Book excerpt: Discusses the project at hand, as a part of a technology package for biodiesel, aimed at catalytically converting the crude glycerol into value added chemicals that can be sold as raw materials or intermediates to other chemical industries, thereby significantly improving the profitability of the overall process and thus recouping some of the capital used in the biodiesel production. The main objectives of the project were: 1. To propose suitable heterogeneous catalyst which would transform the glycerol obtained from a biodiesel production system to value-added products mainly 1,2 Propane diol. 2. For this purpose ruthenium catalysts supported on zirconium oxide, aluminium oxide and silicon oxide were synthesized and tested in the conversion of glycerol. This was followed by evaluating the catalyst with the most promising catalytic properties amongst those tested. 3. To determine the optimum operating (temperature, pressure and catalysts weight) parameters of the best catalyst based on the conversion yield and the quality of the products.

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Book excerpt: In the last decades, inedible lignocellulosic biomasses have attracted significant attention for being abundant resources that are not in competition with agricultural land or food production and, therefore, can be used as starting renewable material for the production of a wide variety of platform chemicals. The three main components of lignocellulosic biomasses are cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, complex biopolymers that can be converted into a pool of platform molecules including sugars, polyols, alchols, ketons, ethers, acids and aromatics. Various technologies have been explored for their one-pot conversion into chemicals, fuels and materials. However, in order to develop new catalytic processes for the selective production of desired products, a complete understanding of the molecular aspects of the basic chemistry and reactivity of biomass derived molecules is still crucial. This Special Issue reports on recent progress and advances in the catalytic valorization of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin model molecules promoted by novel heterogeneous systems for the production of energy, fuels and chemicals.
