There is a new wealth of impulse and inspiration for the dweller in the open country. Most of it is equally applicable to the little town. But the author does not feel that, in its present form, it would greatly encourage him if he were still living in such a town. This book attempts to suggest in what infinite variety the gospel of rural progress applies to the little town. These wars were at stated periods, but fighting with the Indians was going on all the while. We fought with the Indians; but there were also Indians who fought for us. These were found especially among the Algonquins and their allies. Tarhe or Crane, who served with General Harrison, had much to do with the defeat of Proctor on the Thames. He was the foe of Tecumseh, the Shawnee. He was against the Americans at Fallen Timbers in 1794, but later came to know that the Indian's welfare had better be trusted to the American people than to any other. Another chief of commanding character was Leather Lips. He was devoted to the cause of his tribe, but when the time for conflict came, prudence tempered his policy and he was successful in staying open hostility; but his wide influence made him the object of jealousy, and by-and-by of intrigue. He was hated by Roundhead and the Wyandottes on the Detroit River, and was in the end slain on the Scioto near Columbus, where a granite monument has been erected to his memory. Earlier in American history there was Cornstalk, who took the side of the Colonists at Point Pleasant in West Virginia. He was terrible in battle, and had a genius for strategy. One of these, mentioned by Schoolcraft, cut down in 1837, had 335 cortical layers, This carries the period back as far as 1502, or some years prior to the discovery of this country by the French. How long these labors were abandoned before this tree commenced its growth may not be susceptible of proof. Early French explorers do not appear to have been interested in the question, and it does not seem to me necessary to go further back than the three centuries during which that tree ourished, for a period quite long enough to have crumbled into indistinguishable dust every trace of wooden dwellings and implements, as well as of the bodies of their fabricators, if the latter received only simple earth burial.
