Book Synopsis Lawyers and the Rule of Law by : Andrew Boon
Download or read book Lawyers and the Rule of Law written by Andrew Boon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines lawyers' contributions to creating and maintaining the rule of law, one of the pillars of a liberal democracy. It moves from the European Enlightenment to the modern day, exploring the role of judges, government lawyers, and private practitioners in creating, defining, and being defined by, the demands of modern society. The book is divided into 4 parts representing the big themes. The first part considers lawyers' contribution to the growth of constitutionalism, the second, the formulation of roles and identities, and the third the formation of values. The fourth part focuses on the challenges faced by lawyers and the rule of law in the past 50 years, the neoliberal period, and how they challenge both conceptions of lawyers and the rule of law. Each part is illustrated by defining events, from the execution of Charles I, through the Nuremberg Trials, to the insurrection by supporters of Donald Trump in January 2021. Although the focus is on England and Wales, parallel developments in other jurisdictions, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA, are considered. This allows analysis of lawyers' historical and contemporary engagement with the rule of law in jurisdictional systems based on the Common Law. Each chapter is thematic, but the passage through the book is broadly chronological.

Book Synopsis The New Lawyer, Second Edition by : Julie Macfarlane
Download or read book The New Lawyer, Second Edition written by Julie Macfarlane and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Lawyer analyzes the profound impact changes in client needs and demands are having on how law is practised. Most legal clients are unwilling or unable to pay for protracted litigation and count on their lawyers to pursue just and expedient resolution. These clients are transforming the role of lawyers, the nature of client service, and the principles of legal practice. In this fully revised edition of the now classic text, Julie Macfarlane outlines how lawyers can meet new expectations by committing to lawyer-client collaboration, conflict resolution advocacy, and revised financial structures so that the legal profession can remain relevant in this rapidly changing environment.
Book Synopsis Money Laundering in Canada by : Margaret E. Beare
Download or read book Money Laundering in Canada written by Margaret E. Beare and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This new work by Margaret E. Beare and Stephen Schneider brings empirical evidence to the study of money laundering in Canada. The authors challenge the dominant, seemingly common-sense notion, fuelled by political posturing and policing rhetoric, that taking the profits away from criminals (proceeds of crime enforcement) is a rational and effective tactic. Using extensive research involving records gathered from police, financial institutions, and legal sources, the authors paint a picture of a dubiousenforcement strategy beset by conflicting interests and agendas, an overly ambitious set of expectations, and reliance on an ambiguous body of evidence as to the strategy's overall merits."--BOOK JACKET.
