Download or read book American and European Values written by John Lachs and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American and European Values: Contemporary Philosophical Perspectives is a collection of essays by contemporary scholars considering key aspects of intersection and encounter between American and European values in the contemporary world. The truly international makeup of twenty-one contributors enlivens the book's theme in surprising, and frequently edifying ways. The authors consider, in places with revealing frankness, the cultural sensibilities unique to America and Europe, key historical philosophic figures, from John Dewey, Josiah Royce, and William James to Jean-Paul Sartre, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Mikhail Bakhtin. They also take up various philosophic trends and movements unique to the American and European traditions, including pragmatism, existentialism, phenomenology, and logical-linguistic analysis. Readers interested in deepening their understanding of the increasingly vital philosophical problems that continue to emerge with growing trends of globalization are invited into this rich conversation.
Book Synopsis Vladimir Solov'ëv by : William Peter van den Bercken
Download or read book Vladimir Solov'ëv written by William Peter van den Bercken and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Solov'ev (1853-1900- is regarded as the most original and systematic of the Russian philosophers in the 19th century. He has once again become the subject of international scholarly attention both in Slavic countries and the West. This volume contains selected papers presented at the international conference on Vladimir Solov'ev held at Nijmegen University, the Netherlands, in September 1998. The scope of this conference was wide-ranging, dealing with theological, metaphysical, philosophical and historical themes. Though Solov'ev's broad intellectual activity defies any strict attempt at categorisation, the editors have classified its major themes under the dual characteristic of reconciliation and polemics. Solov'ev was passionately committed to the reconciliation of all beings under the idea of all-unity, which he attemted to achieve by engaging in uncompromising polemics with his contemporaries, The thirty contributors to this volume are specialists from Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Western Europe and the United States. The volume makes a significant contribution to the intellectual reassesment of Vladimir Solov'ev since the rediscovery of his philosophical heritage in his own homeland in the 1980s.

Book excerpt: This book offers original research by leading scholars from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Russia, which covers the central areas of Shpet's work on phenomenology, philosophy of language, cultural theory, and aesthetics and takes forward the current state of knowledge and debates on his contribution to these fields of enquiry. The book also contains, for the first time in English translation, the most seminal portions of Shpet's book-length study of hermeneutics, which is his most significant work for contemporary students of cultural theory. The first part of the book maps out Shpet's legacy in the main areas of his multi-faceted work; the second part examines in closer detail particular aspects of Shpet's philosophical affiliations and contributions in the framework of cultural theory, phenomenology, hermeneutics, and in the field of Russian intellectual history; the final part features the publication of extracts from Shpet's 1918 book on hermeneutics.

Download or read book Civil Society, Religion, and the Nation written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan, Russia, and Turkey are major examples of countries with different ethnic, religious, and cultural background that embarked on the path of modernization without having been colonized by a Western country. In all three cases, national consciousness has played a significant role in this context. The project of Modernity is obviously of European origin, but is it essentially European? Does modernization imply loss of a country’s cultural or national identity? If so, what is the “fate” of the modernization process in these cases? The presence of the idea and reality of civil society can be considered a real marker of Modernity in this respect, because it presupposes the development of liberalism, individualism and human rights. But are these compatible with nationalism and with the idea of a national religion? These questions are the more pressing, as Japan is considered part of the Western world in many respects, and Russia and Turkey are defining their relation to the European Union in different ways. An investigation of these three countries, set off against more general reflections, sheds light on the possibilities or limitations of modernization n a non-European context.
