Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Empire of to-Day and Yesterday, 1913: The Country and Its Peoples, Together With a Brief Review of Its History, Past and Present, and a Survey of Its Social, Political and Economic Conditions It has been the aim of the author to trace the growth of Russia, and show how Moscow, one of the smallest of the principalities, or appanages of mediaeval times, gradually became dominant and extended its sovereignty over the whole of what is now the Russian Empire; to show how the Muscovites, once the least important of the Slav tribes, acquired ascendancy and overcame all rivals, including their far more powerful Slavonic neigh bour, Poland. It is a startling story, full of surprises and dramatic incidents, the like of which can be scarcely duplicated in the history of any other nation of'europe. With the exception of a study of Russian history, the author had read very little descriptive of Russia before his own travels throughout the Empire. He wished to form his own opinions at first hand, rather than visit the country with impressions previously formed. The read ing of a book descriptive of a country by a vigorous writer is sure to leave permanent impressions, which will colour the reader's opinion, and the better the book is written the stronger will be such effect. Since returning from his travels, however, which included a visit to every important section in European Russia, and some unusual opportunities for investigation, the author has read prac tically every book of consequence that has appeared in English upon that Empire. It would be impossible to give credit to every writer whose work has proved helpful in the preparation of this volume, but a list of those books will be found in the Bibliography in the Appendix. Many writers have given us travel sketches which have been the result of casual observation and a superficial study of the country, and these works will either be found extremely laudatory or else filled with aberrant criticism. They are either intense admirers or inconsiderate detractors of Russia and things Russian. It has been the aim of the author in the ensuing pages to give the Russian due credit for his good qualities, and at the same time not to Spare comment where criticism is due. Nothing has been ih cluded for the purpose of sensationalism; nor, on the other hand, has anything been omitted for fear it might offend Russian sensibilities. Book excerpt: The contributions gathered in this fascinating collection, in which scholars from a diverse range of disciplines share their perspectives on Russian covert activities known as Russian active measures, help readers observe the profound influence of Russian covert action on foreign states’ policies, cultures, people’s mentality, and social institutions, past and present. Disinformation, forgeries, major show trials, cooptation of Western academia, memory, and cyber wars, and changes in national and regional security doctrines of states targeted by Russia constitute an incomplete list of topics discussed in this volume. Most importantly, through a nexus of perspectives and through the prism of new documents discovered in the former KGB archives, the texts highlight the enormous scale and the legacies of Soviet/Russian covert action. Because of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its on-going war in Ukraine’s Donbas, Ukraine lately gained international recognition as the epicenter of Russian disinformation campaigns, invigorating popular and scholarly interest in conventional and non-conventional warfare. The studies included in this collection illuminate the objectives and implications of Russia’s attempts to ideologically subvert Ukraine as well as other nations. Examining them through historical lenses reveals a cultural clash between Russia and the West in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Empire of to-Day and Yesterday, 1913: The Country and Its Peoples, Together With a Brief Review of Its History, Past and Present, and a Survey of Its Social, Political and Economic Conditions The Russian Empire has long occupied a prominent place among the great countries of the world, but, although one of the most interesting of foreign lands, it has been but little visited by the great army of American tourists and travellers who annually cross the Atlantic. For that reason it is the least known of all the countries of Europe, although occupying an area nearly twice as large as all the other European nations together. Because of this general ignorance Russia has been a most fertile field for a host of sensational writers, who have disseminated much false and absurd information about both country and people. It is a country in which the less scrupulous of journalists are peculiarly at home. A German writer has characterized Russia as "The Land of Riddles." The country of the Czar is also frequently spoken of as the Sphinx, when reference is made to her diplomacy. It is indeed a difficult country to understand, because of the numerous diverse elements which enter into her political composition, and the diplomacy of Russia has caused many a nightmare for the statesmen of the rest of Europe. There is now, and has always been, a strong opposition on the part of the government to all publicity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia of to-Day Petrograd is the head of Russia, and Moscow is the heart of it. But the soul of Russia spreadeth throughout the land and is not to be measured. Russia is Russia. That is not a cheap truism. It is one of those big facts that the foreigner does not often remember. For he goes to the country soaked with his British and other prejudices, stuffed with conceit that he and his race own the ark of righteousness and, when he finds other people doing things in a way different from his own, he concludes the other people must be wrong. Nations have characteristics like individuals. A black-haired Englishman does not exclaim what a fool the other fellow is to have fair hair; he accepts there must be fair hair. And as the Russian mind is not at all like the British mind, as the people are of different race and as different passions consume them, though we cannot help judging Russia from a British standpoint, it is rather like criticising a cow for not being a horse.
