Book excerpt: Written in 1918, this volume attempts to give an un-biased account of the Russian Revolution and what it stood for, by asking to what extent the Revolution was the result of the War and how far the struggle for peace which followed the Revolution was inherent in it. It discusses whether or not the peace policy of the revolutionary democracy expressed the true purpose of Russia at the time or were the soviets really alien to the people and to the Revolution. It also questions whether the disintegration of Russia and the dissolution of the Russian Army inevitable.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Revolution in Russia, 1914-1917 IN the midst of profound peace, in the active work of economical and social reform, Russia, as by thunderbolt, was struck by the news of approaching mobilisation, and by the urgent necessity of having recourse to the sword to protect her interests and those of the other Slav nations. To define exactly the position in which the beginning of the war found Russia, it is necessary briefly to survey her political condition at the moment. The country was still feeling the disturbing effects of the Revolution of 1905 - 6. The intellectual classes which had now received access to and obtained a share in political life and legislation, were engrossed by the struggle with the Government. This tur moil centred specially in the Imperial Duma. With the opening of military action this internal strife of the parties, as in other European countries, and the striving for suprem acy between the Imperial Duma and the Government, died down at first, but later became gradually acute again. This, we observe, was the case with all our Allies and in a certain degree with our enemies. After three years of war, this struggle, becoming still more acute, brought about a crisis which ended in the Revolution of March 1917. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace Problems Russia's Economics The task is difficult, and can but prove long; for not only towns and villages have been destroyed, but institutions which were the very foundations of states, and the social, and economic relations Of nations. All this has to be created anew. How Shall it be done? The future welfare of the world hangs on the solution Of this problem. Are the nations ready for this great recreative work? Are the statesmen, the national leaders, and international public Opinion ready? Lofty watchwords have been proclaimed: The League of Nations - based on Justice and Law, instead Of The Balance of Power in Europe - based on armed force. Brotherhood and peaceful collaboration Of nations in the field Of culture, instead of rivalry, malice and mutual distrust. Freedom and full rights for small nations, instead of oppression and absorption Of the weak by the strong, Collaboration, and the subordination of the interests of separate classes to those of the whole nation, instead of the struggle for power between the classes. When, and by whom was the last watchword pro claimed, the reader may ask, the watchword of the solidarity of the various classes? IS that (if any importance? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Guilt and Peace Crime, of the Entente Allies I have held the belief from the beginning of the struggle that Russia, Great Britain and France were essentially as guilty of bringing on the World War as Germany. Even if this guilt had been very generally recognized, a book such as this might have been deemed neither wise nor expedient, provided the victors had atoned for their share in the guilt by acting with some degree of moderation when the time for settlement had arrived. But when the terrible nature of the Peace settlement is contemplated, one would be untrue to his own conscience as well as lacking in duty to humanity if no attempt were made to reopen this whole question, now that free speech and a free press are again in our possession. The purpose of this book is to show the guilt of the Entente Allies, America's unwise participation in the struggle, the evil nature of the Peace settlement, and most important of all - the structural changes which will be necessary in the governments of such countries as Great Britain, France, Germany and America, to the end that the people will become the real masters of their own destiny, so that a repetition of such a world calamity may not again occur. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace, one of the world’s greatest film epics, originated as a consequence of the Cold War. Conceived as a response to King Vidor’s War and Peace, Bondarchuk’s surpassed that film in every way, giving the USSR one small victory in the cultural Cold War for hearts and minds. This book, taking up Bondarchuk’s masterpiece as a Cold War film, an epic, a literary adaptation, a historical drama, and a rival to Vidor’s Hollywood version, recovers—and expands—a lost chapter in the cultural and political history of the twentieth century. Like many great works of literature, Tolstoy’s epic tale proved a major challenge to filmmakers. After several early efforts to capture the story’s grandeur, it was not until 1956 that King Vidor dared to bring War and Peace to the big screen. American critics were lukewarm about the film, but it was shown in the Soviet Union to popular acclaim. This book tells the story of how the Soviet government, military, and culture ministry—all eager to reclaim this Russian masterpiece from their Cold War enemies—pulled together to make Bondarchuk’s War and Peace possible. Bondarchuk, an actor who had directed only one film, was an unlikely choice for director, and yet he produced one of the great works of Soviet cinema, a worthy homage to Tolstoy’s masterpiece—an achievement only sweetened when Russia’s Cold War adversary recognized it with the Academy Award’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of 1968. Denise Youngblood examines the film as an epic (and at seven hours long, released in four parts, at a cost of nearly $700,000,000 in today’s dollars, it was certainly that), a literary adaptation, a complex reflection on history, and a significant artifact of the cultural Cold War between the US and the USSR. From its various angles, the book shows us Bondarchuk’s extraordinary film in its many dimensions—aesthetic, political, and historical—even as it reveals what the film tells us about how Soviet patriotism and historical memory were constructed during the Cold War.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Realities: Being Impressions Gathered During Some Recent Journeys in Russia Sixty years ago there lived in one of the southern counties a lady well qualified by precedence and acres to take the lead in the country-side. To her came one day the Admiral's daughter, keen on doing something for the comfort of our soldiers then beginning a winter in the Crimea. Now the great lady was a cautious person, and she gave it as her opinion that to provide for the Queen's soldiers by private efforts might be derogatory to Her Majesty, and perhaps not a proper thing to do. Within a very few weeks Queen Victoria herself was organising work societies to alleviate the hard ships at the front, and the great lady was in a state of desperation because she had missed an opportunity of fame as the patroness of the first branch of the Queen's Soldiers' Relief Society, as I think it was called.
