester and amide hydrogenation by aliphatic pincer-supported complexes of iron and ruthenium. Subtle disparities in the hydrogenation mechanism between ester and acid model substrates highlight the influence of substrate identity on reactivity. We find that, surprisingly, the highest calculated barrier in amide hydrogenation involves the rupture of the hemiaminal intermediate, rather than initial hydrogenation of the carbonyl group. Chapter Four describes the hydrogenation of simple formate substrates by PCP- and POCOP-supported complexes of iridium. The crucial roles of acid additives in pre-catalyst activation and catalyst deactivation pathways are explored. These efforts showcase the limitations of ionic ester hydrogenations and illustrate how understanding the reactivity of metal complexes enables rational pre-catalyst selection and design. Finally, in Chapter Five, these iridium pre-catalysts are successfully incorporated into cascade systems for the conversion of CO2 to methanol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruthenium Oxidation Complexes explores ruthenium complexes, particularly those in higher oxidation states, which function as useful and selective organic oxidation catalysts. Particular emphasis is placed on those systems which are of industrial significance. The preparation, properties and applications of the ruthenium complexes are described, followed by a presentation of their oxidative properties and summary of the different mechanisms involved in the organic oxidations (e.g. oxidations of alcohols, alkenes, arenes and alkynes, alkanes, amines, ethers, phopshines and miscellaneous substrates). Moreover, future trends and developments in the area are discussed. This monograph is aimed at inorganic, organic, industrial and catalysis chemists, especially those who wish to carry out specific organic oxidations using catalytic methods.

Book excerpt: In this doctoral thesis, the catalytic activities of new ruthenium and iridium complexes have been examined in three major topics. New chiral phosphine-containing acidic bifunctional ligands and correspondingmetalcomplexes have been prepared. (S)-Sulfo-binepine was shown to be a very efficient novel ligand for ruthenium-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of aryl ketones and iridium-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of arylketimines. Based on mechanistic studies, outer-sphere mechanism was proposed for ketone hydrogenation. For ketimine hydrogenation, the key intermediate and resting species have been obtained, allowing the proposal of two competitive reaction pathways to explain the effects on enantioselectivity. N- and([alpha],[beta])-C-functionalization of cyclic amines have been achieved via borrowing hydrogen processes assisted by ruthenium and iridium phosphinesulfonate catalysts.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New supported ruthenium caytalysts have been prepared a) by diffusing Ru(CO)5 into the pores of faujasitic zeolites, and b) by sorbing ruthenium carbonyl cluster compounds onto oxide supports. After thermal activation, the supported ruthenium systemes catalyse the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide to mixtures of paraffins and olefins, but the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide hydrogenation results in typical Anderson-Schulz-Flory (A-S-F) product distributions, ie. low in C2 and C3 hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide hydrogention gives a product distribution which is not depleted in C2 and C3 hydrocarbons. Possible reasons for the fundamentally different product distributions obtained for the two carbon oxides will be discussed. Use of promoters and variation of conditions to optimize olefin content and to induce shape selectivity will also be discussed.
