Stories of happiness and hard work. Stories of hardship and joy. As rural people tell their stories, remember them, for in these stories are the values and beliefs that have been passed on from generation to generation, and make the upper Midwest what it is today. Noted author Jerry Apps collected these oft spoken phrases, observations, comments and conundrums. Together with striking photographs by his son, Steve Apps, staff photographer for the Wisconsin State Journal, the statements lend humorous. touching, unique glimpses into rural life in the upper Midwest. Book excerpt: In this delightful memoir of short stories and essays, the author uses the rural wisdom he gained in his youth to explain time, forgiveness, and the crush of change; and applies it the challenge of life in the big city. Here, there is history on a clothesline, wisdom in a thunderstorm, and appreciation in a car ride. His humor includes a wild turkey that lived in a doghouse with an old German Shepherd, escaped wild pigs, and the etiquette of trapping city mice. Follow the author as he explores the reverence of the beekeeper, the absolute quiet of the farm between dark and dawn, and compares today’s body-piercings to the nose jewelry used on the farm. The theme of the book reveals that each one of us wants to be loved, appreciated, and to contribute to life. But along the way we ignore our opportunities, and yet, life continually gives us second chances despite our inattentiveness. Read and enjoy the author’s appreciation of the richness of ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indifference has not always characterized American attitudes toward rural children, nor has neglect always been the cornerstone of state and federal policy toward rural education. Indeed, for nearly a century there was an avid and influential—though ultimately ineffective—rural school reform movement in the United States. But in recent years, rural education has become a "skeleton in the closet" of the education profession. More than 14 million children attend rural schools that receive only minuscule amounts of the nation s financial resources and professional attention. The authors of this book carefully analyze the beliefs, assumptions, policies, and practices that have shaped and continue to shape education in rural America, concluding that conventional wisdom in rural education has proved to be considerably more conventional than wise. They offer pragmatic suggestions for changes in rural schools, in educational policy, and in programs designed for rural communities. As Robert Coles tells us in his Foreword to the book, they "give us clear, strong, uncluttered prose—a good sign that they are able to offer sensible, honest, unpretentious suggestions and useful ideas. They give us. . .a social history that enables perspective . . . and [they give us] practical, well-argued suggestions for a public policy both humane and capable of realization for our rural areas."

Ma Rhea explores the ways in which the Thai university system attempts to balance old knowledge traditions, Buddhist and rural, with new Thai and imported knowledge. It traces the development of Thai university partnerships with outsiders, focusing on the seventy year relationship between Thailand and Australia. In comparison, it analyses the old Thai Buddhist wisdom tradition and in the final chapters proposes its worthiness as a pedagogical pathway for universities globally.

The first blessing was godly parents who daily instilled in him biblical and moral values by both word and example. The second blessing was being raised on a farm where he was taught informed by God's marvelous creation.Travel with Jim Geyer to a time when a man's word was his bond, when a handshake was all that was needed to consummate an agreement, a time when doors were seldom locked and windows were often open to catch the warm evening summer breeze. A time when growing up was a fun, carefree time.Consider today's culture and you immediately see a marked decline in the strength of families who each evening gather around the supper table. There is an observable decrease in honesty, integrity and accountability. Dad & Mom's Country Wisdom offers pleasant memories of your parents' childhood. This book will bless you with many Scriptures that have and still do relate to our daily experiences and challenges you in your personal, family and business life.

Book excerpt: Jerry App’s farm stories open the barn door to understanding life in the country. “Even with the all the hard work, we had more time (perhaps we took more time) to enjoy what was all around us: nights filled with starlight, days with clear blue skies and puffy clouds. Wonderful smells everywhere—fresh mown hay, wildflowers, and apple blossoms. Interesting sounds—the rumble of distant thunder, an owl calling in the woods, a flock of Canada geese winging over in the fall.” In this paperback edition of a beloved Jerry Apps classic, the rural historian tells stories from his childhood days on a small central Wisconsin dairy farm in the 1930s and 1950s. From a January morning memory of pancakes piled high after chores, to a June day spent learning to ride a pony named Ginger, Jerry moves through the turn of the seasons and teaches gentle lessons about life on the farm. With recipes associated with each month and a new introduction exclusive to this 2nd edition, Living a Country Year celebrates the rhythms of rural life with warmth and humor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journal for Star Wisdom 2016 includes articles of interest concerning star wisdom (Astrosophy), as well as a guide to the correspondences between stellar configurations during the life of Christ and those of today. This guide comprises a complete sidereal ephemeris and aspectarian, geocentric and heliocentric, for each day throughout the year. Published yearly, new editions are available beginning in October or November for the coming new year. According to Rudolf Steiner, every step taken by Christ during his ministry between the baptism in the Jordan and the resurrection was in harmony with—and an expression of—the cosmos. Journal for Star Wisdom is concerned with these heavenly correspondences during the life of Christ. It is intended to help provide a foundation for cosmic Christianity, the cosmic dimension of Christianity. It is this dimension that has been missing from Christianity in its two-thousand-year history. Readers can begin on this path by contemplating the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets against the background of the zodiacal constellations (sidereal signs) today in relation to corresponding stellar events during the life of Christ. In this way, the possibility is opened for attuning, in a living way, to the life of Christ in the etheric cosmos. This year's journal begins with an article by Robert Powell on the relationship between the galactic center and Christ’s miracle of the healing of the man born blind, followed by an article by Estelle Isaacson about the life of the man born blind, whose name was Celidonius. She has also written on the “star of Lazarus and reading the starry script.” Claudia McLaren Lainson’s article “The Towers We Build” relates to the planet Uranus and events of our time against the background of the position of Uranus—in 2016, the same as shortly after Christ’s Ascension. She also honors psychologist and astrosopher William Bento, who died on June 5, 2015, with her “In Memoriam.” David Tresemer’s article, written with Robert Schiappacasse, expands on a short contribution from William Bento. Brian Gray’s article focuses upon the birth of Jesus—in terms of a stellar imagination—in relation to the three kings on the one hand and the shepherds on the other. Nicholas Kollerstrom contributed “Position of the Ancient Star Zodiac,” presenting his research into the original scientific definition of the zodiac. The article “Specters” by Kevin Dann takes a unique approach to “The Fall of the Spirits of Darkness,” the subject of David Tresemer’s article. The monthly commentaries for 2016 by Claudia McLaren Lainson are supported by monthly astronomical previews by Sally Nurney, offering opportunities to observe and experience physically the stellar configurations during 2016. This direct interaction between the human being on Earth and the heavenly beings of the stars develops the capacity to receive their wisdom-filled teachings.
