Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the interrelations of the prominent Estonian writer Jaan Kross (1920-2007) with Russian literature and culture. It includes contributions on the poetics of some of Kross' works (The Czar's Madman, Professor Martens' Departure, Michelson's Matriculation, The Third Range of Hills, A Hard Night for Dr. Karell) and his translations from Russian (e.g. D. Samoilov's poetry and A. Griboedov's The Misfortune of Being Clever). Contributors include Lea Pild, Ljubov Kisseljova, Timur Guzairov, Tatiana Stepanischeva, Dmitry Ivanov, and Maria Tamm. An appendix includes the original Russian text of the autobiography of Johann Koler, the patriarch of Estonian national art and protagonist of one of Kross' novels. So far, this text has appeared only in fragments; the full version was found in the Archive of the Institute of Russian literature in St. Petersburg and is here published, with an extensive commentary, for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its innovative format, Debating New Approaches to History addresses issues currently at the top of the discipline's theoretical and methodological agenda. In its chapters, leading historians of both older and younger generations from across the Western world and beyond discuss and debate the main problems and challenges that historians are facing today. Each chapter is followed by a critical commentary from another key scholar in the field and the author's response. The volume looks at topics such as the importance and consequences of the 'digital turn' in history (what will history writing be like in a digital age?), the challenge of posthumanist theory for history writing (how do we write the history of non-humans?) and the possibilities of moving beyond traditional sources in history and establishing a dialogue with genetics and neurosciences (what are the perspectives and limits of the so-called 'neurohistory'?). It also revisits older debates in history which remain crucial, such as what the gender approach can offer to historical research or how to write history on a global scale. Debating New Approaches to History does not just provide a useful overview of the new approaches to history it covers, but also offers insights into current historical debates and the process of historical method in the making. It demonstrates how the discipline of history has responded to challenges in society – such as digitalization, globalization and environmental concerns – as well as in humanities and social sciences, such as the 'material turn', 'visual turn' or 'affective turn'. This is a key volume for all students of historiography wanting to keep their finger on the pulse of contemporary thinking in historical research.

Book excerpt: Timo von Bock's release by the Czar from nine years' incarceration does not spell the end of the Baron's troubles: he is confined to his Livonian estate to live under the constant eye of police informers planted among his own household, and is subjected to endless humiliations. It is claimed that he is a madman and in need of "protection:" a man would need to be insane, after all, to have taken a Czar at his word when asked for a candid appraisal of the state's infirmities. From the year of his release from prison and return to his wife Eeva, a woman of peasant stock to whom, with her brother Jakob, he has given a solid education, the Baron's life is recorded in a secret journal by this same Jakob, a shrewd and observant house-guest. Reconstructing the events leading up to the Baron's incarceration in 1818 and subsequent to his release in 1827, Jakob little by little brings to light mysteries surrounding the "Czar's madman." Was his madness genuine? What was the secret understanding between him and his boon companion Czar Alexander I, who committed him to prison? In The Czar's Madman, Jaan Kross weaves together the elements of intrigue surrounding those historical characters who survived in post-Napoleonic Russia, and by a skillful shifting of chronology and viewpoints, creates a superbly rich and moving narrative.

Book excerpt: This remarkable history tells the story of the independent city-republic of Basel in the nineteenth century, and of four major thinkers who shaped its intellectual history: the historian Jacob Burckhardt, the philologist and anthropologist Johann Jacob Bachofen, the theologian Franz Overbeck, and the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. "Remarkable and exceptionally readable . . . There is wit, wisdom and an immense erudition on every page."—Jonathan Steinberg, Times Literary Supplement "Gossman's book, a product of many years of active contemplation, is a tour de force. It is at once an intellectual history, a cultural history of Basel and Europe, and an important contribution to the study of nineteenth-century historiography. Written with a grace and elegance that many aspire to, few seldom achieve, this is model scholarship."—John R. Hinde, American Historical Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics: intellectual endeavor, production factor, key technology, key to key technologies? Mathematics is all of these; the last three of its facets are not well known, though. They have been the focus of the research and development in the Berlin-based DFG Research Center MATHEON in the last twelve years. Through these activities, MATHEON has become an international trademark. Its mission and its strategies for carrying out creative, application-driven research in mathematics and cooperating in the solution of complex problems in key technologies are by now a role model for the development of many other centers. Modern key technologies have become highly sophisticated, integrating aspects of engineering, computer, business and other sciences. At the same time, the innovation cycles get shorter and shorter. These simultaneous challenges can be mastered only by qualitatively and quantitatively rigorous methods. And that is where mathematics is indispensable. Flexible mathematical models, as well as fast and accurate methods for numerical simulation and optimization, open new possibilities to handle the indicated complexities, to react quickly, and to explore new options. Researchers in mathematical fields such as optimization, discrete mathematics, numerical analysis, scientific computing, applied analysis and stochastic analysis have to work hand in hand with scientists and engineers to fully exploit this potential and to strengthen the transversal role of mathematics in solving the challenging problems in key technologies. This book presents in seven chapters the research highlights of the research work carried out in the MATHEON application areas: Life Sciences, Networks, Production, Electronic and Photonic Devices, Finance, Visualization, and Education. The chapters summarize many of the contributions, put them in the context of current mathematical research activities, and outline their impact in various key technologies. To make some of the results more easily accessible to the general public, a large number of ``showcases'' are presented that illustrate a few success stories.
