Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia From Within These pages will come as a shock to some very sincere friends of Russia. Those who confound the Russian Nation with the Bureaucratic System by which she is governed, will be inclined to dispute a number of apparently improbable facts which I have cited in order to bring out the character of Contemporary Tsardom. It is my duty to put them on their guard against such generous impulses. This book is not a pamphlet, but an account of the general conditions prevailing at the out break of the Russian Revolution. In these, the personal action of the Executive - Tsar, Princes, Ministers, and Generals - is the capital factor. Analysis of this Execu tive was, therefore, incumbent on me, by juxtaposition of the most typical facts relating to its action. The facts do not make pretty reading. But they are authentic, historical, exact. And it is facts alone that are of importance. The personages themselves are uninterest ing, and I regard them merely as the casual actors of a historic part. From this standpoint, therefore, I discuss them freely, solely in view of the accuracy of the picture I have drawn of contemporary Russian politics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. This little work does not profess to be of a technical nature, but is simply an account of the Russian commanders and soldiers and the impression they made upon me during the twenty-seven years I resided in various parts of the Empire, more especially in Cronstadt, Finland, Petrograd, Krasno Selo, Little Russia and the Caucasus. It lays no claim to be either exhaustive or even of any practical use to the serious student of the Russian Evolution. It is written for the ignorant, and with the object of helping them to decide whether they wish to take an interest in what is now happening in Russia, or not. I cannot take them into the house and show them all over it from floor to ceiling with the knowledge and authority of a master-builder all I can do is to open a small window and ask them to look through it and observe certain things, pointing out how far these things are typical of the whole and my hope is that the glimpses I have given them will enable them to decide whether they wish to go and knock at the front door and investigate for themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia, Poland and the Ukraine As it is being asserted in E n g l i s h circles, that Rus sia is not so black as she is painted, and that Russia is going to turn a new leaf, and as Russian Liberals and even a large number of Russian revolutionists are joining loudly in this chorus of praises of the Russian conver sion, it is the duty of such Europeans as wish, in this question, to form their judgment in accordance with the state of things, not of to examine with the utmost caution what has been the attitude of the Russian Liberals, and of the other coming men in Russia, with regard to this Ukrainian question, and how the latter has been progressing. May we expect democracy and freedom for the Ukra ine At the present moment this question is a far more important one to put to the conscience of the con verted Russian nation than that of the democracy and freedom of Poland and Finland, however important these questions may also be. for it is going to cost a great deal more of moral conviction on the part of the Great Russians to do justice to the Ukraine, than to do justice to Poland and Finland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Life: In Town and Country Russian life, the only phase of the national existence that the ordinary visitor ever sees, whether on business or pleasure bent, is the outgrt of the reforms instituted by Peter the Great, and copied from much that we are familiar with in Western Europe. The modern development of Russia has, it is true, grown with wonderful rapidity of late years, but it is almost entirely confined to the towns and the regions easily accessible by the railway. New railways are constantly being laid down, but Russia covers so vast an area that a glance at the map will sufi'ice to show how large a pro portion of the country must remain for many years outside their influence. Less than twelve per cent. Of the nation reside in towns, not eight per cent. Near enough to urban centres to be influenced by town life, while the remaining eighty per cent., people of every rank of life from nobles to peasants, dwell in regions that modern life and thought have as yet hardly touched to any appreciable extent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia in Europe and Asia The great deal that is not included in the chapters may be supplied by making use of the bibliography given at the end of this volume. It will be found that, after all, so far as the Russian people are concerned, and as the interesting customs of the land appeal to us, we cannot do much better than to depend upon the narratives and descriptions of the old authorities, Clarke, Haxthausen, Wallace, and several others. There is so much that is still refreshing and illuminating in their books, that, for the topics they discuss, we cannot do better than turn to them. To condense into one little volume the size of this, some thing even approximating to an account of the great Russian Empire, or Siberia alone, is a very audacious thing to attempt, and I trust the many imperfections may be considered chari tably. One great difficulty that has constantly faced me is the instability of conditions in those parts of Asia wherein Russia is an important factor. Even while writing, the changes which are taking place, and others that must be considered more than mere possibilities, present a difficulty that is discouraging to an author. The thousand odd years of Russian history Show how a people living on the south-west corner of the plain learned the plain's secret, discovered its rhythm, its steady alternation between relaxation and effort, between movement and repose, gradually secured possession of the overland trade - routes and, step by step, transforming commercial advantage into political power, finally subdued all its rivals and created an Empire whose limits are nearly everywhere coterminous with those of the plain, while in the Caucasus and Siberia they overpass them.
